Slow news day at IGN. "Wii U: It's Time to Change the Name"

Nothing against Rich or Aubrey, but I checked out IGN Nintendo a few days ago and the headline stories went something along the lines of this:

"Top Shiggy Games We Love"
"What Dream Games Should Ninty Develop"
"Retro and Mature Zelda. Match made in heaven."

It just sounded like IGNBoard kids posting news stories. I understand I am a bit older, but that definitely was not the direction Matt / Fran / Bozon / Peer originally started IGN Nintendo with. But hey, maybe their readership is up with their extremely skewed demographic.

Yeah, I kind of miss the old IGN Nintendo crew. Didn't always agree with them but they were always honest, sometimes brutally so, and they definitely were interested in the direction the company was going. Now it just seems like trashy blog posts. We have better posts from people here on GAF. The recent Metroid Prime one comes to mind.

IMO this is better than the Bozon/Matt era which was just non-stop emo stories of "please buy this please please" about every third party wii game. They could tone down the blog-like nature of their articles though. It's just slow news right now until E3. I'm guessing this is timed for the shareholder announcement on wednesday, which would be the best time to change the name.

Tuesday: TOP 10 REASONS WHY VITA SHOULD BE MORE LIKE A GAME BOY
Wednesday: 5 WAYS THE DREAMCAST LIVES ON THROUGH 3DS
Thursday: 7 UNANNOUNCED NEO GEO GAMES WE WISH WERE ON 360
Friday: 5 ZELDA GAMES THAT COULD BE MADE INTO FINAL FANTASY GAMES

Work done.

I cannot stop thinking about the contents of these articles. These are hilarious. Is there an IGN headline generator? There should be.

We be tossin', enforcin', with specs far from awesome
Causin' more tears to flow than the Amazon
And the analysts said -- you're dead!
3DS price drop -- we roll in green instead
Sony what was that? Aiyyo, the N is back
Makin' other platforms go BOM-BA!, like Super Cat
We fear no-one, oh no, here come
The WU-Tang shogun, straight from Mushroom Kingdom!

For the mods;
In case you don't know, this is a humorous take on a classic Wu Tang Clan song with a bit of Nintendo flavor added. If you find it offensive in any way, please let me know and I will promptly delete it.

What the hell else are Rich and Audrey supposed to write about? The more high-profile backlash against the "Wii U" name the better. Rich can be a little reactionary and Audrey can be a little fangirlish but for the most part they provide great coverage, and the podcasts are really good.

But honestly I think most core gamers won't use the name as a deciding factor anyways, and the "Wii" brand has lots of mass appeal. So I can't blame Nintendo too much for utilizing it in the console name. Wii U just sounds terrible though.

This is glorious. If someone could do the Inspectah Deck verse as well that'd be great.

The Wii-G

After thinking the Wii had the worst name for console hardware of all time and then watching it go on to succeed spectacularly I'm not going to 2nd guess what Nintendo calls anything. Somebody over there knows what they're doing while I clearly do not.

Wait, what. People actually like the WiiU name? Or is it we just like to disagree with ign?

I'm usually not one to care about names/branding ect. But WiiU is really pathetic.

Exactly. Matt actually had contacts with Nintendo and broke news. These new guys only do blog-like articles. Not worth visiting anymore even.

I don't think it's pathetic at all as I didn't think the Wii name was terrible(out there at first, sure).

Nintendo are now naming their consoles to fit the philosophy of the particular system and/or its goals.

I have no problem with that, don't care how it sounds audibly.

Wii U to me means all the other players using remotes and nunchuks, etc.. and you using the main controller to interact in endless crazy ways.

They don't even have "teams" anymore from what I understand. Bad move, their management seems pretty damn poor.

bad management and shitty articles from News Corp? what is this world coming to

Wii U is a terrible, terrible name however. I didn't like Wii, but this is so much worse. The explanation Reggie gave for it at E3 doesn't help matters. Wii University would even be a better meaning behind the name

If I've learned one thing this generation it's that it doesn't matter what you name your console.

Actually the opposite. As much as some people hate the Wii name, Nintendo has done something amazing with it. They've taken a name that is not part of your typical arsenal of words and turned it into a Google like brand.
Using a word as Wii is much friendlier and more approachable then a Xbox or Playstation, and the way Nntendo reflected that friendliness in their console design, controller and advertisement is brilliant.

So yes, the name is important, it might sound stupid if you think about it a lot, but it works, easy to remember and has become what Nintendo is instead of being called Nintendo, they are the Wii company.

Letting go of the Wii name would be incredibly stupid, and Nintendo needs to do a Apple style marketing blitz in order to convey why Wii U is a upgrade, a new thing and not just a controller. They need to make mainstream headlines, which is why I think they should have done a unveil and event outside of E3, and invite mass media to it instead of the gaming press.

~ii bows~

I agree, the name sucks and it should be changed. But since I am usually wrong about these things, if they keep the name it will probably work wonders for them with the unbathed masses.

This is one case where I am not really sure if the name is good or bad.

The good:
The name is recognizable. It is the name of the most successful nintendo home console of all time. It is associated with family friendly, multiplayer fun. It is associated with accessibility.

The bad:
It is associated with weak graphics. It is associated with casual games which might limit appeal to traditional gamers. It sends a message to developers that this is another Wii, which suggests the target audience nintendo is aiming for and the types of games they should be making.

If Nintendo keeps the name, THEY SHOULD CHANGE THE LOOK OF THE CONSOLE.
Something to differentiate it that screams: "This is a new console"

Honestly, it would be harder for Nintendo to choose a worse name. They'd have to name it "The Fartmaster" or something to actually have it sound less appealing, and even then I bet a lot of people would prefer it.

Keeping the Wii name I can understand as long as they clearly show that it's a new console but why Wii U? It honestly just sounds like crap and doesn't easily roll off the tongue.

You forgot about P-Tone aka Phantom Raviolis, Inventor of Slaps, The Panty Melter, Titanium Beard Brother #1, Typhoon Hands, Archbishop of Fresh, Mighty Tusks, The Black Bolo Yeung, Tony Starks, Starky Love, Theodore Deini, etcetera.

These are all great gamertags

Wii U is a bad name, bad for marketing and bad for inspiring interest in gamers who were so put off by the Wii. the '3DS' was also a bad name IMO--too similar to 'DS' (doesn't help that the product itself looks almost the same). The 3DS is doing alright now after a weak launch, but a better name would probably help it stand out and sell even more units.

Nintendo needs to address their naming problem and rename the Wii U while they still can. Call it the "Nintendo HD", looks good on a shelf or in an AD, we can all just abbreviate it as the "NHD", everyone's happy, and we can move on and play some games.

It's (3ds) doing better than alright while naturally cannibalizing ds sales. What are you talking about?
