Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

The 20th is going to be an expensive day. Skyward Sword Bundle, Super Mario 3D Land (if Best Buy has it in stock, might preorder it and see if I can pick it up on the 20th), and the Skyward Sword Guide if BestBuy has it. Might have to check some stores on the way home. Almost giddy thinking about it. :)

I think my top 3 will be:

1: Skyward Sword
2: Skyrim
3: Dark Souls

2 and 3 might switch around, but I'm a firm believer in no.1.

I expect some incredibly varied lists when the GAF GOTY thread rolls in, just looking at the high scoring games that released this year reminds me just how great this year has been, it's almost maddening.
Even choosing 10 is going to be a challenge!

My GOTY list right now is looking like:

Skyward Sword
Dark Souls
Uncharted 3
Dead Space 2

Was really disappointed with Arkham City and Resistance 3. I liked Portal 2 and while it is technically a better game than its predecessor, I just felt like the first was one of those lightning in a bottle type games. It absolutely warranted a sequel, don't get me wrong, and they did bring plenty of new elements to the mix. It just didn't really "hit" me like the first game did.

I'd be shocked if I don't end up including Skyrim or Assassin's Creed: Revelations... or Mario 3D Land or Mario Kart 7 though.

Amazing that people are Picking their game of the year before even playing it. Have you not read the uncharted 3 thread. These expectations can only lead to disappointment.

Definitely add:

Kirby Mass Attack
SM3DL
MK7

Without question right now, Uncharted 3 is the clear winner, by miles.

I seriously doubt about this...of all those games, i played 1 and 2, its just very good cinematic experience...the others are more true games...

My Uncharted 3 expectations were actually surpassed. And after the first 2 games those expectations were very, very high. I thought it was incredible. With videogames I don't expect the second coming of christ, just a good, fun game.

Uncharted 3 did launch with a few problems, the bigger ones being worked out right now, but overall it's absolutely an achievement. It may not revolutionize gameplay, but the gameplay is still very fun and combined with the good story, memorable characters, snappy dialogue, mindblowing visuals and unparalleled action... I don't see how it was a disappointment.

Again it's not perfect nor does it come with free blowjobs, but it's still a damn good game. However, that being said, yes... you're right. My thoughts about Uncharted 3 do not apply to everyone and more than a few people were disappointed, but I gather mainly because it wasn't as good as Uncharted 2 to them.

seems like the swiss shops got frightened after the news spread all over the web. they pushed the date back again, well maybe they are sold out or they will sit on the stuff in fear of nintendo.

and no it wasn't a mistake i know that they have it.

Oh look it's that soul/magic/heart bullshit again.

Yah. The atmosphere and story didn't mesh with my own aesthetic tastes. It's not a statement that can be objectified to Twilight Princess = bad.

That's why directly below the quoted statement, I added that I still believe it to be a great game. Just my least favourite 3D Zelda. Lots of people would agree with that.

Agreed, if it came with free BJ's, it would be GOTD.

My potential GotY are
Xenoblade
Pokemon Black and White
Skyward Sword
Dead Space 2

That's it. Since I don't have an HD console I couldn't play Dark Souls, Uncharted 3 etc;

Ghost Trick and Xenoblade are hovering around the top of my GOTY candidates thus far, bubbling under are a bunch of games from the HD twins which I can't even begin to order, it only gets harder from here on out and my low budget only allows for so much.
Yet I still didn't get two of my most anticipated games this year due to them being trapped in Japan with no signs of leaving. (VC3 and AAI2)

I thought UC2 had third act problems with the blue men plus the final boss fight. The ending itself was still brilliant though. I'm not hating on UC2 (one of my favourite games of the gen)..I just suspect there might be a degree of nostalgia working against UC3 right now, like you said.

With that in mind, I hear UC3 handles that whole "supernatural" finale twist much better. Can't wait to play it.

Man none of you even mentioned The Witcher 2. For shame.

Also: Skyrim doesn't count as a 2011 game. No point getting it until a few months have passed, and mods fix Bethesda's shortcomings.

Mine so far have been:

1. Deus Ex
2. Witcher 2
3. OoT 3D

Despite hating Oblivion, and disliking Fallout 3, I've found myself hyped up for Skyrim somehow. I'll probably wait til the hype dies down a bit to see if it's really better than Oblivion before I decide to buy it.

it does, it's really awesome

Uncharted 3's third act is wayyyy better than UC2's which helped me like it more overall... but I don't want to get off topic. but like you replied to me and I felt obligated to reply back.

Far as WW and TP go for me, I enjoyed both a lot. TP had Midna, who I think is the best new character the franchise has ever seen. In the end though Wind Waker remains my favorite of the 3D Zelda games (and second only to LTTP). The world was very well crafted. Unlike others, I loved sailing and it never got old or tedious. It also had one of the best final boss fights and endings in gaming for me. I consider both to be better than TOoT. While TOoT might be one of the most groundbreaking and influential games, I think the each 3D Zelda game made improvements on that formula. SS might be the game that truly shows what motion gaming should be like though, and perhaps be influential in that regard..

Playing through SS so far has been great, and I'm not even that far. But I'm not going to think about ranking it till I'm done.

Time must be killed until embargo's end. By any means possible.

So like when Rich said his review was going up at 12:01, that's inferior West Coast bizarro time right?

Yes, making the review live for us East Coasters at 3:01 AM.

Oh damn it. Fricking west coast rats making us Superior East Coast Master Racers wait on them. Happens all the time.

Runner-up behind Xenoblade Chronicles for me.

Personally, Xenoblade Chronicles is still my GOTY at this point. Skyrim or Skyward Sword both have shots at taking it for me, though.

Dark Souls could have done it, but the last third of the game is just so terrible to the point where it drags the entire game down for me.

In my experience, all of the following would sit well with me as Game of the Year:

- Portal 2
- Catherine
- Deus Ex
- Arkham City
- Uncharted 3

I'm sure Skyrim and Skyward Sword will follow suit. And I wouldn't be surprised if I played Dark Souls and found it to be GotY material, even though it's not quite my type of game.

Feep, I do not mean to single you out. There are plenty of people out there that have committed far worse offenses in reviews than you likely. But I do have to ask the question:

When you say that you construct writing in your Skyward review in order to hook the reader in [by saying that either you think Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword is better], how is one supposed to interpret such a tactic as anything but disingenous to the purpose of a review? I mean, while you say you avoided bias for the Zelda series, did you ALSO avoid the bias of trying to get hits on your website? That, to me, seems a more dangerous bias.

Whatever, no problem. Deathly Hallows Part 2 comes out at midnight, so that will make the wait until 3am pretty much non-existent.

Where? I want to watch it with ya~

Nothing?

Yeah, right. "OH NO, MY POOR ZERUDA! HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO YOU, MY LOVE?" :lol

If it helps the wait, the |OT| could be up before the review hits.

If you don't want to wait for the review, I can probably summarize: It'll be above a 9, contain glowing hyperbole and do nothing to reduce the agonizing pain you are experiencing waiting for the game's release. There you go. Now you can sleep.

A good writer can juggle both without one influencing the other. After all, we're not scientists. There's no science to reviewing a game. It's all just a opinions. So, a good writer will make their writing entertaining and fun to read, usually with a hook at the start to draw in readers, but substance in writing that eloquently and honestly articulates our opinions.
