So many space games

I'm still waiting for the return of Wing Commander style games. Story-heavy arcadey action with branching paths and adventure game elements (you get to walk around the carrier, talk to people, accept challenges etc between missions). Hopefully Squadron 42 fits the bill, but I don't see anything else following this paradigm on the horizon.

Don't really care for sandbox/procedural stuff and/or Elite-like games. Especially those using procedural generation.

Looking into this, I actually found it, liked it and then forgot about it. Any idea if it's going to be on Steam and how it's looking at the moment development-wise?

It's going slow. Like, it's already five years in development. I would say he will finally finish the game in two more years.

Dreadnought's one of those game that you NEED to play to really understand. Everyone I've shown it to doesn't get what's so good about it, and i was kinda the same way until i played it. But mannnn is it fun.

?? It isn't that hard to understand. It's World of Tanks with big spaceships.

You're in luck. Wings of Saint Nazaire, an X-Wing/Wing Commander-inspired arcade shooter with plans for "a lucas-arts style adventure" story campaign

I'm really looking forward to Squadron 42, since I was a big Wing Commander fan back when I was younger.
Went and bought a HOTAS set up in anticipation of No Man's Sky, Star Citizen, and Elite.

I still need to get one of these. I've got my eye on the Saitek X52 Pro. I wanna get one for my Pop on his birthday in April along with a copy of Elite: Dangerous, too.

He was a huge fan of Wing Commander: Privateer. I haven't played too much of Elite: Dangerous but it seems to be similar enough that he could really get into it.

Wow, just the way that game looks made me lean in closer to my monitor...

Just learned that one of my favorite game concepts from the last few years is still in development. Had an unsuccessful Kickstarter in 2014, I thought it had been cancelled

Flagship - A first-person RTS where you play from the bridge of a capital ship

I'm really happy because we hadn't seen any sort of space games for a decade with the odd one now and then. Personally my two favourite space games in general are EVE Online and the X series (particularly Terran Conflict & Albion Prelude, I've put thousands of hours into these games.)

Also some other games to look out for (some you can play already):

Limit Theory (kind of in the X series vein)
Shallow Space (RTS like Homeworld but now is also having a big redesign, the RTS remains but expanded heavily).
Deep Space Settlement (another cool RTS game in the works)
Starpoint Gemini Warlords (a new game by LGM Games, in the Starpoint Gemini universe but will have a lot of new features. I liked the previous two games a lot).

Yeah I am excited for this as well, there hasn't been a game since Star Trek: Bridge Commander that let you play from the bridge.

I still have some major issues with it - The
URV station building mission still is terrible

and with 20 hours post 4.0 patch I still haven't
Been able to craft the jumpdrive or the SETA which seems mandatory because there are no highways in Toride

I wanted this game to be good - but I certainly agree it scratches an itch - of the games posted what else would you consider - what else "scratches the itch" of a hardcore X3 player who was let down by Rebirth?

We pretty much have to wait for X4. Limit Theory has influences from the X series which will come out before X4 and I think it'll be a spiritual successor but do a lot of other new things as well. I think Rebirth is a fine game to pick up now but yeah it's no TC/AP. Egosoft is working on a new game, whether that's X4 who knows, if it is I'm sure they have learned from their mistake. I will support X4 day one when it comes out because even though Rebirth was a problem, I appreciate Egosoft's dedication to support its games and I've been playing their games so long and never been disappointed until Rebirth that I am willing to support them immediately again hoping they took away some lessons from its release.

Thanks, any idea if Steam early access has ever come up?

There's also Rogue System which is a crazy "realistic" spaceship operation simulator where all those flashy buttons on the console actually do work. Here's one third of them. And here's someone trying to play it
.

Artemis which is out for like 3 years now, pretty much does multi-person starship bridge simulation. Doesn't look super pretty though.

I haven't really played any space games since late 90's, or owned a flight stick for that matter. Can anyone recommend a game as a good entry point? I'm definitely going to pick up No Man's Sky but I'd prefer something I could play co-op with my buddy.

What's the best one to just relax in and explore planets and space in a spaceship on my own, without any multiplayer components?

A single-player story and campaign is an added bonus.

Starship Corporation is coming to Early Access next month
It's kind of a brilliant concept. You're in the spaceship market, establishing your business. You can construct all manner of ships, deck by deck, set up hulls, electrical wiring, etc. Then you stress test them in simulated scenarios and then place them on the market. There's a business sim side of sabotaging rivals, playing both sides of a galactic war, owning the market, but it's the simulation aspect that is genius. It allows the devs to cram in all manner of varied scenarios

Videos of some scenarios
Power failure
Medical emergency
Getting boarded
Mutiny
Attack by special forces
Minefield
Alien infestion (failure, success)
Collision
Magnetic storm
Drone attack

Wow, I thought I was mostly up on my space games, never even heard about this one. This is the best thread.

