Sleeping Dogs |OT| not releasing this would have been a True Crime

Holy god damn.. movie looks fucking ace.
Yes and with my wife feeding my daughter and her taking a nap, I can start cracking. Part of he problem with my comp broke I'm stick on tablets and phones, but I'm breaking out the laptop so I can type a lot quick and switch tabs easier than an iPad.

One last freebie, the rather nice and underrated Triads The Inside Story

I haven't even touched on the financed and paid for by gangsters as a vanity piece films!

This is just part one...many more to come. :)

Hong Kong Triad Flicks Part 1.
The Basics aka John Woo Films
These are the typical Hong Kong Triad movies that everyone and their mom knows. Usually people with only this level of knowledge are artsy “foreign film fans”, QT fanboys, and anyone who read a AP article about John Woo or Chow Yun Fat. Nothing wrong with these films in anyway and there are great gateway movies. Our goal will be to take you further though.

A Better Tomorrow (1986)

A Better Tomorrow 2 (1987)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F6bD3vYuw0 (English Langauge Trailer produced by Cinema City)
It’s not a great movie and you’ll want to punch Dean Shek in the nuts at times (the movie was done as a benefit to Shek who had money issues).
The entire movie is redeemed by EAT THE RICE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0fEJt54vxI
The final end battle (Note Shing Fui On comes back from the dead. lol RIP Big Silly, he passed away a few years ago after struggling with cancer, he was a great guy).

Skip A Better Tomorrow III...you’re not missing much.

The Killer (1989)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c1JPPkE08w
US Trailer with reviews based on critics who saw messed up subs and thought it was an action comedy. Great movie, look again for Shing Fui On as the main bad guy.
Hard Boiled (1991)

The epic original Hong Kong Trailer

Tease for beyond the John Woo looking glass.
Just Heroes Directed by John Woo and Wu Ma

Done as a charity pick for Shaw Brothers great Cheng Cheh (who was also Woo’s mentor and Wu Ma’s) this movie is stuff to the brim with HK and Shaw Brothers greats. Enjoy seeing a young Stephen Chow. It’s got Danny Li, David Chiang, Chen Kuan Tai and many others. Basically Cheng Cheh wasn’t in great financial state and the movie was done as a benefit for him, instead of retiring Cheng went to direct another film. :) Cheng was a legend and through his Shaw Brothers films you can see the development of Heroic Bloodshed and Brotherhood (even with most films being period pics) which are hallmarks of John Woo’s films and most of the Hong Kong Triad Cinema, without Cheng Cheh, Hong Kong Cinema would be far far poorer.

Oh it seems people uploaded all of these movies in full to youtube, strange world we live in.

Next Up: Triad Vanity Projects Two films made for the reason of honor a dead triad and one made by a man (Broken Tooth) to honor himself.

Holy hell thank you I will be very busy watching HK cinema pre-release.

Hong Kong Film Flicks Part 2: It’s The 80s Do a Lot of Coke and Vote for Ronald Reagan
I know I said Triad Vanity Projects would be up next, BUT considering I just did John Woo it makes sense to deal with the movies before and after A Better Tomorrow that helped make it a great time for the Hong Kong Gangster Film

The Club (1981)
Directed by Kirk Wong (of the insanely underrated The Big Hit) this movie actually predates A Better Tomorrow by nearly 5 years. It star Chan Wai Man.
Chan Wai Man is a tough tough motherfucker...don’t fuck with Chan Wai Man.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg0wfyACzCQ

The movie features the use of a boat fan as a weapon

Opening of the movie since I can’t find a trailer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tktekI6q2Q

Hong Kong Godfather (1985)
I love the ever loving shit out of this movie. It feature director by Johnny Wang and Stars Leung Kar Yan aka Beardy. This movie is filled with heroic bloodshed up the ass. Avoid old non remastered censored copies. You know how boss this movie is? When Beardy is reading the newspaper the ad on the backpage is for Rambo: First Blood Part II!

