I got a chance to play Skullgirls while I was at SCR yesterday and it's pretty much The Best Fighting Game, I can't praise this game enough. The best explanation I can give is that the game just feels right - it's the fighting game I never knew I was always looking for, it's Marvel without any bullshit. Not only will I be getting this game day 1, I will be dropping SF4 and MvC3, I like it that much.
I believe TTOB always says that he thinks fighting games should be like jazz,
this is that game, the infinite detection system allows for just that - it will make his grinch heart grow at least two sizes.
After seeing that stream- my opinion on Skullgirls is pretty much confirmed.
Buying, but not for the gameplay. The art is gorgeous, best I've seen in any 2d fighter. Gameplay 1.) seems like Darkstalkers with Marvel assists and Arc characters, it's a combination that can work, but just isn't my style of game. 2.) Maybe it will win me over eventually the way Blazblue did, I'll definitely give it a chance, I'm just expecting to be terrible at it.
1.) This is exactly how Skullgirls feels to me, like Vampire Savior meets Marvel. The comparison to Arc characters is less true for me, but I see where you're coming from (it's probably just that I was never able to get into Blazblue).
2.) That brings me to my next point: SKULLGIRLS WILL WIN YOU OVER.
While it's clear that Skullgirls' art direction inherently lacks the universal appeal of Street Fighter's racist caricatures, the quality of the game will convert any serious fighting game enthusiast if they give it a chance. That's the only real hurdle, overcoming the first impressions of people turned off by the art style. I should know, I was originally dismissive of the game as a cheesecake fan-service project, but after they showed off Peacock I started paying attention to the promotional videos about the actual fighting engine, and playing it at SCR is what made me into the loudmouthed zealot you see before you. If this game isn't a huge success, it will have a very loyal fan-base with a ton of good will for any future Reverge projects.
