Eh?

I can understand an overlong story as a valid criticism, and I can understand preferring VA to text, but not both together. VA always - for me - makes things take *longer*, not less time. I read much faster than they can speak.

No, I'm saying they should either do the story aspects better (including VA) or drop trim them down.

Still confused by Patrick's review text. Weird ending aside, the part about the crafting system seems like he's really over thinking the whole thing.

It's that weird Patrick-y thing that I've started to notice where tries to make an argument about something design related and ends up with some weird wishy-washy thing like, "Yeah this is fun and great, but is it objectively great? I don't know and will never know. Maybe? Yes. No. I don't know. It's like... like a thing. I wish they had done something but I'm not sure what. What were they thinking? It is a mystery."

Pretty much what I expected to wake up to. Lower than expected scores, a banned Nintendo fanboy, and people pretending to like IGN because of a high score. I was right that it would be as bad as the U3 review thread though. People are too self aware now and Mama Robotnik isn't here collecting comments and begging for attention.
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure no ones been banned due to these reviews yet.
This is as bad as the Uncharted 3 review thread...how?

Just ignore him. The only person that got banned was Alkaline for Windwaker bashing I think?

They give them out every now and then, but clearly only for cream-of-the-crop games. Rome: Total War was the earliest one I remember. Half-Life 2, Orange Box, Street Fighter IV, Mario Galaxy... maybe an Advance Wars game once too, if I remember correctly, though I may have just pulled that out my arse. Guys have good taste.

I remember them saying they always wanted to give an Advance Wars game a 10 but never did.
They would have given Dark Conflict a 10 if it wasn't for the story and art-style (which they hated but still gave the game a 9 because of the gameplay).

They are an excellent site, and anyone who likes Edge for saying it how it is and valuing gameplay over everything else should check them out.

. It seems fitting that saving the world alongside Link will, for many of us, act as the first and last time we spend dozens of hours with a game inside our Wiis.
UGH.

Yeah.. I heard that someone was banned due to him/her ranting against fans of Wind Waker, so that wasn't really from the reviews.

Sounds like something I would write. Maybe I have a chance in the video game reviewing business!

The only praise IGN can get is finally deciding they should at least give a single over-inflated perfect 10 score to at least ONE game published on a Nintendo console, as it has regularly been doing on Microsoft and Sony consoles for over a decade.

But I mainly chalk that up to Matt Cassamassina having been pretty level-headed, unlike every other editor.

Anyway the 10 from Edge is what gives me a lot of thought.....

And a much bigger mystery is how some editors consider Twilight Princess a pinnacle of the Zelda series.....

Why do you so understimate yourself?

EDGE comparison makes sense, seeing as Jenkins has wrote for them a few times. Oh, and it was founded by Tony Mott, EDGE editor of old.

Chiming-in from work: I loved the observation about the apparent divide between European reviewers' tastes and American reviewers' tastes. Very, very interesting..

You're better than that. Come over to my house and I'll pay you to rake the leaves in the backyard.

Nice to see good reviews, but not surprised one bit. Nintendo always pulls out the stops for its top franchise. Can't wait till I get to play it.

It's an innacurate one though, seeing as much of mainland Europe have reviewed it relativley low.

It's the UK reviews that have been high.

Patrick certainly doesn't have anywhere near the review chops that the GB regulars do. I hope he improves.

Patrick's review is fine, and I feel that he explained his points earnestly and concisely which after Jeff's sprawling MW3 review, I was afraid GB was losing touch with succinctness.

The point that you guys are bringing up (Skyrim vs. Skyward Sword comparision) is given minor weight in the review and minor impact to the fact that it isn't given a perfect score.

A slow start, the unimaginative harp, lack of modern quest UI and the frustration he felt with a very tedious portion of the game seem to me to be legitimate reasons to not award a game a perfect score.

If there were more granularity in the GB review scale, he may have had the opportunity to give it more than an "8/10", but I think you guys get caught up too much in the review score trap. The positive things he mentioned in the review make me legitimately excited to play another Zelda, so as long as you don't stare at the stars too long, it shouldn't bother you either.

I'd really like to hear Jeff Gersmann's opinion on skyward sword patrick's review is a bit retarded as i expected.

other ones i care about are eurogamer and gamespot. already got a 10/10 from edge which is good enough for me

Goddamnit yes I'm hyped.

However, watching the webcast of Zelda marathon, the original Zelda is definitely as tedious as I remember it and I really didn't get into the series until it went 3D.

Specifically the title was
"Midna, holding a mayonnaise packet, punches Link in the stomach."
and then there was a screencap.

Do I dare even ask what this is pertaining to?

Dont be rough on me, EmCeeGramr

Xenoblade 2 to be EU/JP exclusive.

I really like Edge. For all the criticism games journalism generally receives, they do a good job.
I agree with that. I think it's always sad to see when GAF takes a shit about Edge scores when they have given out a controversal score yet again, because Edge (and GamesTM) are the only video game magazines I know of that don't feel like they are written for (and to a certain degree by) 14 year olds...

Edge is also the one video game magazines I don't feel ashamed of reading in public :lol
