SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4 or AGAINST |OT| of Huelen in Green-Eyed Heaven

DR2K said:
Played the demo. The physics piss me off, I went to national geographic and the way the hedgehogs move is nothing like in this game. Totally inaccurate, it's impossible to enjoy this game. The visuals were good, the mechanics were solid, I even had fun, but Sega promised me physics, so no buy.
You've obviously never seen a blue hedgehog in real life.

Genuinely shocked that Eurogamer (and the wonderfully cynical Ellie Gibson) gave this a 9/10. That's a positive reception from a site I generally approve of.

What's confusing me though, is that its scoring so high when it seems to have totally broken physics system that is inferior in implementation and execution than its twenty-year-old predecessor.

I thought this would be reasonably important in a platform game and this would be reflected in reviews, clearly I'm wrong. Are the graphics, sound and level design so good that they help players overlook this significant deficiency?

I'm not buying this, but will give the demo a go when I can tear myself away from Minecraft. It would be a pleasant suprise if its better than I am expecting.

Your neckbeard is showing~
but seriously though, the physics feel completely different, but they aren't game breaking. The levels are designed around them and they dont take long to get used to, if the demo is any indication. That said, after playing the demo I'd lean more towards a 7.5 or 8 than a 9. Much better than i expected, but not as good as I'd hoped.

Open your eyes son.

Your just pissed cuz it changes something you already knew. It's a tually good, like I said earlier: rose tinted nostalgia glasses suck major ballsac and ruin this game.

If they had come with the homing attack in 1996 and this were have been a direct sequel to 3, would you be bitching like this?

It's a good game, give it a chance.

Btw, if you curl while running, well, do a diagonal and sonic won't slow down.

Protip: if you curl while running, if you leave the down plus the side you're running, speed won't decrease.

The physics are not broke, they are different. You have to adjust to them if all you've played recently are games from twenty years ago, if you have played any recent platforming effots you should be just fine. I like the comparison to NSMB, it was a great throwback but the visuals / physics were not SMB3 / SMW. Did that stop it from being a fun game? No. I am more than happy to support this kind of effort from Sega, it is so much in a right direction for sonic that It's almost scary they worked on it.

Also homing attack does not ruin the game, there I said it.

I think they will go all new. This was the introductory episode and they wanted to give fans some of that nostalgia going in, so they brought the classic levels back. We know
Metal Sonic
is returning and it looks like
Tails
may be along for the ride as well. (But that's all speculation due to an emblem on a rocket.)

Don't expect the controls/physics to change much. If they lock on episode 2 to 1 they will need consistency. I do expect the uncurling to be gone due to the incredibly heavy demand by fans, but homing attack will stay.

What I'm saying is, if you don't like episode 1, I doubt you'll like episode 2.
I liked the game, looking forward to the next one.

I saw one of these moments in the casino level Act 1.

This has been a problem since the beta old Act 2.

Some of the jarring instruments that were noticeable in the beta have been switched out to xylophone tunes, which was a nice a change. Instead of sounding goofy, they sounded acceptable.

Overall, from what I've played from the final and seen in the leaked videos, the game is acceptable but by no means worthy of a successor title especially the name Sonic the Hedgehog 4. This is more like Sonic Advance 4 but still can't match the physics set 16 years ago. How can a follow up game not match its predecessor still boggles my mind.

It's no Sonic 2006, but it deserves a C- rating due to its clunky controls. I enjoyed Sonic Advance 1 way more than this Sonic.

I can't tell you how many times I wanted Sonic to accelerate faster in certain sections that caused death. Also there seems to be a section near every end of each level that wants to piss you off. For instance, the construction of a ton of bottomless pits for first timers is very unforgiving as you don't see what's coming up next. Not to mention the gimmick implemented pisses you off as it's either you die because the slow acceleration or because the gimmick is just stupid.

Also for special stages, what were they thinking? Bring back the old school Sonic 1 format not this turn table piece of shit.

Make the end goal ring hit-zone larger as well.

:lol comparison to NSMBW. This game does not even come close at all.

Don't hold your breath, freak. Impressing you is about as high on my list as impressing kittonwy.

Oh don't get me wrong, I don't expect it to actually happen. You've been in the major negatives ever since you insulted me based on my religion and it's been a downward slope since then.

It doesn't mean I don't occasionally laugh at your posts though, you are occasionally funny.

It has changed quite significantly at least twice now. They've struck a pretty fine balance between evolving the series and not alienating old fans of the series. Something Sonic could probably learn from.

Sonic and Pokemon defined a good chunk of my childhood. I stopped playing both for some time. One I found worth going back to later. The other I didn't. Pokemon was able to appeal to the players who had grown up with the games by offering enough that was new while keeping its original charm. Sonic was not.
See Sonic 4 appealed to me and so did Sonic unleashed. I played Sonic 1991 when I was 7, it's been awhile.

Pokemon also appeals to me but it gets harder to finish the games when they are essentially the same thing with 8 gym leaders etc.

For you, the day Segata cracked a joke about your spiritual beliefs was the most important day of your life.

For Segata, it was a... was it a Tuesday? Maybe a Friday? Fucked if I know. Go figure of all the times I've attempted to hurtfully offend you, you caught feelings over a joke.

yeah, i didn't enjoy the casino zone at all. the last two zones were better, but all had moments that made me want to chuck the wiimote. the torch "puzzle", the death walls, and the huge bottomless pits. some levels were really too long, and started to drag on me.

............................

:lol I decided to run through the first zone of sonic 2, and i keep trying to use the damn homing attack. i keep running into enemies :(

ahh... but this game still feels so right.

Oh, come off it. The game is different, but it is in no way broken. It plays very well and is deserving of good marks. Solid controls are important in a platform game and, guess what, this game has great controls.

I'm with the poster above; if this had been released in 1997 on the Saturn with the same changes, people would have been praising the shit out of it.

comparison to NSMBW. This game does not even come close at all.
I respectfully disagree.

So are the physics floaty? What are people hating with the physics?

No air momentum. Combined with homing and air dash, though, it isn't much of problem, just different. It's definitely jarring at first.

Oh I didn't put very much thought into it. But it's not exactly like I forgot about it. If this had all happened next month I probably wouldn't have even mentioned it.

Get over yourself if you think you're that important. :lol Thinking I'm tripping over myself hoping you'll get my respect, with a big banner over my computer saying "ON THIS DAY SEGATA INSULTED YOU." Who do you think you are? :lol

Game has terrible controls. It plays nothing like the Genesis predecessors. I listed my reasons why, but you say get used to it.

That's like saying I drive a car and think the steering precision and wheel alignment is off. Then you say get used to it. What the fuck dude. The old car drove better.

When Angry Video Game Nerd rages about why something is slow, your reason would be, "Get used to it. AVGN sucks at games." smh

Someone can easily make that famous quote from his Silver Surfer review, "You go too far to the left you die. You go too far right, you die. You die die die die die die die die." in this game.

We are comparing to DS NSMB, I don't know where people are getting NSMB Wii from but I guess it's not GAF without jumping to conclusions with no factual backing.
