Sleeping Dogs |OT| not releasing this would have been a True Crime

Bottom left reminds me how far away from an accurate representation of a big city we still are.

We're basically playing every open world game in ghost towns.
I hope we see size like that soon.

The amount of fun that could be had is ridiculous.

Hope is the key word though. I don't think it'll happen soon at all.

So on the fence about this title. Help me GAF!

Edit: If nothing else, tell me how good the plot is, that's my most important consideration.

I rarely care about stories in games besides Uncharted, GTA and a few others, but this is one of the few that made me care about what happens next, you're always ready to get to the next mission and advance the plot.

I forgot to mention (in this thread) that I made a video showing the peculiar physics bug I encountered.

The most peculiar bug I encountered was when I stuffed a body into my trunk, somehow while driving the body dropped out hitting a moped driver behind me, who then needed a medic van which then ran over him, the guy in the trunk calmly walked away.

Plot is good, voice acting is superb, they really went bells and whistles getting the right people onboard it's a fantastic 20 hours game.

The execution of the plot is better than most open-world games. I'd probably say that this has a better narrative than Uncharted even. If you like flawed, human characters with good to decent writing and stellar voice-acting with a well-executed character arc, then I would definitely recommend this game.

The narrative of Sleeping Dogs is actually its strongest point, imo, considering its genre.

Bought on the second day of release and still haven't managed to put it down, even long after scoring the Platinum. Now, I'm just replaying missions over and over and building up my score on each mission. Managed to make it into the top ten global leaderboards for "The Election" last night.

Figuring strategy and XP numbers during the combat is simply the fucking best. Nothing beats the leg break -> arm break -> elbow smash combo. Also, during shootouts, disarming everyone as quick as you can and then fighting them fist to fist is a great way to rack up points as well, even though the disarm to *beeeeeoooop* (slo mo) -> headshot *beeeeoooooop* headshot *beeooooooop* headshot is addicting as hell.

And I dont know if GAF is like this for anyone else, but instead of the GAF logo on my web address bar and window tab, Ive got the SD logo instead. It's been like this since last week =P

Clothes and Cars!

Just beat this game last night.

A few bugs and silly things:

-I had a bug where I went down from my ghetto apartment, got my car from the garage and noticed an even next to my apartment entrance. I got out of my car and triggered the event. The mission was to drive someone somewhere so I go to my car which is already out and the person doesn't get in. The message says "get your car from the garage" but the garage guy is gone. I go to make it open but nothing happens. I had to restart.

-There is HTML code and instructions for the "A" button when gambling on the boat.

-I chase a guy on bike who closes the gates behind him and locking me in. I don't notice an explosive next to the gate. He waits for me to blow it up, triggering a scene.

Other than that though, the game was great and I had a blast. A lot of times I get burned out on a game and it's a struggle to keep going due to the gameplay or story not being as interesting as I hoped. This game had me hooked all the way and I was eager to see what would hapen next. It was a good cop story. Graphics are amazing. Had some really nice ambiant tracks while driving around. Fleshed out, detailed, alive world. The gunplay and fighting is something that GTA needs to take a REALLY good look at. Fighting plays just like Batman but Wei is no Batman. Kind of sluggish in comparison but still pretty good. Voice acting is really good and I praise the team for hiring actual Chinese to voice each character. I'm buying this for my brother's birthday coming up. It'll be a shame if he misses out on this because I know he will love it, yet he has probably never heard of it.

This game is a 9/10 in my book.

Game cheats on cock fights. 95% times the other cock will win. That's ballcocks.

I'm -15.000 thanks to those cockfights. I haven't won a single time and there is no way whatsoever to predict a winner.

Cock A: 0 wins
Cock B: 435 wins

..but guess what - cock A wins.

On another Bully related note, the songs by Bei Bei on the Softly station: "Hot Thursday", "The Blue Grotto" , "Into the Wind" and "Little Sunrise" are tracks off an album by her and Shawn Lee called "Into The Wind"

Really wanna thank SD and UFG for introducing me to some great new music:

Strange Talk - "Climbing Walls"
Bombay Bicycle Cub - "Shuffle"
Guilty Simpson - "Dreads"
Rustie - "After Light"
Queen - "Dragon Attack" (Finally a Queen song that I love)
Emika - "Drop the Other"
Battles - "Futura"
The Big Pink - "1313"
New Navy - "Oceans"

and of course Hudson Mohawke.

easily the best licensed soundtrack I've ever heard.

I've also decided to double dip and buy the 360 version. Never done that before for any other title in my 25+ years of gaming.

You should just stick to the 100K bets and save after a win, load after a loss. 10 wins and you're done.

