Sonic Generations |OT| What Sonic can learn from Sonic

Tomorrow at 12am I will go to the uncharted launch and grab Sonic. Cannot fucking wait. Yes UC3 I'll get that too.

Sonic Gaf has pretty much already decided this game will be great.
To be fair at this point is there any really major reason why we shouldn't? Those of us annoyed by physics in the demo that badly just pre-ordered the PC-version anyway.

Unless it's some people spouting GOTY, in which case yeah, that's really pushing it when we're in the same year of releases like Arkham City, Skyward Sword and Unchar
ha ha no Rayman Origins
.

Hmm after I beat generations and stuff I think I'll go buy Unleashed and finally play it. -.- I shruged it off cause of 06 and didn't even realize it played the way it did, and everyone was always like OMG SHITTY WAREHOG OMG SHITTY GAME. This is exactly why I stopped listening to others when it comes to things for the most part, don't know why I listened here.

Generations HD, daytime stages yeah. The QTEs kinda knock some fun factor off, but thats about it.

Most of the god damn game is werehog shit. Day stages were fun but they feel like 1/3 of the game due to the length of the werehog stages. Maybe that's why Unleashed is not well liked?

I think how much someone enjoys this game will largely depend on how much they enjoyed the other recent games.

If someone is hoping for this game to recapture that "magic" that the 90's games had(as the inclusion of 'Classic Sonic' might suggest), then they're likely setting themselves up for disappointment. But if they're one of those able to see past the flaws of Sonic Colors, Sonic 4, and Unleashed, they'll probably be able to enjoy 'Generations' as well.

Just beat the Classic Era
Death Egg Robot battle was...kind of disappointing =P
Tried the first stage of Adventure era as Modern and lost along the way. I need to start using the ring ability introduced in it. I completely forgot that sonic could do that XD
BTW for anyone who played both 360 and PS3 ver., which do you think is better? I have PS3 and haven't had any slowdowns but the Cutscenes' CGI looks a little 'rough'.

I'm actually playing through it right now. I've owned it on 360 for so long but never bothered to finish it because I hated the Werehog nonsense.

The Daytime stages are great. Colors in my opinion had better gameplay but the Daytime stages are great nonetheless. The Nighttime/Werehog stages were a chore to go through. They were long, tedious, and it didn't help that everytime you headed to battle, the same song would play. A good song on its own but its grating to hear after you take a few steps and head into the next battle, and the next, and the next, etc.

QTEs were annoying, but nothing too terrible.

Also, I'm at the last stage and (spoiler)
I was not expecting to control a Mecha comprised of ruins, Sega.

cool, good to know!

Ahh, I don't know if should get it on Steam or console...
Steam has it 20 dollars cheaper and frame rate is better (?). I'd go with that if you can.

I'm getting the PS3 version and I may double dip in support.

I thought these two were absolutely horrible and while I thought Colors was great, I'm not going to pretend it didn't have its big flaws like a weird ass jump, occasional trial-and-error or still having its 'automatic' sections.

Despite all that I still see myself getting way more mileage out of Generations than I've gotten out of anything from the series in other a decade, ignoring Colors. Though I guess my main issue with Unleashed (besides the typical complaints like werehog, coin collecting and the dumb-but-pretty hubworlds) was that the controls were atrocious in the daytime stages (and QTE's everywhere), something Generations based off the demo has almost completely fixed.

Guessing your issues with the modern stuff is that it still isn't really the proper translation into 3D Sonic should of had like Mario did? I mean I agree it's bizarre they still haven't really achieved that after 15 years, but I still enjoy this stuff for what it is... A weird hybrid between the 2D games, elements of Adventure and a racing game? Yeah, that sounds about right.

LOL, I had almost all the PC ports too! It was the only way I could get copies of certain games myself. :)

Is the Sonic Gaf contingent basically waiting out for the reviews or has it been established that this will be the best Sonic since, well, 2 or 3?
Sonic Colours got AWESOME! OUTSTANDING! AMAZING! CUBE! And Very High Reviews.

I think Sonic-GAF has decided it's going to be good regardless. Even though I don't really care about reviews, I think review scores might range between 6-8.5, so no big deal really.

Sciz said:
To be fair, all they have to do to make most of us happy is not botch the soundtrack.
Yep. If anything, Sonic games consistently have good soundtracks. (Sonic Chronicles music is not allowed in this thread.) I haven't heard most of the Sonic Generations soundtrack, but what I've heard is great so far.

Yeah Sonic 4 was far too stiff to be fun on multiple playthroughs imo. I could run through the daytime Unleashed stages all day though.

