Sonic Generations |OT| What Sonic can learn from Sonic

I remember a while back (in this thread maybe?) that people didn't want a Community thread. I forgot the exact reason why since my memory is pretty shitty sometimes.

If anyone really wants to make a Community thread though, that'd be fantastic. I'll be there :D
I would probably need to avoid it for the same reason I avoid the Pokemon thread. Community thread in the case of Sonic and Pokemon just mean "furry softcore cartoon porn" and "pedophile softcore cartoon porn" respectively.

And when it's not that, it alternates to idiots combing through deviantart and the like looking for trolling material.

No thanks.

I think you overreacted, but admittedly I'm cracking down on the Pokemon thread more.

Yup. I wouldn't be wary of a community thread if this wasn't very likely to happen.

But this situation (stupid fanart + dumb fanfiction) is bound to happen. :/

Yeah, I can see all of that happening easily. It's a shame. So I guess the Community Thread is definitely out of the question. How do you guys think the IRC chat would fare? Would it be worth trying? No biggie if neither happens, there will always be a new Sonic game announcement eventually. lol

Yeah i dont think its really happened in the generations or colors threads, but it was about a weekly occurence in the Sonic 4 threads.

The 3DS version is an odd duck. The more I play it the more I find out about it and get into it. The main game is just so-so (as stated in my review), but then there's the 100 missions, the online multiplayer, the time attack rankings and now, I just realized yesterday about the play profile card under options. It's used in conjunction with streetpass, has your Mii as it's picture and allows you to make your own card with...

It's own background depending if you unlocked more people with profiles through online or streetpass.

How many years you've been a Sonic fan.

Your favorite Sonic game.

Your favorite Sonic character (who appears as a tiny artwork in the corner of the card.)

How much time you've played.

Number of rings you've collected

Number of missions you've been on.

Not to mention the cool unlockables like production artwork from previous Dimps games, HD 3-D models and 50, count'em 50 tunes. Also, you can play the music in a row and listen to it through headphones with the 3DS shut making it a portable soundtrack.

Forget the main game, the extras are where it's at.

picked this up pretty cheap last friday and quite enjoyed it. didn't like how many city-esque stages their were, considering the plethora of possible alternatives in the sonic back catalogue and the last boss was dire but overall, a pretty fun diversion.

Forget the main game, the extras are where it's at.

Yeah, but to get the extras, you have to play through the missions, and good luck unlocking those in even a vaguely timely manner unless you march everywhere every day with your 3DS. I've tried playing through Time Trials, and those just unlock more profile backgrounds so far.

I'd be up for it, but I usually get carried away and start concentrating on that rather than doing my actual work, lol.

It really is too bad we can't get a functional Sonic community thread going on GAF for dumb reasons, but I guess that's just the way the cookie crumbles. :/

...Though now that I think about it, most of these Sonic threads seem to function as Community Threads anyway. We end up talking about stuff that's completely unrelated to the game, but still Sonic-related regardless. I wasn't around for the Colours or Sonic 4 threads, but it seems like this is a common occurrence based on the Generations threads.

Homing attack.
And if you've played the 3DS version, BOOST as well! :lol

Yeah, the 3DS game seems like it was designed moreso for Streetpass options and on-the-go play rather than a simple sit-down-and-play game. The real meat is in the missions and online/VS mode.

The biggest problem I have with this aspect, however, is that it takes 5 play coins to unlock each mission. I didn't carry my 3DS around very much prior to playing Sonic Generations 3DS as the only games I had for it were Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, Pilotwings Resort and Ocarina of Time 3D. I didn't really have a lot of opportunities to accumulate a lot of Play Coins as a result, so... I'm stuck trying to accumulate Play Coins now. The per diem cap seems to be 10 coins, and I walk WAY longer than that every single day, so it kind of sucks. So that's two missions per day out of 100. :/

It's too bad I can just put all those BGMs and songs and more on my mp3 player (which can actually fit in my small school purse as opposed to my shopping purses) anyway... so I don't get much use out of the playlist, unfortunately. It's cool that it's there for people who don't have the option, though!

Like... right now I'm listening to... errr...
*sees Zero no Kiseki Super Arrange as playlist*
*switches to Sonic 1&2 OST playlist*

...The demo version of Aquatic Ruin Zone. Yep.

That sucks and it's something I hadn't noticed myself up until now because I had 300 unused coins accumilated.I was buying mission after mission along with some unlocks in the Shinobi game. I got up to just over 50 missions before I can out of cash.

Anyway, I'm also noticing just playing the game and playing online accumulates certain points that seem to unlock missions without having to play coins. I don't know exactly how that works though.

It'd be possible, but we'd have to lay down some hard rules, and get a mod to agree to short-ban people who ignore the OP. Somebody who we could always call on for this.

Probably restricting the posting of fan art (serious efforts shouldn't be punished, but like Sega1991 said, something to limit those that just skim Deviantart for troll material), blind mentions of "The Sonic Cycle" (mostly by people who don't know what it describes besides "Sonic games are bad"), and posting the Doomsday remix from Sonic Chronicles.

Okay, maybe not that last one. But the world would be better off for it.

It doesn't have to make the OP sound super-evil, instead list it in an honest way, "These jokes have been done a thousand times before you, trying them now just make you look stupid, so don't bother."

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Anyone play this game in a 3D TV?

It looks pretty swanky I admit but there's a problem with frame rate.

Happens to every big franchise, which is why we started getting community OTs for them in the first place. But yeah, Sonic threads in particular have always derailed on a regular basis. We'd need a strict "no fanart for any reason" rule for a Sonic community thread to really function long term.

