Silent Hill 2 reportedly have issues due to the PS5 Pro’s upscaling tech and looks worse

I bitched about this before but to me it looks like Sony abandoned their entire "Housemarque so awesome" moment whwn Returnal didn't sell millions. They ended up adding co-op and never even patched it despite having breaking bugs all over the place. I'm gonna assume Sony dropped Returnal like a hot potato.

I'd be truly shocked if a Pro patch drops.
They gave gave us awesome free DLC and a photo mode. It's a-ok. Game got enough attention from Sony. Time to move on.

Keep Selene fighting in your heart and mind.

Sad how probably correct you are.

He's not blaming Lumen - he's blaming the general trend that a ton of things in the render-pipeline nowadays needs heavy TAA (not reconstruction) to hold together because it's a shimmery mess in individual frames, at any resolution. Lumen is just one of the popular examples - but this is increasingly common everywhere, in most engines. Basically TAA algorithms are doing the heavy lifting for temporally unstable pipelines - with individual frames becoming increasingly lower-fidelity.
As the video mentions, Lumen 'can' be configured to be more temporally stable - at expense of being more laggy - but for a game like SH that's mostly static, especially outdoors in the daytime - that would be a valid trade-off.

Now - the fact that PSSR may not behave as a temporal-stability bandaid is an oversight that someone should have caught - and likely shouldn't be particularly hard to fix - given how it works in analytical temporal accumulators - but yes they shouldn't have been caught by surprise. And if they DID know, they should have insisted games that depend on it continue using other TAA together with PSSR, so neither option is a valid excuse.
However - this should have also been caught before any of these patches went live - noone can say QA somehow 'didn't notice' this - so every single dev carries the responsibility for the state these patches released in as well. It's an incredibly sad state of affairs that game-dev has sunk so low that people would just blindly push 'release' button on visibly subpar updates and be like 'surprise' about it after. I've come to expect that from mobile-apps - but games used to be better than this.
I have blamed the devs for these fuck ups in the star wars thread, the Alan Wake 2 thread and im pretty sure even in this SH2 thread last night. Im not absolving these incompetent buffoons of the blame. Trust me.

I just think Lumen is the future. So is realtime GI. Everyone had to update their reconstruction solutions because we all went through this 4 years ago where RT denoisers werent working with DLSS and FSR. Eventually they were fixed.

Why are there games advertised on PSN that are "enhanced" but aren't?

Hmm, based on page 1 and some other comments, I thought this game was ambiguous (as in already have enhancements built in without advertising) or not enhanced, but it very much as the enhanced tag on the games official product page.

There is an entire tab dedicated to PS5 Pro enhanced games and a bunch there do not have any enhancement patch. Directly on PS5 PS Store.

it's strange but this game is 100% not patched

What are you on about? I'm looking to try games that actually are enhanced and few of those listed in the store don't have a patch. Finished Last of Us and that looked great. FF7 Rebirth looks great too.

Sorry, didn't make that clear. I was implying that the Enhanced Pro tag being shown on games but don't have the patch yet was bait to get you to buy the Pro.

Jedi and SH 2 remake is causing a big backlash. I hope Sony will address this issue as soon as possible, possibly help those developers in the technical side before it gets worse. But overall ps5 pro performed well in other games like for example FF7 Rebirth, Dragons dogma2, Stellar Blade and most 1st party and 2nd party games.

Pretty sure games released after a certain point would already have PSSR potentially without a patch.

Just really need to make sure a game has a high-ish frame rate mode with PSSR off. I really can't stand upscaling artifacts.

When I first launched Starfield on my new laptop it had aggressive DLSS settings enabled and it was sort of hilarious because when you turned on your sensor or whatever it glitched just like it does when you are supposed to be detecting a temple / artifact nearby lol

Nice that an actual developer is confirming ~2 ms of cost for PSSR was communicated officially by Sony perfectly aligning with the leaked dev documentation (altogether with other aspects of the system just as accurate). This pretty much confirms both the 300 TOPs for the custom machine learning hardware and RDNA 3 dual issue compute since those are from the very same paper. Very informative posts all around debunking a lot of intentional misconceptions.

FYI, Digital Foundry also say that SH2's shimmering issues people are seeing *is* the PSSR patch and that some combinations of low resolution and RT effects cause it.

It's pretty much at the start of the video.

they don't know it. I don't believe them
Pretty sure Sony required games released during the run up to the launch to support Pro. They did that for PS4 Pro. It was a several month window.

That's why games without "a patch" are exhibiting clear upscaling issues on Pro.

Need to be less aggressive with the settings.

I have no clue if it's the case for this or not.

But DF also said Baldur's Gate 3 was patched when they showed it, it wasn't.

Larian released the patch a few days later.

It also said Pro enhanced on the Store.

When did DF cover BG3's PS5 Pro mode? I can't recall at the moment.

Also, if the PSN website is listing things incorrectly, that's something even more shittier then. It's selling people on false premises.

Fucking hell, can people stop getting ultra defensive like someone insulted their mother?

I have a Pro, can I not complain about fucked up games that are being advertised as Pro Enhanced? WTF is this "bend-over and fuck me" mentality?

You're blaming the hardware when it's the devs not optimizing the game properly.
Just finished the game on the Pro, had a great time & didn't really notice the shimmering. I'm sure Sony will get this figured out in a timely manner. I mean, the system launched 2 weeks ago. Gonna be pissed though if we're still having these issues in say, March, though.

Who is doing that?

Most people seem to be shitting on it. Lol.

They never even Pro patched it yet. The last patch was over 3 weeks ago and it was to fix the save file bug.

They do need to address this with a proper fix.

Did you play Quality or Performance? Based on the videos I've seen, looks like Performance mode is where it mostly shits the bed with the shimmering.

i think "getting" suggest an ongoing process without an specific time frame. it simply suggested that devs were not "lazy" but they are "getting" lazy over time

Devs are spread too thin on too many platforms. They should focus first on making console versions good then adding features for higher end pc

The only game that needed it and turned out well is Rebirth. Its breaks the lighting in Dragon's Dogma 2. SH2, AW2, and Survivor are an unstable mess. FSR levels of mess.