I've always thought of the Unleashed daytime stages/Colors gameplay as being kinda like a rhythm game. The challenge lies not in if you can get to the end of a stage, but in how you get there utilizing memorization and quirky tricks to tally up the highest grade possible. This is really where the bulk of the fun comes from, at least for me. It seems to take more of a cue from Nights(Saturn) than it does the Genesis games.

I'm probably one of the few who really liked Sonic 4. I've hated every Sonic since Adventure (never played Colors).

I'm in the same boat as Dark Schala. I've been dying to read the spoiler tagged stuff you guys have been posting.

Only one more day, then ... then I pick it up.

So I called my local Gamestop to see if I could get Sonic Generations at midnight tomorrow. They basically said sure and only because they were doing a midnight release for Uncharted 3 and they both come out the same day.

Thank you Nathan Drake!

Make no doubt, the warehog stages are probably a lot worse than you're thinking but the daytime stages are amazing, if a tad glitchy. If you're getting it on the Wii or PS3 I HIGHLY reccommend you download a complete save file and just play the day time missions through there.

I did that for a second playthrough and it really shows how amazing Unleashed could have been with half a game. You'll be saving yourself a lot of heartache and time.

Sucks that the PC is still scheduled for the 4th. With digital distribution, why couldnt we just get it on the first like everyone else?

Europe release date is the 4th. The PC version is probably being handled by SEGA Europe alone. Would explain why it's the 4th instead of the 1st.

I am really torn. I wish I trusted Sega to do a proper PC version, but I don't trust them. Not sure if I should get the console version or pc version.....

That...actually could happen I guess. I know thats how it used to be, but recently we've been selling whatever shares the major midnight launch title's release date (selling Dark Souls the launch for NBA 2K12 and so on).

So to kill time before generations arrives I decided that I would have a quick re-run through Sonic Heroes, now i've never really disliked Heroes, I consider it in the same league as the two adventure games at least but due to the negative reputation that follows it around I figured that taking another look at the game was in order to see how it holds up.

Opening: Already from the get go we've got the awesome cheese that is the Sonic Heroes theme, yes you heard me correctly, i'll take it over "Open your heart" and "Live and Learn" even with the dodgy lyrics galore. If I took anything from the opening it's that Metal Sonic got given a lanky make over and dodgy cape/skirt accessory, makes the dreaded green eyes not seem so bad now right?

Team Sonic: It sure is nice of Eggman to issue such a formal challenge to Sonic via a classy electronic...paper...invitation? well whatever it is it looks spiffy, but why does he refer to the group as Sonic Heroes in his letter? I can only assume Tails lets the tornado crash into the nearby cliffs since he and Knuckles just kind of jump out the seats to join Sonic run through a barren wasteland, how careless. Maybe Eggman shouldn't have told anyone that he was going to conquer the world in three days but he's the evil genius after all so i'll let it slide.

Seaside Hill: My first thought is that Tails voice in this game is absolutely horrific, anyone who dares complain about current Tails should be forced to listen to an hour of heroes Tails scream "wooooow my head is spinning!".
The pace is pretty damn fast even when you switch characters, this is basically a tutorial stage so no real dangers. For some reason there are those kart sections which come with a time trial timer for some reason, considering the kart shoots off by itself and crashes through any obstacles it seems kind of redundant. Facing eggman robots is kind of fun if you are powered up but at first it's bloody annoying that your bog standard enemy doesn't fall in one homing attack when you lack the level up bonuses, oddly enough the homing attack can get confused leading Sonic to spin in orbit around an enemy leaving it up to the gaming gods to decide your fate, fortunately I wasn't flung into the ocean. Knuckles screams "SHIT" every time he throws a punch, how did you let this through Sega?
Finished up with my A rank leading to Sonic remarking "that was TIGHT!", why yes it was now stop doing that ridiculous pose you tool, really it's a bad victory pose.

Ocean Palace: Best music in heroes right here, Tails tries to warn me of falling rocks seconds after I get crushed under a falling rock, he isn't gaining my support at all. Triangle Dive allows the trio to hold hands like the super friends they are and somehow catch enough air in their furry chests to soar off from giant fans, why they have to hold hands in a circle formation to do this I don't know, at least Big and Vector's variations make a little sense (parasol and super bubblegum respectively). Knuckles delivers the standout line of the day "SHAA!" which is apparently the sound echidnas make when being flung off boost pads. The level is pretty fun, you've got a bunch of block platform carrying turtles and a chase section with spiky rolling rocks of doom (can be described as a party courtesy of Knuckles, this guy cracks me up), probably my favourite stage so I guess it's all downhill from here.

Boss- Egg Hawk: Well this is awkward, you basically spam the homing attack at first causing Sonic to enter this odd flailing variety of the move and then you just punch the crap out of the Egg Hawk with Knux, Tails does nothing because he's slow and useless but you already knew that.

