So many space games

Just going to take this opportunity to reminisce about warhead and millennium 2.2 on the Amiga. Such great games. Warhead had so much atmosphere - coming out of hyperspace to find a berserker (the big bad) was terrifying. Having to fight it by getting it to be pulled into a black hole was amazing.

I mean it's fine to like different things and I'm very happy Paradox is trying different things as well.
Even though Victoria 3 should have been next.
The fact that it's sci fi, I think that would Stellaris way different from EUIV. Sure, the general core concept is the same as they're 4Xs, but one is bound by history, the other isn't. That means stuff like uplifting and fallen empires and literally uncharted terrorizes with cilicazation you know nothing about. It should allow for depth and variety and strategy that could never be possible on EU's scale

Has anyone been following the development of Star Citizen closely that can give us a quick overview of the development progress?

Correct me if my information is incorrect here, I believe RSI released a social alpha late 2015 where you could fly around with friends and other players in a single solar system.

The wiki states that the single player component (Squadron 42) is due early 2016, with a full beta release of the multiplayer component late 2016.

Should being the key word here. I agree that the potential is there, but to bring it out you also need to add a lot more of the fluff around it. Even if you don't flesh it out too much 15th century England, Switzerland, Japan or Inca Empire tell pretty obvious (and different) stories based on what we know about history, their geographical position and neighbors.

Translating that experience into something that works with totally randomly generated alien races in a randomly generated galaxy is many many times more complex. You really need to make that pacifist space sponge feel different than a pacifist space mushroom.

This is also where I give great respect to Dwarf Fortress's crazy world history generation.

SC alpha 2.2 was just released, its basically a mini persistent universe in a single system where you can play with people and friends up to 24 players. Every month is suppose to have a large patch update with 2.3 coming end of this month
-includes seamless FPS/ship combat/zero G gameplay
-hostility system
-small handful of missions to take on
-multicrew ships

-shopping/customization for personal character coming 2.4 or 2.5

They are working on seamless space to planet gameplay like NMS which may get released end of year but no solid announcement yet

SQ42 is due end of 2016 which is most likely going to get pushed back to spring/summer 2017

OMG, I'm loving the fact that so many space games are being posted. Great to see Fractured Space and Strike Suit Zero mentioned too.

I have to give a shout out to Hyperspace Admirals - It's a FTL-esque game currently under development by the same guys who made the FTL: Captain's Edition mod. I so hope that they can pull this off..

Maybe they could have little hero units, lets call them science ships, flying around and uncovering new technologies while going on little adventures that sometimes uncover little pieces of lore.

They need to make Rome II next btw.

This seems like the place to ask this. Got any good recommendations on a HOTAS set up?I've only every used my father in law's once for his flight sim setup but this thread is inspiring me. I've got a vive preordered and just built my first PC about a month back so something good but decently priced would be nice for now. I see lot's of options but don't know if there is a hidden gem or something.

That could work, you just need to make sure there' enough events/lore/technologies to make the actual gameplay feel different from play to play. If they manage that then my hat off to them.

What would gaf recommend me to play when it comes to space games? I've never played before but thread with those awesome photos got me excited.

I think id love exploring planets the most.

I'm enjoying a fairly new genre of space games, literal space simulation. Universe Sandbox 2 is fun in doses and devs have been pretty good on updates while in Early Access. Space Engine is just pure relaxing space exploration porn and somehow free. http://en.spaceengine.org

I believe there is a Kickstarter for this, so if you feel like throwing this guy some money he could probably use it. He's been working on the project for a long time.

I love Rebel Galaxy, but it feels limited once you finish the story. Adding workshop support would be amazing for new ships and missions. Would help keep the game relevant until the inevitable(?) sequel.

He's at $40k atm.

At $80k
$80 000 - Single player space exploration game
Gameplay based on space flight simulation, space exploration, research and building
Realistic spaceflight physics with both hardcore fully manual controls and handy semi-automatic controls
Various spacecraft models
Build ships, space stations, and bases on planets
Collecting data about celestial objects using probes and satellites

Star Sector has been in development for years, hopefully they finish it up relatively soon and get a Steam release up.

Appreciate the comprehensive write up.

Should I upgrade my 300i fam?

I need something that plays like freelancer.

Check out Starpoint Gemini 2 (you can check out first but the second includes the campaign of the first in it as a free DLC called "Origins" with the benefit of the updated engine). Here's a pretty good review

I know it has perf problems on Xbox One when loading in a new area but on PC for me it's fine.

