Went into GameStop today to pay my Skyrim reserve. I asked the manager about this game and he's a huge Sonic fan. He even hooked me up with all of the preorder DLC!
I've got some games on the way to Amazon for trade-in, I think I'll pick up a copy of this as soon as I receive the credit.
Edit: Oh shit, didn't realize that Amazon had had this for $37.50! Who did they price match?! Just placed my order!
Probably my biggest fear about the PC version at this point. Even a 60fps cap would be disappointing to me, but I could live with it.
The original time-limited demo on 360 really messed up my eyes. The sidescrolling, framerate, and how 'busy' the game was visually made it hard to even look at in motion. The new demo runs smoother, but I still based my purchase of the PC version on the hope that I'd be able to run it at 60+ fps.
After playing Colors like crazy the past few days, it's going to take a bit before I get used to Modern Sonic again. I'm glad I didn't listen to all those music tracks... I'm so blown away right now.
any UK people ordered from GAME here? I've got an email from them today which looks like its basically confirming I've preordered it (which I did like 5 months ago), but on their site its still unshipped. Is that the same for everyone?
Ive ordered the special edition with casino zone DLC, theme and avatar costume, (not the limited edition with all the stuff for like 70 quid).
Would like to pick this up, but waiting a few days to see how the PC port turns out before deciding PC/360/PS3. Glad the prices are pretty fair all around.
It's actually a much easier boss by comparison, laughably so. But no, i've had my fill of heroes to the point where seeing Seaside Hill in generations is going to cause horrid flashbacks
-I'll start with the most important part of the game to me: Classic Sonic. Unfortunately, my worst fears have come true. The physics aren't Genesis perfect. We knew this after playing the demo. However, I kinda thought I'd get used to it after a few stages. NOPE. Sonic's jump and shitty spindash killed me way too many times. I'm disappointed, but at the same time, I know people are going to tweak the engine for the PC version. Thank you based Sega for releasing this on PC!
-The focus is quite clearly on Modern Sonic. You fight more bosses with him, and overall spend more time playing as him. For me, this sucks. I think you guys know by now, but I'll say it again: I'm not a fan of the Unleashed/Colors style gameplay. Generations has done nothing to change my mind. Those modern Sonic boss battles were horrendous, and I still found myself running into enemies, off cliffs, and just generally feeling like I was not in control of Sonic.
SPOILER FOR CRISIS CITY:
The end of Modern Sonic's act felt an awful lot like one of the mach speed segments in Sonic 06. Of course, the end of Crisis City in Sonic 06 was a mach speed segment... my point is, fucking Modern Sonic controls like a mach speed segment.
-The game is short. I finished it in 5 hours, even faster than I managed to finish Kirby Wii. Didn't see that coming. However, this is not a bad thing. It has about as many stages as one of the Genesis Sonic games, plus challenges. I wouldn't mind if Sega used this approach for future Sonic games. That being said...
-Some of the stages felt way too long. Particularly the Classic Sonic stages. Trying to cram some of the stages into one act (Planet Wisp in particular) just ends up making the stage ridiculously long, with like 20 checkpoints. If they make a sequel, I think they're better off splitting up the stages into 2 zones for Classic and 2 zones for Modern. And speaking of Planet Wisp, stage spoilers
I really wish they kept that wisp bullshit in Modern. I mean, if they wanted to throw one or two of them in there, fine. But the whole god damn stage revolved around that pink wisp. Considering I'm not a fan of Sonic Colors, I wasn't very happy at all.
Okay, now some major story spoilers. Do not read unless you have finished the game.
Classic Eggman showing up was awesome. And the Dr. Robotnik name drop made me squeal like a fanboy. "No one calls me that anymore." Sega be trolling!
The Super Sonic final boss controlled like absolute shit, and I'm still not sure how exactly I got hits in on him. I just kept hitting boost and the a button, and I managed to kill him. It's damn near IMPOSSIBLE to pick up rings with the bad controls, I died due to a lack of rings many times.
Classic Sonic returns to his timeline. And Modern Sonic drops a line that makes me laugh out loud. "Enjoy your future, it's gonna be great!". Modern Sonic confirmed for greatest troll of all time. IIZUKAAAAAAAAAAAAA
All in all, I enjoyed the game. Despite my hatred for Modern Sonic, and my problems with the slightly tweaked Genesis physics, this is the closest we've ever gotten to Sonic 4. The stage designs were very well done. The soundtrack was absolutely orgasmic.
I am happy to say this is the best Sonic game since the Genesis days. I... like this.
Now, the wait begins for the definitive, PC version. Can't wait!
I just went on their page and it has conflicting statements...
Preorder Price Guarantee (I assume I am covered under this, should I wait 2 days?)
"If your order enters the shipping process before the release date and the price is lowered on the release date, we will automatically refund your credit card for the difference between the price you were charged and the release-date price within 48 hours of the release date."
Post-Order Price Match Policy
"With the exception of TVs, we do not offer post-order price matching when an item's price drops after you buy it. Our prices regularly change, and the price you paid when your order shipped was the lowest price we were able to offer at the time. We consistently offer competitive prices on everything we carry because we know low prices are very important to our customers."
. It was quite fun, though a bit frustrating at the end until I started using Mega Man logic (ie: watching patterns). And it's so fun to
use the Bubble Shield again!
The hub world is great too. I love
running by every level just to hear the themes mishmash into each other. A lot of the hub world arrangements are really great too. The audio in this game is blowing my socks off!
