Silent Hill 2 - PS2 vs XBOX

You can certainly see the difference in those videos, though it doesn't seem quite as pronounced there as when you actually are playing it. Good work, mask.

I'm curious about the color issue now, though. The XBOX version looks a tad brighter in those videos, but there isn't a huge difference. Yet, in person, it's very different (no matter the TV). Hmm...

How did you capture each of the videos?

PS2 -> Original Sony Video Signal Divider -> Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB 2
X-BOX -> Original Advaance AV Pack -> Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB 2

S-Video cable being StraightWire Silver Dual Coax.

Same MPEG-2 12Mbps video capture settings/adjustments on the WinTV.

If PS2 feeds directly with the original S-Video cable, it will be a little bit brighter.

PC from fraps and scaled a little bit to look closer to the console versions.

Nice captures.

I had been considering picking up the PC version secondarily for cheap (coincidentally, I was looking at doing this just last night...heh), since, as reminded in a post earlier, it would be nice to see those character models in high res.

Does the PC version retain the red save-point locations for those who want to stick to the original saving patterns, or does it toss those because of the anytime save?

Yes, the save anywhere is an addition. Nothing was taken away.

Luckily, it does not toss the original save system.

Feed to encoder directly with the original PS2 S-Video cable (you can see that the white level is a little bit higher, i.e. higher contrast, than the one from splitter)

PS2 (SH2RD JPN)
http://z-o-g.org/video/misc/sh2-fog-ps2-d.wmv (9.67 MBytes)

The splitter was used because I usually record while playing with DScaler, the stream playback from the encoder will cause a few seconds delay.

I don't know where the idea that the Xbox has more vivid color is coming from. At any time when I tested an app on both or more platforms, the PS2 always came away with the most vivid color and the Xbox with the dullest.

I saw this with SH2, Soul Calibur 2, and multiple DVD series (Vol1 in PS2, Vol2 in Xbox)
I've seen this on two of my TV's and Dark's, as well as my hardware and Dark's.

He's seen it too. Our theory, for a while, was that the Xbox s-video output just sucked. This is because the Xbox Soul Calibur hooked up to his TV on s-video looked very different from when displayed on another HD set in 480. In 480p Taki's red bodysuit was shockingly red, as oppossed to it looking more faded in s-vid. Both tvs were Toshibas by the way; however I was not able to see these examples side by side. Methinks I will soon.

Still supporting this theory, I actually expected different results when I booted both SH2 versions up today, side by side, both in component. Xbox was straight brighter, resulting in a look that was washed out in comparison.

Well, our interest is piqued. Guessing that we'll spend a chunk of this Saturday going over the versions and confirming what we already know.

Maskrider: Props to anybody who can turn out examples like that so fast, but those vids did not represent quite what I saw today.

I know there's a lot of dead-horse-beating going on in this thread already, but if you had captured those vids from the initial camera angle upon entering the graveyard instead of repositioning the camera, you would have seen a bigger difference.

I'll sum it up by saying that on the Xbox there was no moving fog on the top of the screen. Fog billowed through the gates behind James, as it does in all versions, but unlike the PS2 version, the air above James was blank gray on the Xbox. No fog up high.

Maybe your captures were a bad examples, maybe my test was a bad example, without looking at every damn foggy area in the game we won't be sure. But my observations today displayed a much larger discrepency than your vids.

Well, we're all in agreement about the fog anyway, so maybe it didn't need to be said.
