So to kill time before generations arrives I decided that I would have a quick re-run through Sonic Heroes, now i've never really disliked Heroes, I consider it in the same league as the two adventure games at least but due to the negative reputation that follows it around I figured that taking another look at the game was in order to see how it holds up.
Opening: Already from the get go we've got the awesome cheese that is the Sonic Heroes theme, yes you heard me correctly, i'll take it over "Open your heart" and "Live and Learn" even with the dodgy lyrics galore. If I took anything from the opening it's that Metal Sonic got given a lanky make over and dodgy cape/skirt accessory, makes the dreaded green eyes not seem so bad now right?
Team Sonic: It sure is nice of Eggman to issue such a formal challenge to Sonic via a classy electronic...paper...invitation? well whatever it is it looks spiffy, but why does he refer to the group as Sonic Heroes in his letter? I can only assume Tails lets the tornado crash into the nearby cliffs since he and Knuckles just kind of jump out the seats to join Sonic run through a barren wasteland, how careless. Maybe Eggman shouldn't have told anyone that he was going to conquer the world in three days but he's the evil genius after all so i'll let it slide.
Seaside Hill: My first thought is that Tails voice in this game is absolutely horrific, anyone who dares complain about current Tails should be forced to listen to an hour of heroes Tails scream "wooooow my head is spinning!".
The pace is pretty damn fast even when you switch characters, this is basically a tutorial stage so no real dangers. For some reason there are those kart sections which come with a time trial timer for some reason, considering the kart shoots off by itself and crashes through any obstacles it seems kind of redundant. Facing eggman robots is kind of fun if you are powered up but at first it's bloody annoying that your bog standard enemy doesn't fall in one homing attack when you lack the level up bonuses, oddly enough the homing attack can get confused leading Sonic to spin in orbit around an enemy leaving it up to the gaming gods to decide your fate, fortunately I wasn't flung into the ocean. Knuckles screams "SHIT" every time he throws a punch, how did you let this through Sega?
Finished up with my A rank leading to Sonic remarking "that was TIGHT!", why yes it was now stop doing that ridiculous pose you tool, really it's a bad victory pose.
Ocean Palace: Best music in heroes right here, Tails tries to warn me of falling rocks seconds after I get crushed under a falling rock, he isn't gaining my support at all. Triangle Dive allows the trio to hold hands like the super friends they are and somehow catch enough air in their furry chests to soar off from giant fans, why they have to hold hands in a circle formation to do this I don't know, at least Big and Vector's variations make a little sense (parasol and super bubblegum respectively). Knuckles delivers the standout line of the day "SHAA!" which is apparently the sound echidnas make when being flung off boost pads. The level is pretty fun, you've got a bunch of block platform carrying turtles and a chase section with spiky rolling rocks of doom (can be described as a party courtesy of Knuckles, this guy cracks me up), probably my favourite stage so I guess it's all downhill from here.
Boss- Egg Hawk: Well this is awkward, you basically spam the homing attack at first causing Sonic to enter this odd flailing variety of the move and then you just punch the crap out of the Egg Hawk with Knux, Tails does nothing because he's slow and useless but you already knew that.
Metropolis: Sonic's first mention of the superpower of teamwork, he also makes some very odd arm waving animations whilst saying this. Not much to say about this stage, Sonic has some tricks up his sleeve such as the sonic tornado, remover of enemy shields and allows you to spin up poles. He can also ping across adjacent walls like a ninja, actually that's Espio's bit, he even clings to the walls sticky style, sorry Sonic you've been one upped.
Dialogue moment: *heading down an empty straight path*
Knuckles: we're not going THERE are we?!
Sonic: Yes we are!
Not like there's any other route Knuckles, still i'm happier with odd comments from him than hearing Tails speak.
Power Plant: The game was actually going quite well, so I guess I had to suffer sooner or lately. The power plant is kind of lame, an emphasis on using Tails flying power and projectile lob makes this a pretty slow affair, throw in 2 slow moving lift sections on top of that and you've got a boring concoction. The stage finale is an awkwardly viewed sequence where you have to escape from rising energy fluid that cost me my first life so far (and another 2 for that matter) so no A rank for me and no "that was TIGHT", guess that makes things loose.
Boss- Team Rose: The brief setup for the fight is Amy claiming that this time there's no way Sonic can escape from marriage, not that I see any way for her to force our hero into such things right now but the response is to punch her off a roof, which is of course the correct response. That said I couldn't help but feel bad as I started off homing attacking poor little Cream, she went flying off into the background swiftly and into the abyss, damn it she's just a kid! Finished up with a three on one beat down on Big the Cat for tainting Sonic Adventure with his fun destroying fishing stages.
So that's about a 2/5 of the game done, delightful! It's been decent so far, but how much longer will it stay this way?
