Unless it's in a mission, which could be possible, there's no specific town area at the end of Classic or Modern's stage. However, it does become dawn as you play through Modern Sonic's level, and there is a recreation of "Going Down" even with remixed music.
way too much. In fact there's a segment dependent on it that I was stuck at for a few minutes, it didn't help there's a missile launcher right in the most dickish place it could be. They also didn't tell me until later on in the stage that
spindashing worked on the gears, not just the walls
.
I guess it's kind of hard to think that I'm playing technically the last main level, that it should be this hard when it's Planet Wisp. Screws with your nostalgia a bit, even though it's a recent game.
Edit: They just made Classic Sonic give the thumbs up to Modern Sonic doing a homing attack in a cinema. Bleh. So far the writing really isn't up to Colors, at least for Modern Sonic saving people.
(Modern Era boss) was an interesting fight, but unfortunately it didn't control well. Easily the most challenging one so far, though, but at the same time they kept throwing rings at you like Sonic Advance 2 did.
So I picked up Generations, and it's pretty cool and all, but I have something much more important to post.
So, a while back I posted a link to a certain video my friend made here (I think it was here at least) and on Something Awful. It seemed that people liked it and it spread around. One day I came across Tomoya Ohtani's twitter and thought... What would the creator of the very Pumpkin Hill song itself think about the video?
So, I made an account on Twitter and tweeted a link to it along with "Happy Halloween, Ohtani-san!" in Japanese.
From my admittedly mediocre knowledge of Japanese, it seems he thought it was spam since I had no followers or people I followed (not to mention that was my only tweet), and
decided against clicking the link since he presumably assumed it was a virus or something. A little back and forth between him and a couple of his followers confirms that he skipped over clicking it (they did too, apparently)
Sonic and Sega Allstars Racing was far cheaper than the console versions but it had its multiplayer stripped out. Near as I can tell Generations isn't missing any features, but I'd prefer not to get a surprise when it comes out. Still they went to the trouble of giving it all the Steamworks bells and whistles, so here's hoping it isn't a halfassed port.
...The final boss is really hard to figure out by yourself. I'm not entirely clear
which mode is best for what, I think I'm supposed to gather rings and close in in 2D mode, then switch to 3D mode and attack? There's something with Classic Sonic being used like Eggman in Sonic Advance 3...
but I'm really having no luck so far. Back to it I guess.
Edit: I guess I got it. I pretty much never had to use
Oh shit, I just learned that the game comes dubbed in spanish (and in other languages of the european countries).
That means a fucking high quality dub, and our sonic voice (and tails) has been always the same since the 90's, so he is very similar to the voice of Jaleel White, instead of the shitty voice they use now for the american dub.
Even modern sonic doesnt sound cool or shit when he (Rafael Alonso) does the voice (in sonic X for example).
Also Robotnick has a really awesome voice. The onyl problem of Robotnick is that at first he was the one that did Homer Simpson's voice, and he was FANTASTIC, but he died some years ago. Although the new voice is really good.
Just have to wait 3 more days for the PC version. Lets see how it is.
Sonic Generations is, quite simply, the greatest Sonic game ever produced. Regardless of whether that statement still holds any relevance today, this game is a triumphant victory for Sonic Team and for the blue hedgehog himself. Stand proud Sonic, you deserve it. 9.5
Okay, the expected thing for getting all 7 emeralds and beating the game,
the Super Sonic skill requires you have every other skill unequiped, it takes the maximum 100 skill points. It's pretty uninteresting for Classic Sonic. You get the ability to plow through things like rocks on touch, but he doesn't move that much faster, or jump that much higher, and there's not really a satisfying noise or music change when you transform, although I heard that's in the options? I'll check later.
Modern Super Sonic is different. He's similar in a sense, but his boost can sort of fly, at the very least laterally. The downside is that it eats through rings at an incredible rate when you do this, and it replaces your existing boost, so if you're going for any sense of urgency, you're going to transform back to normal pretty quick.