End fight spoilers...but you should still see it and this isn’t even the whole fight!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHfhKsLPQ8g

On the subject of Beardy here is an excuse to show the end fight of Thundering Mantis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynsuaBPDFvo
Beardy and Sammo Hung
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9at2zelCKMA

Tiger Cage 1
Yuen Woo Ping and Donnie Yen. Also features Beardy without a beard and Johnny Wang
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf1F0QuFC18
Tiger Cage 2 (made in 1990...sue me)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guZz8FjShjk
Features early Robin Shou.

Dragon Family (1988)
Lar Kar Leung Gangster films. Trailer will confirm the movie is filled with insane action
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKoc0Ct9Ho0

Tragic Hero (1987)
Chow Yun Fat and Andy Lau. Two part movie with Rich and Famous as the other part
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8GtIhngQg8

Flaming Brothers (1987)
Alan Tang and Chow Yun Fat

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6eEQrsFnm4&feature=plcp

More from the 1980s coming up a little later

Bonus

Casino (1998)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPZ2jowCwCw
Made for the express purpose to honor Macau Gangster Broken Tooth starring Simon Yam...and financed by Broken Tooth.

The Last Blood (1991)
Nothing to do with Triads EVERYTHING to do with insane action from Wong Jing. Just watch the trailer and pretend not to be interested.

Emailed GMG to cancel my preorder, guess its in their hands if it actually goes through or not now. Would much rather spend the money on BL2 after seeing the streams.

Dang, this is worrying that people are canceling pre-orders just based of streams.

Streams are pretty darned reflective of what the game will be like when we play it. I'm definitely still renting it from Redbox, though. Not all that pleased with how lifeless the city appears to be, but the combat looks like it can be fun. It just doesn't look like a city I'd have much fun creating havoc in like I did GTA and SR2.

If nothing else watch the movies in the thread. lol

Nice picks. The Killer is one of my favourites.

And yeah, not crazy about what I'm seeing on the streams either, but it seems like there's some fun to be had. Certainly worth the Gamefly rental.

Amazon sold Spec Ops for $25.00 two days after release? or was it the week of release

sale could come sooner..

I bought Dragon's Dogma from Amazon for 39.99 within a week of release, so it's possible. Redbox having it this Tuesday will make waiting for a reduced-price purchase easier. But if the game is awesome, I'll just return the rental and pay full price.

Supposedly the preload is coming either tonight or tomorrow. I found this while browsing the topic on GMG (since I want my god damn key!), it's apparently from the sleeping dogs forum administrator

http://forums.sleepingdogs.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1053

For what it's worth my GMG confirmation email said this:
This game is not available for download yet. It will be unlocked on 13-Aug-2012. Any required keys will be made available on that date.

Cancelling pre-orders, overreaction much? After GTA4 got 10's and GOTY's reviews are pretty much bullshit to me.

Regardless I'm supporting the dev for not treating the PC port like absolute shit.

I don't think it's an overreaction. People are allowed to make opinions based on gameplay streams. It's showing the game from all lights, and if they aren't digging it like they were the promotional videos then I understand it.

Yeah, I wasn't talking about reviews, just the gameplay streams.

Though either way, I never actually pre-ordered. Was already leaning towards a rental.

It's an overreaction to see something you don't care for and then cancel a purchase of it? Sounds like someone who's smart with their money to me.

or someone who is indecisive.

I only throw down money on pre-orders if I know what the game is and how it will play, putting money down before doing research is silly.

I pre-ordered Borderlands 2. What if they fucked it up somehow? If I see that they've fucked it up in streams prior to release, I'm canceling it. That's not indecisiveness. That's being an informed consumer. And honestly the only reason I pre-order anything in the first place is because nowadays you need to in order to get the god damned DLC that they ripped out of the game.

Why is people cancelling this? It looks fucking awesome.

I bought it due to strong word of mouth from previews.

