Slow news day at IGN. "Wii U: It's Time to Change the Name"

I hope Nintendo keeps the name just so everyone learns to deal with it. It couldn't have been that long until people finally accepted Wii, right?

And the thing is, you just know that the same sites would be spinning the name change as Nintendo doubting their own product.

Just call it Wii 2. It signifies that it's better than the first.

Wii U doesn't make any sense and sounds dumb as fuck.

Yeah, Wii 2 is the best course for them to take. They are able to keep the Wii brand without confusing people on whether its a completely new system. They need to make it look completely different from the original Wii as well.

I hate the name Wii U, I hope they change it.

edit-

Super Wii is decent but I'd prefer no Wii at all. (sounds like a tag in the making, so I'm mentioning that it sounds like a tag just to be safe)

How dare the entitled whiners at IGN question Nintendo's artistic right to give their console a stupid name.

You seem to be missing the point. Their stuff comes across like internet forum drivel, perfectly tuned to be as inflammatory as possible to drive ad clicks.

This isn't anything new, and I question why we should even given them clicks ourselves (slow news day on GAF?), but the outrage isn't at the message, but at the juvenile presentation of the content.

Super Wii would be the way to go if they had to keep 'Wii' in there.

and sorry, but theres really nothing wrong with that article headline. it would be time to change the name. after e3, theres no going back.

name is good as is, god. best protect ya neck.
bong bong.

At this point, it's been so far removed from the NES, Nintendo could start over and rename the next system the "Nintendo Entertainment System."

Wii was a dumb name then, and a dumb name now, despite the success. Wii U is equally dumb sounding.

Agreed. I think Nintendo needs to do something to differentiate the Wii U from the original Wii. Adding a cryptic U isn't enough. Wii 2 would make sense, but I'd rather see them ditch the Wii branding all together.

The thing is, the only people who really shit on Nintendo for choosing the "Wii" name are the core audience. These are exactly the folks who will whine their hearts out, but at the end of the day, don't really care about the name (at least, not in terms of dollars). They know what games are on the system, and they are going to buy it for those games, not because it does or does not have a cool name.

"Wii" obviously worked as a brand to attract a broader audience, and face it, they are the people for whom the name was designed. Not you or me.

I roll my eyes at these kinds of stories, but I can't really blame rich/audrey for it anymore. There just isn't enough Nintendo news to provide decent content daily.

Tuesday: TOP 10 REASONS WHY VITA SHOULD BE MORE LIKE A GAME BOY
Wednesday: 5 WAYS THE DREAMCAST LIVES ON THROUGH 3DS
Thursday: 7 UNANNOUNCED NEO GEO GAMES WE WISH WERE ON 360
Friday: 5 ZELDA GAMES THAT COULD BE MADE INTO FINAL FANTASY GAMES

Work done.

It's bad when I misread those as actual articles appearing on that site eh?

Its not like they are alone in this thinking. Many have said the name and looks of the console mimics the Wii too much. A lot of casuals might just see it as Wii update and I not sure that will work as well for them as other companies considering the Wii has saturated the market already.

I don't think Nintendo will change the Wii U name despite the negative effect it has had on the core gamer. Nintendo has to convince us why we should buy the Wii U and what we can expect and look forward to being able to do with it. Of course, this also includes lessons it has learned from the Wii and its fellow game companies.

So what if the name is stupid? People will care about the console if it's reasonably affordable with a consistent flow of compelling software support for core and non-gamers alike and a compotent online service to boot. Throw in some potentially exclusive hardware features and services (even after Sony and Microsoft release their respective next-gen systems) and you've got an awesome console with a silly name.