Classic Super Sonic and I presume Modern Super Sonic get unique tally screen win poses if you hit the goal while transformed.
Okay, so the main story is completed. There are still tons of Red Star Rings to find, about 40 missions left to do (and missions, while some recycle familiar areas, others use more unique locations, or alternate routes you saw playing the stage but couldn't reach). Here are a couple things that struck me...
+A lot of the stages, the early ones in particular, are really good. I won't say they're all perfect, it's not an even balance of quality throughout like Colors, but there are some parts here that are better than pretty much anything in Colors.
+Modern Sky Sanctuary is pretty close to the blueprint they need to follow for the next 3D Sonic game. There's something about the way they structured it that stands above the other 3D content in the game.
+Bosses and Rival fights are, for the most part, excellent. They're not quite as easy as you may first think, and are much more complex than the average Genesis boss battle. It's too bad
Egg Dragoon
's has some weird control issues, because it probably lasts the longest and has the most going on. It's nice that all the bosses also have a Hard Mode, even the very last one.
+The animation is great, although
Classic Eggman
's modeling was a little weird. Classic Sonic and even Classic Tails really steal the show. The enemies also have a lot of cartoony animations, which help broadcast their attacks properly.
+The fanservice is crazy. Yeah, there's some things missing, but they also went out of their way to add the things you remember about the originals, including music changes during specific sequences, key landmarks, etc. And they also snuck in a lot of aspects of Genesis levels that didn't make the cut.
+The music is so good. There's so much of it, it's used well, you already know this because you've been listening to Youtube rips, but it's even better matched to the scenes or gameplay.
+The pit warning signs are nice, so much so that the few times they didn't show up for a smaller pit caught me offguard. Sure, it's a little hamfisted, but it's highly preferable to know that that way contains death, and not delicious candy.
And some downsides...
-The level choices screw with your head a bit. It's hard to think of Planet Wisp as a final stage, so the difficulty feels weirdly out of place. It's also a bad place for them to use
the wisps
so heavily.
-A couple of the levels could do with more polishing. I get the feeling Seaside Hill was one of the last levels they worked on for a number of reasons. Modern Crisis City needed to be perfect, and it's not.
-There should have been a final original (or really out there) level before the last boss.
-The last boss was... not particularly good. It's not explained well, the extras are shouting different things every three seconds, and I A ranked it (and would've S-ranked it if I hadn't ran out of rings once) by just
boosting up against it
. That's really pretty much it, there's just a little
NiGHTS Wizeman-like
moment, and then you do some damage. There's also way too much visual noise in the way, with the camera too zoomed out in
2D Mode
.
-The only character who comes close to getting the Colors tier of writing is Eggman, who gets a few vaguely amusing comments. The talky Sonic is very bland, and while the text dialogue is ok, most of the spoken dialogue really is generic, to the point of being annoying. Pretty much every character repeats variations of the same two or three bits of advice through the entire final boss fight.
-No
Classic Amy? Why leave her out?
(character-related)
-I feel like the Skills should've been left out. Hell, I ended up not using them the entire game by accident. You can do that of course, but if you're fine without them, then the temptation to get free bonuses is too high, and the game didn't really need them.
-Lightspeed Dash doesn't work except on appointed ring lines, and at least in the main stages there are very few of those. It feels completely pointless to include.
-Some of the "Friend" missions get a little too out-there and gimmicky. Trying to tap Y so Blaze can put out flame columns while you're jumping over pits is a bit rough. And why is Amy
flying with her hammer?
The worst one I've played so far is the Vector versus battle, I won't play that one again if I can help it.
This is a game that's excellent in many spots, but I'm torn on whether I'd say it's as consistently good as Colors was. Because of the level choices, the difficulty feels strange sometimes, and it's hard to figure out whether the game's being cheap, or if you're just not accounting for this being the last or next-to-last level and it's always been like this. Visually it's beautiful, the audio is wonderful, the gameplay is generally very good to excellent, the dialogue is gag-worthy... somehow it feels just a little too short, but not by much.
