SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4 or AGAINST |OT| of Huelen in Green-Eyed Heaven

At least the front-end presentation in this game is top notch. That map screen is a small addition, but does wonders for livening things up. And I really do like the card idea for Casino act 2. Didn't expect the stage to be so large.

:lol @ all the extra lives

Huh, I'm surprised they changed the Super Sonic music. I think I liked the older version better, but people probably thought it was overkill.

Nice to see it's a long stage, a far cry from the single pinball table iOS buyers got.

Goddamn is the Super Sonic music terrible. It's like they guy who made it (Senoue?) was just playing random notes on his keyboard.

So I'm playing the iPhone/iPod Touch version right now, and there's only one thing I'm thinking of as I'm running through the game -- "haters gonna hate". I dunno guys. I'm really enjoying it. There's only one part of the physics engine that bugs me, and that's the loss of speed when going into circle form. Other than that...even the Homing Attack feels pretty good.

He wanted to keep it consistent with the rest of the music in the game :p

Yeah... I actually like the game's invincibility music so I'm disappointed that they changed Sper Sonic's music. The world map music was pretty nice, though, and the new Act 2 music isn't bad.
Not a fan of how easy it looks, but the level seems pretty fun if not a bit short.

Hang on what was all that about with super sonic's "new" tune? in the old footage we have all seen it was the main theme repeated more or less just like all the older sonic games, here it sounds like some out of tune random crap from fruity loops with a monkey at the controls.

Why did they change it, why did they make it worse? o_O

Yeah, Sonic's definitely not a sprite. The amount of animation they'd have to flatten for the card stuff would have been so crazy that it would have blown the games' file size to bits, especially for WiiWare.

That's what I was thinking too.

Looks horrendous. Too many lives. You might as well just put 1-up monitors everywhere. :lol "fancy" level design yeah right SEGA.

I mentioned it in the previous Sonic thread regarding the ball. It slows Sonic down, and he can't go up ramps in ball form. The game wants you to press right all the time. Watch the video closely.

Music is terribly cheesy. Could they possibly pick worse instruments than the ones currently implemented? The Super Sonic music heavily illustrates how bad the music composition is.

Map screen is fucking useless. It looks like they wanted to do something with their concept art, photoshop it with colors, and paste it in. You can easily access all the levels through the simple menu when it's brought up to choose what act.

This game is not a successor to Sonic and Knuckles as SEGA claims it is.

Played the first level on iPhone. I'm going to try and force myself to play the rest but.. seriously its beyond me how bad they can fuck shit up even still. There's just a feeling of a huge disconnect between the player and Sonic. God damnit, Sonic games will never rise even close to their peak or golden era ever again, and Sonic 4 is a testament to that.

How the fuck did Jun Senoue manage to make this "new" music actually WORSE than the leaked music? Goddamn Sega. The new Menu/Level Select music just meanders. The new Casino Act 2 music is uninspired. The Super Sonic music just sounds like random notes, no real melody AT ALL :lol No joke, this new music is making my skin crawl. :lol Time to take Jun Senoue and put him out to pasture.

Here's the old Super Sonic form from the leaked build. Spoiler: Showing Mad Gear Zone Act 2. Super Sonic music was the same as the invincibility music.

Notice the part when Super Sonic falls off the gear and dies in the bottomless pit. That part looks like a bitch to do without super sonic form. Enemies are all firing at you and exploding stars flying everywhere. Level design yeah right.

Ugh at the part where he needs to homing attack the spring to get to the level above, if he regular jumps on it, it doesn't send him through.

That is pretty janky.

The best part is that you know some Sonic fan with some tech know-how is going to fix this game within the week :lol
Someone's going to make a ROM hack using the Sonic 4 level design using the OLD physics engine.

It'll probably be completely unplayable, at least that's what we were told by the Sonic 4 dev team.

I still don't get why they didn't just reuse the physics engine from the Genesis games?

I guess they thought that making a ground-up one would be beneficial with modern technology, but clearly that wasn't the case in the end.

Playing the original version of that stage I was under the impression that Sega wanted a stage to farm for lives in, and I guess they still really wanted one after removing it. :lol

I strongly doubt that Dimps has anyone on staff familiar with 68k ASM, and I'm not certain that Sega has a copy of the classic source still around even if they did.

Sonic 2 actually had specific music when playing as Super Sonic, not the invincibility or main theme. The Super Sonic model does look lame when standing still.

As far as graphics in general, the game doesnt look bad in the least bit.

I might be mistaken, but when the achievement list came out for the Sonic 4 before it was delayed, I'm pretty sure one of them entailed getting 99 lives.

True but it does share some instruments, this sonic 4 tune is just... I can't believe they are using a shitty tune like that in a game called sonic the hedgehog 4.

Yeah it just sounds like bonus stage music to me...then again all Super Sonic music aside from Sonic 2 seemed to get annoying after awhile. Speaking of bonus stages, I wish they went with an awesome 3d blast saturn/Sonic 2 style bonus stage.

The new Act 2 music doesnt sound bad either...and aside from an overabundance of springs in the beginning, the stage looked kinda fun. Seems like there are a fair amount of separate paths too.

Dont really like the homing attack being used on springs, but it still looks like it could be fun.

They could have done so much with super sonic... and that's what they gave us.

Wait, wait, music aside, what are you talking about? This is the first time in a while Super Sonic's been regularly playable in a Sonic platformer, complete with his hyper-charged physics, floating run, and a special glowing effect. Getting all the emeralds is also rewarded with a tease for Episode 2, which is spoiled now (unless they've altered it on the consoles), but it's still there. We got Sonic 2 Super Sonic, playable regularly in levels instead of reserved for gimmick stages, what else did you want? It's not like we've needed another take on Doomsday for the 10th time.

Or are you just complaining about the shape of his spines or something?

Jun Senoue has been almost completely creatively bankrupt for ten years now. That his work continues to be mediocre and uninspired shouldn't come as a surprise.

Fortunately, if the boss music is any indication, most of this game's soundtrack is scrapped tunes from Jun Senoue's previous work.

Theres passably mediocre and then theres the Sonic 4 soundtrack (some of which is admittedly passably mediocre.)

i don't mind the music at all, its good enough

the only thing in that video that grinds my gears is that the player hardly does anything the whole level. i think making time attack/speed levels is all dimps knows

I wish the phase 2 boss music was the standard. Sounds alot more like an actual boss theme than the first half. Sonic 3/Knuckles, Sonic 3d blast sat, and Sonic CD JP are still top as far as boss music is concerned.
