ugh... the more I play this on PC, the more I realize that my laptop specs are not up to the task, not only am I having low framerates, Im also having input lag because of my shitty generic usb controller... *sigh* might get it on PS3 when I have some extra funds...

This is beautiful. I hope a mod is released where Classic Sonic replaces Modern in every stage. It looks so damn fun!

I like how it looks (especially the rail grinding, lol), but it looks pretty boring to me. :( At least put the homing attack in.

Easy enough to get and would no doubt make Classic in modern stages play a whole lot better.

I like how they did what I saw suggested somewhere and replace trick rings/ramps with the normal versions. Should be able to use Classic on all stages now that someone has been able to do that (hitting a trick ring/ramp as classic in a modern level crashes the game as Classic Sonic has no trick animations so it tries to load things that aren't there and breaks the game or something).

Whats funny is that this is how I imagined Sonic X-treme would play back in the day...before having the ability to see any of the actual gameplay from it/ just seeing the screens and renders in a game mag.

Minus all the rail grinding of course.

Eh? I just said I like classic Sonic's design better. How am I part of the problem?

Modern gameplay isn't bad, but it becomes bad when you strip out the things it was designed for. It's like adding the boost to the older games, but in reverse.

Except, it's pretty damn hard to hit enemies without the homing attack in 3D gameplay. 2D gameplay though, yeah can't say I care for the homing attack there.

To be honest the Classic portions are much more fun with the homing attack.
Haven't unlocked it yet, but from my experience with the homing attack in Sonic 4, I find it a lot less fun and definitely less satisfying (another reason why I find that game extremely underwhelming). Enemies became no longer a threat and the bosses become too easy. Me thinks 2D gameplay and homing attack doesn't mix well, it just makes everything feel too easy

Personally, I hope Episode 2 will have the Homing Attack as a toggle option.

It's nothing like the homing attack from Sonic 4. Spamming it actually slows you down and thanks to the virtues of actual thought out level design and enemy placement, there's nowhere where you're just mashing it to reach the end of an enemy chain. Enemies do become less of a threat, but it's actually really nice for speeding through levels and hitting the top routes without removing all semblances of platforming. It'd be nice if S4:E2 follows that formula but DIMPS gonna DIMPS.

Hmm... I should give the Homing Attack a try in Generations then, maybe it'll change my mind about it. But, still :( at enemies becoming less of a threat.

DIMPS/Sega should design enemies that specifically counters the Homing Attack in S4:E2, oh and while they're at it, they seriously should make it so the Homing Attack doesn't work against bosses... seriously, those bosses were a joke (aside from Lost Labyrinth) in Episode 1.

When is that coming out again? 22nd? I hope someone grabs that and post their impressions. I'm really on the fence about that version. A part of me wants it because there's exclusive reimagined levels, but another part of me doesn't want it because Dimps' games hasn't impressed me at all lately. (And I'm VERY disappointed that the Genesis Act 1 levels aren't exactly reimagined, which is especially jarring in comparison to the PS3/360 game)

Beaten. But that particular site has scans, so... you know what to do.

Water Palace seems to have nods to Apotos, though.

Kinda busy marking right now so I can't translate bits and pieces of it. Er...

Graphics: 3/4 - (outstanding levels, characters and scenes, the game is just bathed in colour and looks great but not outstanding)
Multiplayer: 2/4 - (local VS mode and online mode guarantees fun times to be had with other players [but they don't list out what they had problems with here? ok.])
Length: 3/4 - (replayability is a big factor, they say, and the challenge modes lengthen the gameplay)
Fun/entertainment factor: 4/4 - (the game is so fast, and gets even better if you decide to challenge your own times and records)

Overall: 90/100.

Unfortunately, I can't make out the "negatives" at all. It's too blurry.

Good thing they're not going for Windmill Isle, the roster would have been waaay too first level-heavy.

Green Hill, Mushroom Hill, Emerald Coast, Radical Highway (Shadow's first level - honestly, why didn't they just do Metal Harbor), Tropical Resort.

UPDATE:
No more game breaking stuff so far on the PC version (thank God). You can jack the camera here and there as Modern Sonic though.

I'm not really sure what to think about about the 3DS' level selection.
I like the inclusion of Mushroom Hill, Casino Night and Radical Highway, but I'm kind of bummed out about Emerald Coast (I mean it's basically just Green Hill on a beach) and Tropical Resort (Really, any other level from Colours would have been good. Starlight Carnival or Aquarium Park would have been cool).

That one Sonic Rush level out of nowhere seems weird too since it's the only handheld game represented. It would have been nice to get another Sonic Unleashed level instead like Dragon Road.

To be fair, in the footage of Generations 3DS with Tropical Resort, Sonic appeared to be using the Red Burst Wisp which was exclusive to the DS version of Colours. It might take more nods from Colours DS than Colours Wii.

