Don't worry, you get used to that. That's your brain evolving so you can look at Internet without batting an eyelid.

So you haven't played the game for a second time.
He doesn't even have the telescope at that point 1st, 2nd even 64th time round. I should know, I'm a Zelda expert who has played all the games, including that Midna x Link game Green Scar is having fun with. I'm in the zone.

My biggest problem with the EGM score is that the score doesn't reflect the text. If the controls were as horrible as they are described then that should make the game nigh unplayable, seeing how much of it rides on the MotionPlus capabilities.

EGM's review reads like a 6/10, not an 8.5/10. I guess they didn't want to irk the fanbase too much?

Problem is, we know the controls work. EGM is factually wrong on that point.

No, you don't understand. I thought I was already completely desensitised. But that was another level. I think it was the accuracy that was the fucked up part for me. She uses the Fused Shadow... :(

ANYWAY. Time to order SS.

Precisely my point. It's like they are trying to be bodacious and stir controversy for the sake of it, but do not go the way through in a half-hearted attempt to hide their intentions and end up failing at being stealthy about the way they are scoring. I would have much more respect for them if they had actually gone through and given the game an awful score.

Skyward Sword Zelda > Tetra >>>>> Other Zeldas.

*takes step back* alright.

I've sort of always been in anticipation of Skyward Sword..but the early word of mouth (see: Edge review) got the hype boiling.

Last night's reviews were a touch disappointing, but hey who knows. I think I'll probably get Skyrim first and then wait to see the GAF feedback.

Wind Waker's still my favourite, by the way. It's good to hear that Skyward Sword is structurally similar. Cut me deep though when G4 said that the sky overworld felt like a bunch of empty rocks as opposed to unique and vibrant islands.

Oh well. Reviews are still great overall. Zelda is kinda critic proof..everyone doted over TP only for there to be a fairly substantial wave of fan disapointment following the release. Who knows what will happen this time.

*yawn*

I'll guess I'll get the Skyward Sword OT up today or tomorrow since the reviews are out and everyone is done committing seppuku because for some reason they still care about reviews and need their uninformed opinions validated, that should make the actual thread proper be cleaner.

They're never ones to be rushed, but 'better late than never' seems to be the Nintendo motto at the moment. Just as Super Mario 3D Land is the launch game the 3DS never had, we now wonder how things would've played out had Skyward Sword been released much earlier in the Wii's lifespan. For not only does it reenergise the entire Legend Of Zelda franchise but it also legitimises motion controls in a way no other game has come close to.

We can almost hear the snorts of derision as we type but forget everything that motion controls have become in the last five years and think back to what you imagined they might be when the Wii was first announced.
Okay Nintendo, you got me.

rushed OT cause of bad reviews confirmed :P

No seriously can't wait!

Skyward Sword is a great game for my Gamecube, 7 years ago... I'm not willing to see a blurry picture anymore on a HD-TV. That Gamespot footage reminds me how outdated everything looks. Super Mario Galaxy looks way better in 480p. I will wait for a real next-gen Zelda, in HD, for the Wii U.

I'm... actually surprised. But I guess AniHawk was right; gaming journalism is already pretty ho-hum on motion controls as it is, so something like this should be expected.

But anyway, scores are useless, so I spent the better part of the half-hour reading through these reviews.

I'm sorry, but EGM and GamePro's reviews are just garbage at a textual level. EGM's for making some odd, if not seemingly inaccurate complaints against the motion controls juxtaposed to Twilight Princess and GamePro for just falling into the "lol wii lol its TOO ZELDA!!" trap. GiantBomb's is more strangely written than bad. But the entire "Quest Log" complaint is pretty much as "Why isn't this more like Skyrim" as you can reasonably expect at this point.

But G4's review, the 1UP review, and TSA's impressions leave me pretty disappointed. Despite Feep's assurance to the contrary, I do not understand why Nintendo decided to incorporate a Temple of the Ocean King-esque bullshit area when that was probably the biggest reason PH's reception was as lukewarm as it was. Certain characters giving fetch quests just because they need %1 more proof that Link is some destined hero despite having shown such in the past 15 hours of gameplay is absolutely maddening. Fetch-Quests and backtracking through familiar territory only really works if items can open up drastically newer ways of traveling, something that only the greatest Metroid games have ever really managed to accomplish.

