Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

TP is one of the few games that I couldn't play on an HDTV; jaggies were just too terrible. I don't mind for most Wii games, but TP and NMH were just ridiculous; but they look great on a CRT, I just wish I could see the game in widescreen.

I definitely noticed the jaggies, but my recent run through of Twilight Princess was literally the first video game I've ever played on anything other than an SDTV, and the difference was so drastic that the jaggies didn't bother me

Also that very much sucks to the guy whose gamestop isn't doing a midnight launch. I live in a bustling college town (at least 30K+ students), so that's probably part of why the one I reserved it at is doing a midnight launch.

Ok, this has me seriously considering detting up dolphin. how much will that cost me?
What hardware are you running?

Actually: probably better if you post inquiries about this in the Dolphin thread. While you're there, you can check out some of the SS screens that have been posted.

Yeah ours is as well.
Zelda is pretty big around here, as is anime.

I haven't checked with mine but I live in a big city too. A search on google had a bunch of hits about Gamestop not doing midnight launches for it.

I think it is really dependent on the store. the one by me is managed by one of my friends and they said there will be one. they have plenty of preorders for it. I knew this state was awesome.

So, after the first few 4/5's and B reviews it seems the game is getting mostly 10s and 9.5/10s

Very nice.
Yeah, all the reviews that came out after the initial rush have all been extremely positive it seems.

so, whats the biggest offender so far?

As far as I read people are saying that is less "Zelda" than Twilight Princess which I hated so that's pretty much what I wanted to hear.

Zelda really is one of those franchises where it meant so many different things to so many different kinds of people that it is literally impossible to appease everyone. That is why osme of them are lost to other game franchises, like Uncharted and Skyrim, and the ones who stay behind constantly bitter over which Zelda was he best one and which it should follow. the simple fact is, there is no direction they can take Zelda that wont piss off some part of the fanbase, and it will probably result in the mixed reviews we are seeing now.

Yeah, the thing about Zelda games mish-mashing so many different aspects together is that every Zelda fan has a different preference about what should be emphasized the most. So when the new one comes out with a different balance of overworld/dungeon focus... naturally people start pining for what the prior game had and the new one doesn't.

When you have franchises that have lasted as long as Mario and Zelda have

They have A LOT to be compared to in their own franchise base, it gets harder and harder to top themselves

I think Plasmas will be able to handle Skyward Sword better. I'm not sure why, just my hunch.
I've been running my Wii through a 51" Viera Plasma w/ component cables @ 480p for years and the smoothness + quality has been superb - jaggies were minimal with the main offenders i.e. SSBB, TP & Conduit I&II, while the visually smoother games such as SMG 1&2 & MKWii were a pleasure to watch on the big screen.

The quality of image was noticeably better than my friend's Bravia LCD, where even on 480p the jaggies were unbearable. I'd say Plasma is the way to go for Skyward Sword.

*Random Question*

No sir, I'm not banned. GN is banned here, but I'm free to chat. If you have any Skyward Sword questions, I'm more than happy to answer what I can.

The same goes for anyone else!

Is there a "Master Quest" or second quest? If so, what does it do differently from the main quest? That's all I really want to know.

Could also have a lot to do with the TV settings. Most of my friends have the contrast and sharpness on their HDTVs completely maxed out. "Why do you have your TV set this way?" "It looks better." -_-

Been playing it for about 6 hours now, a big thumbs up to the music (even the dungeons) and the artstyle which really is a mix of TP and WW.

Exactly. I think part of it was exacerbated by the fact that LTTP could have been interpreted as both realistic and cartoon looking, so when OOT came out, some wanted to see a more fanciful world, and some were content with the mostly realistic look of it. OOT still left many design elements up to interpretation though, so it wasnt until Majoras Mask went the darker route that I think it really started to divide the fanbase. then Wind Waker came along and there was a clear chasm between those who preferred a clearly more dark direction and who loved the charming simplicity and playable cartoon look that the franchise was going towards. The ones of us who are still around seem to have accepted that Zelda is whatever Nintendo wants it to be and we go with it. I am one of those types. People comparing it to Skyrim probably held Twilight Princess or Majoras Mask in higher regard.
The real rift though seems to be what people believe Zelda MUST BECOME versus those of us who know that it can become many different things. It doesn't just have to go one direction. I love that each game throws surprises at us. I love that Nintendo understand the elements that make Zelda work and they continue to incorporate those elements while trying to evolve the series. It isn't simple to do. Most developers would probably fuck it up royally.

I don't really see the art as a cross between Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, but as a more evolved version of Ocarina of Time's artwork. Although some would say that Twilight Princess was that, but I feel that it was more like Nintendo was trying to make it more... grittier? Twilight Princess' art didn't really evoke anything from Ocarina of Time for me, but seeing videos of this game for the first time, I'm definitely getting that feeling.

Probably just me though v(o_o)v

Not trying to self promote, but you should read my HD Zelda thread if you want to look at a lot of interesting opinions on where Zelda should head next visually.

This is kind of what I am talking about. To some, it is an evolution of OOT and that means something different to them, from someone who thinks it is more a combination of TP/WW. It could be both,l or it could be neither, but they will take Zelda in another direction next time, and it could be more pleasing to you, or to me. That is the difficulty that Nintendo faces bringing this franchise forward into HD.

2d Metroid or bust?

For the most part, you had the camp that liked all Metroids, only liked the 2D ones, or only liked the Prime ones without much flip-flopping throughout the years.

Although, these days its just Metroid Fans against Other M fans.
I kid, I kid.

What's up with Gamespot and GT being so much later than the rest?

GT at least usually have their review out not long after IGN.

I wish I could answer, my friend. There are still things under embargo even after the review embargo is up. The next/final embargo date is for Nov. 20th, and that's a release on pretty much all content.

I'm really not sure on what planet that scores like this aren't fantastic. Especially in light of the competition this game faces both on a technological and popularity front.

Looks like we won't get Gamespot's review soon. He's not done with the game and he doesn't want to commit to an overly strong position before he does.

Delaying their review release is actually a pretty smart move (whether intended or not). They'll surely get more visits by releasing it a couple days later instead of releasing it at the same time as two dozen others.

edit:

@RMC, like your site. Have a question. I've skimmed through your review and I don't think you mentioned anything about the stamina bar. What's your opinion of it? I've seen some mixed impressions on its implementation so far and it seems people would rather it not have been included at all.