Just finished the main storyline, this is really a great, great game. The best way I can put it is that it is first game that has managed to capture what made the original Mafia such a classic on PC. Mafia was a great mix of an interesting story and characters, an interesting city, and varied and balanced missions; it all just felt right, and it's one of my favorite games ever.

This game captures a lot of what made that game great, and adds an even more robust open world city that doesn't get in the way of the story but is just a blast to drive through and has some fun exploration elements. It probably helps that I played this on my new PC, first good gaming PC I've had in 4-5 years. It really is a stunner and I definitely think it's one of the best games of the year. As a side note, the main character's VA is fantastic, and one of the best VA performances is a game ever.

On the matter of the VA for Wei, I completely agree. I saw him the short voice-talent video and it seems he actually changed his voice for Wei, which makes it even cooler. I honestly think half of what made Wei so awesome was his VA.

Also when I first loaded the game I was actually so happy I could travel around the whole of Hong Kong without restrictions. It was a nice breath of fresh air, as I was used to open world games 'opening up' as the story progressed.

Absolutely loving this game so far. Probably the most enjoyable sandbox game i've played since San Andreas. Glad to hear it's been selling well too (in the UK anyway) - it deserves to do well.

I've never fiended so hard for single player DLC this gen. I almost bought that Red Envelope pack just so I had something new to do and search for.

So I tried the demo on my 2500k @ 4.5GHz, GTX 560Ti, 8 GB ram. With the below very modest settings (notice fps limited to 30) I still got crappy fps with frequent dips for example when I was fighting the guys on the roof. Also lots and lots of stutter. I thought this was supposed to be a great port? I play most other games at ~60 fps with higher graphic setting, this runs horrible in comparison. The controls are also incredibly sluggish, with a delay on everything from spinning the camera to moving the character.

Same here, apparently street races (with what seems like actual story elements) and something called a SWAT pack is what we'll getting first.

That SWAT pack and that Shaolin temple thing were bonus content that came when you reserved at Best Buy or Steam or something, yet it's been pulled from the PSN/XBL store from what I've heard.

I wouldn't mind some extra street races, but even that I'd be able to wipe out in a brief sitting. The races were pie in this, especially when you're driving the best auto for each race class.

Also, that 80s retro Triad pack I found to be worth it for the fingerless gloves alone. Not only do they look supremely badass, but they give you additional reach during combat.

Edison Chen and Will Yun Lee deserve some sort of award for their performances. I never get tired of seeing their acting skills in action no matter what mission I'm on.

Make sure you actually have your settings activated and it's not stuck on the pre-set Extreme or something.

Oh. Well, if you press one of the buttons (depends on what system you're playing on) a table comes up showing which combinations that gives winning. In very basic, just try to get as many of the same kind or try to get as many pairs as possible (also 3 equal + 1 par).

One of the glitches I ran into. LOL. And another one, for some reason the game won't let me access my wardrobe. Not that I don't mind.

I just realized what the only irk of the game is to me.

The fact I only ever beat guys up to the licensed soundtrack about 3 or 4 times.

Beating that crew up on "Minibus Racket" to Rustie was the fucking tits.

-15 000? Man, I'm like -1 000 000. Cockfights in the west port are minimum 50 000.

I'm hesitating to pull the trigger on this game because it looks awfully like GTA; a game I cannot bare to play

Depends on why you don't like GTA. If it's the gameplay and driving/fighting/shooting thing, then you're still not going to like this. If you don't like GTA because of the storytelling then you might like this a heckuva lot more.

Can't read your mind on why you don't like GTA dude.

Pull the trigger. The only true similarity to GTA is the open city. Every other "similarity" are elements GTA fails miserably on and Sleeping Dogs rebuilds, reinvents and reincarnates. Game of the fucking year.

Just made global top 10 for Intensive Care. Disarm like a mothatrucka.

Are there any serious flaws with this game? The couple I seem to keep running across are iffy car controls and lackluster side missions, but I've read that both are debatable.

The car control is debatable but I would agree about most of the side missions. There isn't enough meat for my taste to anything outside of the main plot missions. Some juicy, completely optional, side plots with missions would have been nice. This is only a minor complaint though; the game is fantastic while it lasts. It's a good length game too.

The ride to the final mission really gave me a sad, dramatic feeling that not many games have accomplished in the past.

The combination of the voices, the flashbacks in your head and that amazing music just...does it. I loved it.

That track also plays on
The Funeral, on Ninja Tune and its the insrumental version. It should be on when you are on your way to Uncle Po's burial with Jackie after you pick up your suits.