Moreover, other reviewers being like "It's not better than Twilight Princess" leaves me with a ":\" kind of expression, especially since I would probably rank Twilight Princess as my personal worst 3D Zelda game.

In short, it seems like SS, while great, just really focuses on things that would personally get to me. Man, this sucks.

Seriously holy hell does this sound good, just reading the Metro review now... incredible. I haven't been excited about a game for months, maybe years, and particularly I have practically zero interest in Wii games (even Super Mario Galaxy only held my interest for 10 minutes or so) but god damn does this game ever sound amazing. Amazing!

Although movement is controlled via the analogue stick on the nunchuk almost every other action in Skyward Sword uses motion controls. We were sceptical at first too but not only do this work perfectly, but it draws you into the game in a way we would never have imagined possible.

... it all works so well it manages to undo five years of motion control prejudice in mere minutes.
God damn I need this game.

The OT has been mostly done for weeks, just some GAFers wanted me to use graphical headers instead of my basic non-graphical ones, and I've obliged and will be implementing it into the post. They've been a real help.

It's a very basic OT. I don't do bloat OTs. You guys know what this game is about, mostly.

8.8 is a contender for the lowest point the gaming community has ever collectively sunk.
Man, I remember writing an angry blog post about the 8.8 back then and the funny thing is that a solitary 8.8 being the lowest score among the initial reviews is looking pretty good right now :P

The OT can go up whenever you want.

who are you to push what you think a game is represented numerically on someone else? especially when you haven't played the full thing like he has yet.

Exactly my view on all this.

Also, did anyone think it was going to be a ~*PERFECT*~ game or what?

Right, I'll probably get it up tonight then to let a little more of this review stuff wear off and we can have a clean Zelda discussion from the start

It's an OT before launch. Of course there will be review talk.

Compared to Uncharted 3, it's been pretty tame, actually.

that's what this thread is for, if you guys want to whine about reviews in the OT that's your prerogative but distance between the whining and the actual OT will lessen the impact for sure.

Zelda fans shouldn't be upset about the non-perfect scores. Most of those have complaints with fetch quests/design and motion controls... things you're not going to mind in the slightest if you're a Zelda or Nintendo fan.

Glowing reviews: FUCK YEA

Slightly lower than expected: Reviews? I didn't even read them. I'm way too non conformist to be bothered.

For people wondering why reviews matter: They don't really have a whole lot of intrinsic value, but they're often worth a look; it gets the hype flowing, we get to hear some early opinions, they form the first part of a game's consensus, for many games it's the first time we see them in action outside of the PR/Marketing sphere, and for a minority with restricted cash, it can serve as a good indicator of whether or not to make the day 1 leap of faith or wait for impressions.

I would bet a lot of money that only a very slim fraction of people like a game or hate a game SOLELY based on critical reception over their own experiences.

It's fun, and there's nothing wrong with getting hyped up about them to a point. Still, don't get me wrong..there are definitely a lot of poorly executed reviews.

The scores look pretty damn good to me. Getting 9 out of 10 and B+ along with a bunch of perfect scores probably means the game is very good.
Everything points to it being a lot better than Twilight Princess so I'm hyped to play it.

In Short: Revolutionary on at least two counts, with the best motion controls ever seen in a video game and an inspired reinvention and improvement of the Zelda formula.

Pros: Superbly accurate and effective motion controls. Clever subversion of the Zelda template, with endlessly inventive set pieces and equipment. Gorgeous artwork and music.

Cons: Camera control lacks subtlety. Script can be bloated in parts.

Score: 10/10
Sorry to go on about this again, but god damn. Such a rare thing for me to be excited about a game again, congratulations Nintendo.

Not too many reviews yet. The score shouldn't be representative of the game's final average score, I'm hoping for a 96 or 97.

And B+ is the new 8.8.

TP was released early in the HD gen; you can be sure that not a single publication will give GOTY to a non-HD game.

I doubt that.

These always go down. It's going to settle at like 89 or something. You seem pretty invested in that average, though.

Edge seemed pretty happy with it, do they do a goty thing?
