DJBrannon - *What's this new Silent Hill about?*

Konami - "Okay get this, you're a normal guy who gets stuck wandering the bloody, rusty static noise filled corridors of.... YOUR APARTMENT! WOO SCARY WOOO RAR!"

DJ - *....you aren't even trying anymore, are you?"

Konami - "A GHOST WILL CHASE YOU UP THE STAIRS AND KILL YOU WITH ITS STATIC SCARES!!!" RAR!!!

DJ - *..........*

Konami - "......."

DJ - *.........*

Konami - "......."

DJ - *.....fuck it's $14.95 brand new, I'll take it!"

***********************

And so begins my descent into another hell in a city with the name of Ashford, which makes me wonder if I'll run into a cross-dressing supervillain this time...

The "scary" part of the game is how Konami is fucking up games with the number "4" in their title...

First, Silent Hill...then Suikoden....

MGS4 is next :O

SH4 is the biggest disappointment Konami have released this gen IMO. SH2 and SH3 are both masterpieces IMO but 4 is just dull. I didn't even finish it.

SH4 may be their biggest disappointment, but it's also the best innovation of the SH series.

The 1st person parts in SH4 are incredible. The atmosphere is perfect and the way the story is told through peepholes, notes, and phone calls is very well done.

But the 3rd person parts (75% of the game) are the weakest in the series.

If Konami wants to do SH5 all in 1st person mode I would cheer them on.

I never played SH1 or SH4, but out of SH2 and SH3 - SH2 was the best.

I quit playing SH3 because it was just so nonsensical and stupid. I got back to the girls apartment and finally gave up. It was pretty boring up until then so I said - fuck it.

SH2 was gripping and the story was cool.

SH3 really doesn't make much sense unless you have a good idea of what went on in SH1. But yes, SH2 is definetly the best in the series.

SH3 is a direct sequel to SH1. If you haven't played the original, then part 3 probably isn't going to make a whole lot of sense.

SH4 killed my faith in the series.

Well the first few hours were good..then came the nauseating backtracking.

Same here. That's where I gave up, when you visit the orphanage again.

And the fact that you couldn't regain your health in the apartment anymore and that damn guy chased you all the time! Haha, it was just too many irritating things with SH4. Those damn ghosts as well.. draining health all the time. Annoying as hell. I wanted to take the game and just throw it out the window. I dunno what the hell Akira was smoking while making this game but the music is still very good.

I like SH4, not necessarily more than the others (and definitely behind 2), but I adapted fine to the new changes. I liked the challenge of keeping Eileen as safe as possible, even though it slows things. I also liked the
loss of auto-healing near the end, which forced one to play smartly. After all, there are more than enough health bottles to be found, especially around the last level.
Same thing with ammo, the tight restraints on ammo capacity make every shot count. And the option of
pinning down a ghost permanently with a sword--negating that ghost's presence in later levels--
was pretty neat.

Played through all 4 endings, with the main complaint being some of the low-effort, embarassing choices for sound effects. Like the now-infamous belch...

So far the game is pretty easy. The ghosts are more annoying than anything, and I haven't run across any Silent Hill-ish puzzles yet. Well except for the orphanage tower, nothing of note has actually appeared yet.

The steel pipe weapon is the only weapon I've used so far; it calls out to me with each bone-crushing swing. More to come.

so did you see the evil hospital? I cant remember when that occurs but holy crap if you havent its worth it just for that section they did some amazing things with the ps2

Killed your faith? Didn't take much...

Regarding the game itself...

The backtracking was one of the elements that bothered me the least, actually. I found that the return to each area was FAR more interesting than when you first show up. The original environment run throughs all felt very clipped and un-interesting. The only area that I REALLY enjoyed was the apartment building, though (not just the first person segments either). The two visits to the apartment complex were very good. The hospital was also fairly enjoyable, though somewhat small.

The main issues I had with the game revolved around the fact that it just wasn't scary. I ENJOY being scared and I really fell into the first three games. However, SH4 never really had any effect on me. The lack of darkness was a HUGE issue...

SH3 is indeed a bit of a slow slog up to that point. But the Apartment is actually the turning point, the story and gameplay both pick up after that. So leaving it after having gotten to that point would be a shame.