Metropolis: Sonic's first mention of the superpower of teamwork, he also makes some very odd arm waving animations whilst saying this. Not much to say about this stage, Sonic has some tricks up his sleeve such as the sonic tornado, remover of enemy shields and allows you to spin up poles. He can also ping across adjacent walls like a ninja, actually that's Espio's bit, he even clings to the walls sticky style, sorry Sonic you've been one upped.
Dialogue moment: *heading down an empty straight path*
Knuckles: we're not going THERE are we?!
Sonic: Yes we are!
Not like there's any other route Knuckles, still i'm happier with odd comments from him than hearing Tails speak.

Power Plant: The game was actually going quite well, so I guess I had to suffer sooner or lately. The power plant is kind of lame, an emphasis on using Tails flying power and projectile lob makes this a pretty slow affair, throw in 2 slow moving lift sections on top of that and you've got a boring concoction. The stage finale is an awkwardly viewed sequence where you have to escape from rising energy fluid that cost me my first life so far (and another 2 for that matter) so no A rank for me and no "that was TIGHT", guess that makes things loose.

Boss- Team Rose: The brief setup for the fight is Amy claiming that this time there's no way Sonic can escape from marriage, not that I see any way for her to force our hero into such things right now but the response is to punch her off a roof, which is of course the correct response. That said I couldn't help but feel bad as I started off homing attacking poor little Cream, she went flying off into the background swiftly and into the abyss, damn it she's just a kid! Finished up with a three on one beat down on Big the Cat for tainting Sonic Adventure with his fun destroying fishing stages.

So that's about a 2/5 of the game done, delightful! It's been decent so far, but how much longer will it stay this way?

Casino Park through Bullet Station are the four worst sequential stages in series history, ignoring '06.

Which is to say it's going to drop off a cliff immediately and stay there, with a minor upswing around Hang Castle.

edit: And Hang Castle really only gets by on style points.

I personally enjoyed the canyon base stages all those years ago, but I'd have to play them again to see how they hold up. But Casino Park and fucking BINGO Highway are total crapshoots.

I remember enjoying Bingo Highway, the rail canyon/bullet station stages on the other hand aren't something i'm looking forward to. I could have sworn that Hang Castle and the Mansion were stages to fear but I may just be thinking of the Chaotix versions of the stages being the worst in the game.
Egg Fleet is good stuff and one of the 2 levels in the game that require sonic's team boost move, makes me wonder why they even put the move in the game.

I remember liking Casino Park. Bingo Highway's kind of clever too, the problem is your controls on those tables are awful. Doesn't matter too much on Casino Park, and as long as one of your characters makes it through the paths on Bingo Highway, they're fine.

I didn't like Casino Park simply because I would keep getting stuck on the pinball machines (especially with Big).

Besides that, Sonic Heroes is a pretty fun game.

Better than 06.

and way better than Colors

Did you not see his LTTP: Sonic 2006 thread? (I think you have, actually, but oh well.) He's enjoying it so far, but hasn't touched the Shadow or Silver levels yet.

I'm extremely worried for his sanity for even enjoying the Sonic levels...

Take no offense from this Anth0ny but I'm just surprised anyone can endure Sonic 06 so well.

I really should stop pre-emptively spoiling modern Sonic game soundtracks for myself sometimes, but good sweet Jesus, this soundtrack is like the best since Colors which was the best since Sonic 3+K. So many subtle nods... So much aural awesome.

According to The Sonic Stadium, Tropical Resort is the Sonic Colours stage revealed for Sonic Generations 3DS. Apparently, the screenshots Nintendo Power has in its latest issue shows that the Tropical Resort level takes visual cues from the Wii version of the game, not the DS version. Edit: Apparently the Wisp powers mentioned in the article are "red Wisp causing fiery explosions and cyan Wisp for Laser".

To recap, the six stages known for the 3DS version of Sonic Generations 3DS are: Green Hill Zone, Casino Night Zone, Mushroom Hill Zone, Emerald Coast, Radical Highway, and now Tropical Resort. There is one more stage yet to be revealed for that version of the game.

Edit: Oh yeah, people were asking for how the X360 version avatar costume preorder bonuses would look? The US is only getting the Super Sonic one, but here's a pic with three of the costumes that The Hut in Europe is offering for X360 preorders.

ifkKS.jpg

The Hut is also offering a preorder bonus for those who are purchasing the PS3 version of the game as well: a PS3 Dynamic Theme. (Apparently, US/Canadian PS3 owners will get this as well if they preorder from GameStop.) Screenshots:

Damnit, if that theme is reasonably animated I'm going to be pretty tempted to buy it (assuming they sell it on PSN).

Why can't we get nice things like that as bonuses in North America :(