You got some people complaining about the length of the game. Some about the lack of activity in the city itself. Some people hate the lack of quality gunplay. Meh. What I saw in the feeds looks pretty damn interesting, and I love the dialogue that I've heard. Definitely putting a reserve in as soon as I see it pop up at a nearby Redbox.

Pre-order cancelling is weird. Not because I'm opposed to the idea, moreso that I don't know why anybody would pre-order unless they were pretty damn confident they were going to buy the game, based on hands-on previews, trailers, walkthroughs, etc. I feel people that pre-order based purely on marketing hype are doomed to be forever disappointed. Most trailers are meticulously constructed to sell you the game at any cost.

Like, I'd cancel a pre-order for a game I'm excited for if I found out the game was broken or something like that. But for game content quality I doubt I would, because I probably never would have pre-ordered in the first place.

Amazon is offering $10 Credit and the Martial Arts pack with the PS3 and 360 versions.. i remember the PC version had a $5.00 credit offer but that's missing....

I guess not, but in your previous post you said this

Is the melee good enough to make up for the lack of gunplay?

which kinda shows you haven't been researching much time on what the game is about considering it's been shown on YT and by the developers to be very combat/martial arts heavy for it's gameplay style. DLC in most cases can still be obtained a day before or even afterwards in some cases depending on your platform.

Yeah, then again I grew up watching Hong Kong movies too. Having them focus more on melee than gunplay makes it much more irresistible for me.

I'm not looking for it to be as good as Red Dead Redemption, but this looks fun! That's enough in my book.

Lot of people on GAF aren't going to buy it in the first place. That phrase gets thrown around ALL the time in OTs. I could say 'the color purple isn't used a lot in far cry 3', and i'd get one 'WTF PREORDER CANCELLED'

I had it pre-ordered on NewEgg for $47.99, but just decided to cancel it since Darksiders 2 is also coming this week. Still going to get this one, but I think $40 or less is my new target for a purchase price.

I never pre-ordered Sleeping Dogs, though. I'll openly admit to not knowing shit about the game until Friday when I started watching streams.

Using the Borderlands 2 example again, if I hadn't pre-ordered 6 months ago, I wouldn't have the 20 dollar off a future purchase coupon. They removed that months ago and made it 10 dollars off, but I still get to keep the 20 dollar promotion. Two weeks ago they dropped the 10 dollar promotion. The pre-ordering situation can be horrible, but sometimes you have to do it just to ensure you get the best offer. And it's not a bad idea to do it since Amazon lets you cancel pretty much all the way up to the day before it releases without penalty.

Really? Because Sleeping Dogs was so much talked about in the last few months that I found it strange. It either means that the game is pretty good or Square Enix has been promoting the game well.

I bought it after reading some reviews, tweets, hands on from those who got the game early. Seems like they're having fun.

Watchdogs is the only game with "dogs" in it that I can recall hearing anything about. I'm hyped to try Sleeping Dogs now. So much so that I may put off Darksiders 2 in favor of it.

I've been playing this for the last 2 days.

Embargo broken! Might as well tell us more now.

Well that's the thing. You could sometimes tell from reading previews or hands on that the writer actually HAD fun from the game. They try to be neutral, but the choices of words and such does give it away.

The articles for Sleeping Dogs kinda had this. It really seemed like most writing it was looking forward to play the final version.

Edit: I could be wrong, and have been wrong before. So don't take my word for it for now :)

Since i barely get anything outside of pre-orders (coupons and all that) i feel the same.
I only cancelled Dark Souls' pre order due to the recent turn of events.
Though there are times when i may be thinking of getting a game i like on launch, so i pre order it, but then realize there's something else (not necessarily a game) i need to spend my money on that month so i cancel the pre order and get the game later on.
Not the case with Sleeping Dogs though, can't wait to get it.

Is true about the pre-load beginning tomorrow?! C'mon I need this!!!

Just got this e-mail from GMG:

Thank you for prepurchasing Sleeping Dogs: Limited Edition from Green Man Gaming.

You are receiving this email because your game will be available for download on 13 Aug 2012 at 01:01 UTC.