But yeah, the level selection is peculiar.

The game has been out for awhile now, so let's take a look back at this review.

Holy moly donut shop. This guy is the biggest nitpicker that's ever nitpicked. What's saddening is that there are people who are actually just like this guy and aren't totally trolling.

I like how he dies with Modern Sonic then complains about... character design? wtflol

And how did he even get those glitches? through all my playthroughs I've never encountered anything close to that... poor guy is just cursed I guess

He's probably doing it on purpose. That whole second part... :lol

And Amazon.co.jp has a partial soundtrack list up. Edit: And if anyone's wondering what the synopsis in Japanese text means, it's basically, "celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary by buying this lovely 3-disc collection consisting of a lot of music throughout the series remixed for Generations. This is a must-have for Sonic fans!"

【Disc 1】
・Title
・Green Hill Zone - Classic
・Green Hill Zone - Modern / Normal
・Green Hill Zone - Modern / High-Speed
・Chemical Plant Zone - Classic
・Chemical Plant Zone - Modern
・Sky Sanctuary Zone - Classic
・Sky Sanctuary Zone - Modern / Normal
・Sky Sanctuary Zone - Modern / High-Speed

【Disc 2】
・Mushroom Hill Zone - Classic
・Mushroom Hill Zone - Modern

【Disc 3】
・Stardust Speedway
・Round Clear
Do note that this is a partial soundtrack list. My only fear is that they'll stick all of the HD versions' music on one disc, the 3DS version's music on the second disc and the shared music on the third disc... :/

Also, for some reason, even though I completely finished it by myself earlier this year (I played it with a friend a few years ago and it was... :/) and I didn't want to play it again, I played Sonic 06 a little bit to at least get to Crisis City. I definitely think the Generations level design and the way it was handled overall in Generations is better than the 2006 version. But I guess that's to be expected.

This was a screenshot from August.

These are enemies infamous for bouncing away your attacks. Here Sonic's just boosting through a line of them. They should be the anti-boost enemies. Maybe you have to wait for them all to turn around or soomething, but... yeah, I doubt it.

Played the PS3 demo and this game is surprisingly impressive. Looks sensational in 3D mode, with very little crosstalk. I was never into Sonic, but I'm considering buying this.

Can't say the same about Rayman though. Looked pretty but gameplay is pretty boring.

Any impressions on the 3DS version? Interested in it, but don't want to be a half assed version.

Advanced 1, no. 2, yes. 3, no. Rush, yes. Etc.

Advance 2 let you pass through the game if you "held right", much in the same way that it introduced Cream as an overpowered beginner character. You weren't about to get any emeralds or good rankings that way, though.

I don't see the problem with Water Palace. Sunset Park would have been nice to represent the GG games (though at the same time the GBA titles/Music Plant was skipped over too), but overall at the cost of having a smaller level count/being made by DIMPS (that review gives me hope though) it's a lot more balanced than the HD version's was. 3 'classic', 4 'modern', with chances being the classic modern stages will have elements of older stages in in it.

Not yet, but a Spanish magazine review, as pointed out a few posts up, gave it a 90.

I'm sure a few of us will pick it up next week and post impressions.

Problem is: You don't win by holding right and boosting, you especially don't get a good rating. I think the main problem are people simply not understanding the Rush series.

I thought this review was going to be by our favourite Sonic fan.

The second video is the one you want to watch.

my favorite part of the review is where he talks about the start of the game and talks about how if someones game starts up with modern sonic, then they are a modern fayget.

finally finished the game! also, is getting a Perfect Clear not enough to get the "Can't Touch This" achievement?

No, you have to clear the boss without being hit by anything. Some people have lucked out and gotten it despite hitting the rubble, but usually that disqualifies you.

You can do it on normal, and the boss has a very predictable pattern. The hard part is avoiding the rubble (you can spam A to destroy a bunch of it with Classic Sonic), keeping up your ring count, and you won't know for sure you got it until the score tally, which from there you have to skip through the credits and reload the game to try again, so if you think you hit something, pause and hit Restart.

This is the video I watched right before getting it myself. If you pretty much do what Aura does in that video, you'll probably get it. Just be warned not to shoot Classic Sonic after you've landed a hit on the boss unless you have to, because Classic Sonic won't warp with you if you've shot him out, he instead takes 7-10 seconds to fly over to your new location on the map.

ah, I see, but Im playing on Steam and I've experienced it from previous games where I didn't get the achievement even though I met the condition. oh well, Its not a big deal, not really that into achievement collecting, I was just surprised that I got an S Rank so I assumed I will also get the achievement. Now, its time go Red Ring hunting!

It's a hard achievement to get on any platform. It caused me more frustration than anything else in the game, so you've definitely got the right idea to just ignore it and do other things.