But there is good fan art. The pony threads make a good habit of collecting it and showing it off, I'd hate to have to shut it all away because of a few trolls.

It is rendering two different frames at once, so it's taxing the console a lot more.

If you've got a really solid PC and the nVidia 3D TV adapter thing, you could play it in 3D on your TV as fast as your PC can handle.

The PC version is pretty slick in 3D as it still maintains a high framerate and a higher resolution (higher than the 2D resolution of the console game).

The extras in Sonic Generations 3DS have me really intrigued, I might pick it up sometime since I just got a 3ds over Black Friday.
Had as much fun with the PC version of Sonic Generations as I could on my laptop while home for the thanksgiving Holiday. My super underpowered laptop ran it well enough but crashes everytime I restore Green Hill Zone. Need to try it out again now that I have access to stronger computers again

That'd really bum me out if I couldn't gush about Vantoggle's amazing fanart every time I decide to go admire it.

The FiM thread is an interesting outlier on account of how the show generates an enormous amount of decent fanart on a daily basis, which is compiled at a number of different external sites anyway. And in turn, the thread revolves almost entirely around it and still gets the odd instance of creepy material.

For whatever reason the Sonic franchise in particular has a really terrible signal-to-noise ratio and consequently, a reputation. I just don't see it ending well.

But, y'know, maybe. I can think of a few decent fanfic authors despite that category's equally wretched average quality. But at least for the thread's initial week in Gaming, it really feels like a bad idea.

It does? I thought the points just went to your Profile Card. Hm. I'll have to check that out when I get home, then.

Yeah... for example in the Final Fantasy Community Thread, I think people are afraid of posting fanart in that thread because mods are going to be in that thread anyway (plus the OP of that thread states something like "No creepy fanart"). I'm not sure if the FF community can be as bad as the Sonic community when it comes to the fanart situation, though.

Good, firm guidelines might mitigate the chances for the thread to be constantly derailed by people who don't really post much in the Sonic threads in the first place and just want to troll.

I'm just afraid of what might happen when the thread has its first week in Gaming before moving over to Community.

And no creepy fanfiction...

There's a lot of GOOD stuff to talk about regarding Sonic, like the comics, the music (even though you made a very nice music appreciation thread a while ago), upcoming soundtracks, fan games, figures, discussion about past games/cancelled games, or if people want to come in and have a serious discussion regarding what games they should get into. It'd be nice to have a place to talk about that on GAF, rather than burying it in a huge megathread.

Speaking of the comics, I had the first 12 issues back in the 90's and haven't picked up a single issue since. Now I just became a subscriber again. How hard is it going to be for me to get caught up on what's been happening with Sonic and the freedom fighters since then? Am I going to be totally lost?

If you've only read the first twelve issues which are quite different and more lighthearted than the issues after it, my guess is that you have quite a bit of catching up to do (I know I have, and I stopped reading them a few years ago until now).

Luckily, they have the Archives and Legacy books available to those who want to catch up on the comics. They aren't updated completely to current issues, though (I think). They're available anywhere, but Amazon is your best bet.

It's worth a go I guess, as long as we can get mods to reliably check (whether they're enthusiastic enough, I don't know). The rumour threads often explode and last for way, way too long when new information isn't coming out.

just grabbed this on pc. even on a shitty resolution, say 1280 x whatever, there's weird framerate issues. looks amazing, tho, when it's actually running smooth.

i'm on a radeon 6490m

I came in two pages too late to declare I preferred all the Advance Sonic games to Rush. Customizing Emerl especially made Battle worth playing (until I realised that the AI will always block one of your special attacks, and never block the other. Every time they die, they swap which one they will and won't block. It's bizarre).

I stopped playing Generations when I got to the final boss. Gah.

This is how it works for the player, too. Every time you spawn, you can choose your special attack and what attack you want to block. So nothing too bizarre about that, really.

This is entirely true, and I haven't played the game in many a year. I guess I just figured it was odd to have a mechanic that allowed you to hit the opponent with the same attack without fail.

I don't know. I kind of flip flop when I'm thinking of this. I want it because there's lots of stuff to talk about, but then I'm afraid of what it'll turn into.

Anyone know if that Jun Senoue album is any good? I love albums of game composers doing their own thing.

Luckily it was money well spent on the Sonic CD 20th Anniversary album.

I don't know if you've been following them, but SupaGogoMan, the one who posted that Knuckles challenge video ("Later!"), also posted a few other videos, but runs commentary the whole way through with giant annotation boxes. They're funny as hell sometimes.

The latest one is using the mods to play Classic Sonic in Rooftop Run, and absolutely worth a watch. It's also another interesting example of Classic Sonic successfully clearly a level with only minor changes. (Although a few of the jumps look pretty tricky.)

I'm really conflicted now. Big Sonic fan, I liked Sonic Rush and Advance 1, but didnt like Advance 2,3, or Rush Adventure that much (Rush Adventure had some cool themes and stage ideas, but all the unlocking and text screens really messed things up for me).

I know the Classic stages are fun in G3DS, but if I liked Sonic Rush 1 and Advance 1, think i'd be ok with the Dreamcast era and beyond?

Modern Era's good. Mainly because they are re-using their Rush/Colors DS levels again. Dreamcast Era has to be re-done from the ground up of course and suffers because of it. The level layout seems flat and uninspired. This is especially true of Radical Highway which IMO, is the lowest point of the game.

From what I've seen, you'll like the Modern Era but not the Dreamcast era. The Dreamcast era is poorly designed in Generations 3DS, big Sonic fan or not.