Gamestop hasn't called me, I've realized. But, my gamestop did show up as one of the gamestops doing a midnight release for Uncharted 3/Sonic Generations. I'd call them right now but I'm in class.

Edit: Checking the site, my store shows up with Generations "In Stock" so I should be all good.
Are there elemental shields in this game?
I know people found them in the first demo that was released, but I haven't seen them in any recent gameplay videos.
That's how the GameStop I live by is, part of the reason I just didn't bother with them. Got a good deal on Amazon. I'll be surprised if SEGA doesn't put up the DLC / theme up for sale one day. I don't care either way, though.
Is there any official word on whether or not the PC version will get the eventual DLC? After Mirror's Edge PC got screwed out of DLC I've always been paranoid about this.
The hub and the way the music changes is pretty cool. Its laid out like a sorta mini stage. Also apparently Sonic falling on the ground after getting hit can be fixed with a skill. Not sure why they didnt just make that default though.
Chemical plant classic was pretty fun. Modern was sorta insane at times but only in how much visual stuff is happening. I know I missed some alternate areas on both ends though, since there are hidden/fake walls in classic, and I saw the ends of ziplines and rails/ramps I missed in modern.

Its nice that you can change the default music for stages, but since alot of the challenges already use the other remixes/default versions of the various songs throughout the Sonic series, think you'll hear everything without changing music?
Sup guys, I've just bought this game during my launch break (in fact I paid for it less than 15 minutes ago) and I have a question. How many acts exactly does each stage have ? Is it only 2 acts per stage (1 classic and 1 modern) or there's more ?

I'm just at Sky Sanctuary of course, but from what i've seen, played, and heard, its great.
Classic Sonic in Sky Sanctuary makes you remember the days when you kinda had to take your time through stages/ you werent worried about S ranks lol. Should definitely take a decent amount of time to get all red rings, chaos emeralds, and S rank everything.
Regarding the preorder DLC... I guess it's because the manager I know well got transferred but for once at the EB I go to, I had to remind them to give me my preorder bonus for both Uncharted 3 and Sonic Generations.
I'm not mad. I'm just a little surprised. But I noted that the clerk was new and was trying to get a handle on things anyway. What's nice, though, is that I got the call for Sonic Generations rather than Uncharted 3, lol. I am, however, ticked off with GameStop.ca for not shipping my Fate/Extra LE yet!
Can't wait to go home for my lunch break and play Sonic Generations until my analytical chem lecture. Yaaaaay~
...Oh, fuck. I knew I was forgetting something when I picked up my copy an hour or two ago. Oh well, doubt I was going to play the pinball table much, anyway.
lol yeah i'll jump into Uncharted 3 later when I have some time to really get into it. That and after going through Rage, Dead Island, and Gears...I need something like this and Kirby to balancing off shooting/slashing.
The preorder bonuses SHOULD auto print on your receipt, but if they are handing them out on passes, the store might not have received a shipment. For some reason, not every Gamestop gets shipped the same stuff. Probably has something to do with the assumed demographic for the store.
The 3D platforming in Sky Sanctuary takes some getting used to, but it works. You really REALLY shouldnt boost everywhere in Chemical Planet M or Sky Sanctuary M. Its more along the lines of the take your time 3D platforming from Sonic Adventure 1, mixed with some Unleashed/Colors elements. Really makes you feel like you're missing alot of stuff when you dont know the level layout, and arent just trying to find the faster way through.
EDIT: Anyone heard any news on PC reviews?
From Palgn:

I dunno about the greatest, but I will say its something Sonic Team should be proud of. It is a great game all around.
Ha, the site I review for hasn't heard back from Sega regarding a PC version for review. Figures, they told us we'd get a review copy of Conduit 2 earlier this year, too, and we never received one lol