Also yeah Rebel Galaxy as Gattsu25 mentioned. Rebel Galaxy in terms of combat is quite different from Freelancer but the general way you play it is similar (story missions, some exploration/side stuff etc). Combat is on the same plane (which sounds weird for a space game) but it works really well with how the combat is broadside/positioning orientated etc. Also they licensed kick ass music that fits the awesome "space western/cowboy" sound/feel, similar in a way to Firefly captured.

Also since sites like spacesector and spacesimcentral have been mentioned I also highly recommend eXplorminate, it's all about strategy games (such as 4x or RTS) and as a result since a lot of space games are also in that genre, it's the best place to follow for space-related games such as those. They cover non-strategy games time to time too. They have podcasts outside of the written content as well and an active community.

You're in luck. Wings of Saint Nazaire, an X-Wing/Wing Commander-inspired arcade shooter with plans for "a lucas-arts style adventure" story campaign

Looks pretty good! Mentions of the adventure stuff are kinda scarce, though (I don't think it's on the official site). And the last update of any kind was way back when, so hopefully it does come out eventually. They mentioned crowdfunding, so I guess a Kickstarter is coming at some point? I'd definitely back the game!

And I'm not actually sure what they mean by "Lucas-arts style adventure". The Wing Commander games weren't really like that, it was a much lighter brand of adventure. Probably something like StarCraft 2 or Divinity: Dragon Commander, but occasionally more elaborate. For example, there was a guy in WCIII who challenged you to a simulator duel and you could refuse or accept and win or fail. Stuff like that. There were no puzzles, inventory or conversations with multiple reply choice, which would "Lucasarts style" would imply.

The main developer was working on his master's thesis, so that slowed development

Anyone tried Into the Stars yet? No thread and impressions seems to imply general disappointment.

It's...okay, I guess. Pretty gorgeous, but essentially a retread of Out There in UE4. Good mood, somber, classic risk/reward where death spirals are legion and winning elusive. I dunno. Not amazing, but if had on the cheap, offers a good afternoon's worth of space survival running.

Ship feels appropriately slow, too.

I want to replay Imperium Galactica 2, but not on iOS/Android and OG.com seems less that on the level.

I found it doesn't hold up terribly well, particularly the elements that made it super-amazing in the old days. That planetary RTS element? Good grief, it's rough - both in combat and building. Otherwise, a pretty and serviceable 4X. Certainly was my jam at the turn of the century.

Purchased Elite Dangerous in the recent Steam sale and Im having a blast, just parking the ships at stations is exhilarating enough to me, battles actually make my hands shake, finally found use for a HOTAS I purchased for Flight Simulator last year, Im already looking for my next fix though, so this thread comes just in time.

Talking space games, has anyone played Universe Sandbox 2? Any impressions of that? The roadmap for 2016 sounds awesome; they're working on a megastructure system that would let you design stuff like space elevators, Dyson spheres, and ring worlds.

I bought the original in a Steam Sale, it was pretty fun to see what happens when you put a black hole in our solar system. Got pretty boring after a while, though.

I dunno if the second is more game-y or simply an upgraded version of the original. Building those megastructures does sound pretty awesome.

What... what? Are they good? Are they like EV? Are they... better?
Never played Escape Velocity. Starsector is probably the furthest one along for that genre (VoidExpanse is okayish too).

Boss Constructor is really fun and updated like every other day, but it's still pretty early along, the developer seems like a nice guy though. No idea about Celestial Command, looks interesting though.

You know what I'd like to see, a sci-fi game with planetary explanation using the Skyrim/Fallout engine/gameplay. If it were a bit lighthearted (Han Soloesque) to differentiate it from Mass Effect I think it would be popular.

Looking forward to more Everspace details. Looks great.
They plugged another new game. Planet Nomads
Minecraft on another world.

Rough planetary RTS I remember. Empire at War can also be quite aggravating.

I still have an entire post/thread saved somewhere about 4X/RPG Strategic/Tactical balance. It's very hard to get right because something with too much depth can be too time consuming over an entire campaign and something too light just feels like a waste of time.

Is there something like Freelancer though? Loved that and Privateer. Elite or Gemini 2 or X don't quite hit that same note.

I just want to fly around, upgrade/buy new ship, trade and blow up stuff. A decent story would be a bonus.

Elite doesn't have enough to do and is a bit too tedious, X is bogged down by all kinds of crap and Gemini 2 is not quite that (good game though).

Rebel Galaxy perhaps.