I played the trial of Starpoint Gemini on the XBO, and it was really good, looked gorgeous a decent played well, but was really let down by bad stuttering.

Anyone know if that will ever be fixed?

When it comes to games, the only thing I complain about is that there are too many good ones coming out and not enough time or money to enjoy them all

Considering NMS will have deep dark oceans with sea life and underwater caves, Subnautica might have a rival in the alien ocean department

So what game would you recommend a space noob such as myself?

I don't have tons of time to play but I have a mid range PC. GTX 960 and a I5 4590. 16 gigs of ram.

I was thinking of waiting for NMS..

Anyone here play Precursors? It was made either with the same engine as Boiling Point, or by the same company.

Apparently it was bizarre, hilarious, and buggy and fun. I've been wanting to play it for the past 6 years.

Indeed, it was bizarre, hilarious and buggy and fun. I liked Xenus 2 a tough more, but Precursors was pretty damn awesome. I wish the mod community had taken to them like they took to STALKER, because if ever there was an Eastern Bloc game crying out for overhauls, fixes and mods, it'd be Precursors.

See, this is what I want. Every time I get excited for a space game, it's multiplayer, or a genre I'm not that interested in (RTS).

Everspace looks so good. Can't wait to play it.

Hope someone ports Eve Valkyrie to HTC Vive shortly after launch. Only Oculus exclusive that I want for Vive. :(

Can't decide whether it's worth getting a Hotas or not. If the spiritual descent successor gets out of Kickstarter that might tip me over the edge.

It's funny to see people posting pics of what look like CH flightstick pros - I was testing flight sims with those 20 years ago - are they still around??

Thanks for posting this! This is right up my alley. I love management/sim type games.

I'm right there with you
It's one of the most exciting VR games for me and I might not be able to play it :(

As much as I am not currently on team Egosoft I will be a day one if X4 is announced. I pre-ordered Rebirth and remain unhappy with it - certainly partially my fault for what I wanted versus what we got. 4.0/HOL has let me down but I still have managed 27 hours in it - so while I can't recommend it I still am playing it o.0

I would also point out that all of egosofts games area bit of a mess at launch - X3 was constantly updated but had a tough initial launch (the campaign was very frustrating) - TC and AP were much better at launch - although I still had some issues with AP (but loved it to death)

I like egosofts (and the modding community) dedication to the games but worry about the current direction. Like many of the games I've played countless hours of - the bigger and better the community the longer I play.

I keep saying that Hotas is mostly the wrong control scheme for most space sims, and definitely the wrong one for something like Descent. In those cases what you want is dual joysticks or just a gamepad.

What a time to be alive!!

I honestly love how they're making a comeback.

I grew up with wing Commander and the tie fighter and x wing games so this makes me super excited!

I hope one day we get a proper mechwarrior game or equivalent. (This is what I am missing in my life)

Crud - seems like both games have totally vanished online. They're not on Steam, nor GOG. Gamersgate (a site I've never heard of) seems to have had them once upon a time, but no longer.

I played a bunch of Boiling Point about a decade ago now. Loved it, despite it's bugs.

You'll be happy to know one was Kickstarted by the Shadowrun guys last year. It's not too far off

Edit:
Oops, sorry, I'm talking about Mech Commander

Yeah I saw that I am super excited to see how they pull it off.

I loved playing Mech Commander too, anything in the battle tech universe will do for me.

Though nothing would top a full on Mech warrior title with a campaign mode. ( mechwarrior 2 was one of my first games I remember playing all the time as a kid)

I keep hoping for this. And it really needs to go with Mechwarrior 2's aesthetics. That music and voice acting is *perfect*. I never got into later MW games.

I think No Man's Sky is pretty much our safest bet right now. Sure, you can technically run into other players, but it's still pretty much a solitary adventure from what the previews have shown.

I'm enjoying a fairly new genre of space games, literal space simulation. Universe Sandbox 2 is fun in doses and devs have been pretty good on updates while in Early Access. Space Engine is just pure relaxing space exploration porn and somehow free. http://en.spaceengine.org

What about Elite Dangerous? I never play that in MP. That was my first space sim and it's totally playable wihout ever seeing or interacting with another person

Yep. MP in NMS doesn't sound bad, I just don't want a game designed around multiplayer (combat, trading, whatever). I want enough single player content to keep me interested.

Wait...single player? Shesh, I checked that game out and thought it was a MP only game. Now I need to read up on it more, thanks.

It's online because it's a peristent world affected by what players do (i.e prices on the trading market), but it's basically single player. There are missions to do, bounties to hunt down, etc.
The single player mode is the complete online version of the game. Except that you won't be put into the same instance with other players. So it is just you and NPCs

Back in the olden days I seemed to manage ok with a sidewinder joystick - twist rudder gave me roll control which was important. That was before dual stick controllers were a thing though, but I don't know if I could adapt to that.
