Silksong Players complain about high difficulty, Steam Scores Fall, Easy Mode Mod Gets Popular

On social media sites like X and Reddit, as well as conversations with colleagues at Polygon, it appears that some Silksong players are approaching the game with a tilted head. Few people are saying that Silksong is too hard. It's more that everyone has had to adjust their expectations as to what Silksong was going to be like.

"Taking damage is more punishing, movement is more precise and feels a little clunky until you get the hang of it," one popular Reddit thread reads. "The overall skill curve is much much higher. Love it though."

"bro Silksong is like Endgame Hollow Knight difficulty FROM THE START," a post from a viral thread on X reads.

Even Hollow Knight fans are surprised at how punishing Silksong is

What years of watching 15-second reels did to mfs

Fans of this game just won't STFU don't they? Years crying about the game not coming out now crying about the game being to hard.

LMAO
One would assume fans of the series aren't the ones using the mod. It's the same as Elden Ring's easy mode mods. It's mostly noobs coming in hot and are punished

I'd be interested to know what the QA/testing process for this game was. And I wonder whether they'll do any balancing in a patch.

Aside from the last ultra difficult gauntlet Ive beaten HK without too much trouble including DLC bosses and all ...

So ... is SS that different ? Like ... Nightmare King Grimm??

I think the combat difficulty wouldn't be such a problem if there were respawn points before boss encounters so you didn't have to backtrack so far from the last bench.

The no double damage mod is actually a great idea. They Should add it into the game proper. Nothing feels worse then that happening when an enemy lunges at you and slides right through your needle swipe even if you hit them (non boss characters)

As others have mentioned, most of the negative reviews are from Chinese players complaining about a poor translations.
I'm still early in the game (around 5 hours in) but I haven't found it particularly challenging so far. Maybe it gets frustrating later on, but so far it has a nice level of challenge where you need to pay attention and have some precision, but nothing too punishing.

I played Nine Sols earlier this year and that was significantly harder out of the gate.

I'm the kind of player that would prefer to drop the game and never play it again rather than lower the difficult. Imagine using a mod.

It depends how old you are.

I'm 35 and not as quick and skilled as i was in my 20. Stressful situations are also more difficult than in my 20s.
Time passes, people grow old, there will be an increasing amount of 50/60yo gamers.
Depression also can worsen the difficulty spike as failing over and over can trigger self-image degradation even further, this shit also inhibit brain capabilities.
I know the "git gud lelz" over and over but i suppose very few people that constantly repeat this are 40+yo or have conditions.

Why not let people choose ?

(I dont have this game yet, it's just my pov about difficulty in gaming overall).

I struggle to understand this viewpoint. You'd rather abandon a game, even if you were enjoying it, rather than tweak the difficulty?
Is it a pride thing or some other reason?

It reminds me when PC players use mods to slow down speed of Sekiro in order to make it easier.

Most current gamers no longer have patience for difficult games.

I'm almost 50, my first console was an Intellivision! I've played games for a long time and I've beaten my fair share of legendarily "difficult" games.
The reflexes have definitely gone downhill, but I was still able to get through From's catalog, well except for Sekiro…
I can pull off complete runs in Spelunky 1and 2, but I can't make it through a quarter of Silksong lmao.

It is what it is. Hopefully they tune it or add options. If not, I'll rebuy it when I can mod it on a Steamdeck or equivalent hardware.

The only game in the past 10 years that genuinely pissed me off with it's difficulty, to the point where I thought the developers went too far, was the Brutal and Legendary VR Challenges for FFVII Rebirth. Locking the Platinum Trophy behind a series of 30-60 minute long gauntlets, with tough as nails battles, was some bullshit.

Dear everyone,

Y'all are a buncha weenies.

People need to read more the descriptions and tags on Steam. It says "Difficult" and unless that word changed meaning, it IS a difficult game.

To me I don't mind optional battles to be brutally difficult, to me thats entire point of super bosses.

For me the only difficult boss that truly almost broke me was this….

It's 6 phase boss that you can't make single mistake or you have do it all over again.

Ah, so those Dark Souls 2 comparisons were more accurate than I thought.

With Dark Souls 2 you can at least clear areas for enemies in 12 or so respawns. Fx Iron Keep you can clear all of the annoying knights up to the smelter demon, while also getting some XP. And then have a clear runback to the boss.

After playing for an hour and realizing almost everything in the game does double damage now, I've reconciled with the fact that the game is going to be even harder than the OG Hollow Knight, which my 40 year old ass barely beat.

I wouldn't blame anyone for modding. Have fun.

My patience for "difficult" games is damn near zero in my old age. I banged my face against unnerfed consort radhan for almost 3 weeks. I downed him but felt nothing but relief. At that moment, I swore off difficult games. I just don't have the bandwidth anymore

I might get this now. I felt the first game was way too easy during the first 10 or so hours.
Did you complete it along with all the optional challenge bosses? Because that's who this game is tuned for.

I finally pulled HK out of my backlog in the lead up to this and completed a 100% run but didn't do all the pantheon stuff. The start of Silksong is fine. You're very under powered and slog through just to get a few abilities to let you progress. I didn't care for the hitboxes and how dodge worked in HK, and the double damage in Silksong along with bosses over relying on spawning adds bounced me off the game. This game should have been delayed another six months and actually play tested for balance. The next few months will be fun I wonder who will be the biggest defenders of the year Silksong fans or Switch 2 fans.

I will go as far as my gaming abilities get me and stop. Game is special but as someone more used to 3d space (I could beat most soulslike with enough time and patience), I was never really good at the 2d platforming stuff and can see potential blockers in the horizon.

Must be get harder later. So far I've beaten like 4 or 5 bosses and while challenging, I don't have died more than twice to any of them.

review bombed by chinese

English Very Positive (38,176)
Simplified Chinese Mostly Negative (28,211)
Evidently, the Chinese localization was God awful.

This is really the only "balancing" the game needs as far as I'm concerned. Just add in a Stake of Marika-like respawn point before boss encounters. You can't "rest" there (i.e. save your game) but you'll respawn there when killed by a boss.

No, I quit as soon as it got too hard. The genre does little for me.
Stay away from Silksong then. Hollow Knight and Silksong aren't great examples of Metroidvanias as they throw in too much souls bullshit. And Silksong is closer to the end game difficulty of Hollow Knight. If you dropped Hollow Knight as soon as it go hard, you won't get anywhere before uninstalling in Silksong.
