So, Polygon 'playing' Doom...

I guess that explains why at Polygon they're so fond of walking simulators: they're the only games they're capable of playing.

There are a lot of other tags there. A viewer could come to the video to see if any of those are represented in the way that they would like, as well.

Nope, just pointing out that other aspects exist. We are all already well aware that gameplay is a part of games, so it doesn't need mentioning.

It wasn't a review.

Its an impression tho.. :)

While I have no issue with people in general being bad at games, when your job revolves around reviewing video games there really needs to be a minimum standard of skill.

This isn't for some elitist comment, if a food critic doesn't know anything about food preparation or how food should be he would get his ass laughed out of the profession!

Someone that plays like that simply isn't qualified to properly analyse difficulty of the game, mechanics etc, it's just unprofessional.

Yeah, that's how I feel as well. I mean i would be totally clueless trying to play GT because the level of finesse needed I don't have neither do I have the knowledge ( car lingo ). So my opinion would be irrelevant.

not playing like a retard who just picked up a controller for the first time isn't "in-house marketing". it's called being able to properly show off game mechanics THAT THEY THEMSELVES ARE REVIEWING

Retard? Wow, you are really showing yourself in a positive light. Let me ask you something. Am I a retard also because I was a disabled game reviewer? Is anybody who doesn't play up to your requirements also a so called retard?

Exactly, if I was a reviewer I would steer clear of sports games/racers because I'm AWFUL at them.

The most I could write is a piece emphasising how I suck and whether someone who sucks at the genre would enjoy it. I wouldn't be able to comment on any detailed mechanics and if they work because I wouldn't recognise them properly in the first place.

Yeah, it's really not a Polygon specific thing. It's especially bad when it comes to racing games. This is from a video of someone at Gamespot playing GT6 at TGS

Seems like there might be a bit of input lag.

Edit: But even if that's not the case, this setup isn't really reflective of what most people will be experiencing at home. The person in the gif seems kind of frustrated/perplexed when letting go of the wheel at the end, probably because they aren't used to playing racing games with such a setup.

Saw this mentioned but haven't watched until now....

Holy hell this is terrible and should never have been published. I could understand being awkward for the first few minutes. I get that way when I haven't played FPS on a controller in a while; but this previewer didn't seem to learn anything over the course of the video.

I think this previewer has an actual learning block or is highly "medicated".

Wheel in third person mode is not very intuitive.

Yep, the "game journalist suck at actually playing video games" sentiment has been around for years, too. I'm trying to remember a GIF I saw of some platformer where the guy looked like he was intentionally jumping into pits. I think it was either Sonic Lost World or New Super Mario Bros?

Honestly if I didn't know any better either they're playing with severe input lag or are actually intoxicated. The slow reactions in the gif posted by OP seem to indicate either or.

Awful video - I cannot believe this was published from Polygon. I can absolutely understand this as a random person on YouTube as their first time but from a major website that reviews games? It’s just about unacceptable.

I believe this is what you're looking for?

Just sayin'.

What pisses me off about this particular video is that it was done to "highlight" how poor the game was, so the person INTENTIONALLY played badly to paint it in a bad light.

I don't think Lost World is a good game (I think it's quite bad), but it's a shitty video.

Welp the vid has 200k hits, pretty sure they'll appreciate the extra revenue... it was probably done on purpose so we can have a 30+ page discussion that gives them clicks

I still can not comprehend why the concept of wanting a game played by a semi-competent person is elitist.

If I was as bad at my job as the person playing this game, I'd get fired. If it's your job to be reviewing games, they you'd better be able to do basic shit like move and aim at the same time. Anyone arguing the contrary is deluded.

This is not a review, but I agree with you. The purpose of these "first impression" videos is to show people what the game is like and to help them make purchase decision. This video fails to show what the game is about and how well it plays. This is a bad video, and whoever made this did a poor job.

Eeesh...that's a poorly-chosen turn of phrase.

I legit would not get in a car with that guy driving. The amount he is over steering is ridiculous. Even if he was going 30mph the amount he is yanking that steering wheel around would put you into the curb.

I wouldn't want to be in the car while he has a tank slapper at 100+. But otherwise, that's probably not a fair comparison.

How long before Polygon says the video was intentionally done that way as an experiment to see the reaction it'd get.

If they do that, I know at least 3 presidential campaigns looking for people who can spin like that. They'd certainly be more qualified for that job than one that requires them to competently play video games.

My car can do 159 but I rarely break 100, as the penalties aren't worth the risk. Have been meaning to take it to a track or drag strip. Regardless, it makes no sense he is pulling that steering wheel back and forth like that. He isn't even dealing with shifting. If he drives a car in real life, I don't know why he would be doing that to the steering wheel.

In real life he would immediately take his foot off the accelerator, you would imagine, which would help get the thing under control. Because this is a game with no consequence, he's trying to keep his foot in and not lose momentum.

Congrats on the car, I guess?

Is that guy drunk? Jesus.

as someone who has had lot of experiences playing FPS drunk on consoles (MW1-3, BO, BO3, and especially Destiny,) the player is definitely not drunk. They would be getting stuck on objects/corners/doorways more and randomly nodding off when not under attack.

Yea. He is just playing the game wrong. GT is supposed to be a fairly realistic racing simulator. The dude is doing like 120km/h and cranking the wheel back and fourth, what do you expect would happen if you're doing that in real life? Notice he straightens out when he takes his hand off the wheel because the games simulated power steering corrects itself.

Well, that doesn't make sense either. There's a reason for the brake button in video games. You aren't supposed to just max the accelerator constantly, especially in a sim game.

And again, what he's doing to the steering wheel is ludicrous, and is obviously the very thing that results in his frustration.

When there's no danger, people drive differently with different priorities. I don't know how anyone could think that this is indicative of his IRL driving.

Still wouldn't get in a car with him ;)

Alas, I digress, doesn't have a lot to do with the thread so I'll drop it.

Do you typically drive your car in third person?

Did Kotaku report on this? Why are gaming outlets scared to shit on other gaming outlets. Now that's ethnics!

Because who wants another article on why Polygon sucks at everything they do?

"BREAKING NEWS VIDEO GAME JOURNALISTS ARE ACTUALLY SUPER BAD AT GAMES STARRING: POLYGON"

Plus this isn't new, in fact the OP's gif is nearly identical to the movement of early impression beta videos of Killzone 2 way back in the day, believe it was gametrailers as well.

Jeremy Clarkson did a bit on this in Top Gear. He had a couple of runs in GT4 Laguna Seca, then drove the exact same car (Honda NSX?) at the real Laguna Seca. His lap times in GT were about 15 seconds faster than real life because there was no fear of death.
