It only has the best music of the series.

Oh, hell naw. Knuckles is the best character in the damn series. You're one of those people who pledged to rebuy Sonic 1 for the million time on Sonic 4 launch day, aren't you?

Not really :lol Although I'd rather buy Sonic 1 or 2 a millionth time than buy Sonic 4 a second time :D

Yea, it's like night and day, that different! Overexaggeration of the century, right there buddy! Also, with 20 years of Sonic instinct, you should be right at home with this. If you played Unleashed, you'd be used to this game by now. Here's for everyone here, Sonic has changed a lot since Sonic and Knuckles. He has evolved and that's why he's not exactly the same as the damn Genesis games. If you've played any of the recent 2D Sonic games, you wouldn't be complaining nearly as much about this.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I have owned every 2D Sonic game, since the original trilogy. I've got the 3 Advance games, the two DS games and just about every other game released with Sonic's face on it for the last 16 years.

Not very proud of that, but there it is.

I like Sonic Rush, and Sonic Rush Adventure, this doesn't feel like them either. I've tried to finish Sonic Unleashed recently, after taking a large break from playing it. Sonic's day time stages are a lot of fun. I don't even mind the Werehog sections until they became terribly broken and seemingly never ended.

Sonic 4 is just weird to me. I'll buy it when it's on sale, or when they bundle all three episodes together, no doubt.

I also got all 180 emblems in SA2 on the Dreamcast to play the Green Hill remake, it's fantastic. I was unable to re-create that feat in the Gamecube version, which made it even more difficult to get all A-Ranks.

What is with people's love of Hydrocity 2 when Hydrocity 1 is better? :|

Was just about to post that :3

also, ice cap has no where near the best music in the series, or even in sonic 3.

Anyway I tried out the trial for this game and as it is now I'm not buying it. The animation is much worse when it's actually on my TV, homing attack is weird and Sonic feels awful to control.

Me too. I consider it one of the best songs in the whole series.

Come on, everybody knows that Chemical Plant has the best music in any Sonic game, hell, in anything, ever.
This guy's got it.

Played the demo, it actually looks good, but just doesn't play right. But I do feel like I could enjoy playing through it maybe.

Ugh. How is this possible. Disgusting.

-Pre-Sonic 3 sprites lacked detail, and animated in an inferior way.
-Tails can't even fly, just a Sonic clone, which made co-op useless and kinda impossible.
-The levels are shorter, and seem very divided.
-No ability to save your progress.
-The graphics lacked grit and were too clean.
-Chemical Plant Zone
-The entirety of Sonic CD.
-Sonic 2 had the weakest music of the trilogy, except Sky Chase.
-AND it is almost half as long as Sonic 3k combined.

The bonus stages were neat though, although technical limitations made it harder to line up to get a ring than it should. Hill Top Zone was great too. Sonic 2 (and CD) aren't bad games by any means, but they aren't better than Sonic 3k by any measurable means.
Did you really just list Chemical Plant Zone as a bad thing? All future and past opinions of yours have now been rendered invalid.

Well, I finally finished it.

Ignoring all of the "it's not like the classic games" talk and judging it on its own merits, I thought the game was...alright. I liked a lot of the level design, but everything around it felt a bit sloppy and rushed. I'm sure many of the finer details have been beat to death here, so i'll just leave it at that. I can't help but be just a little disappointed, as it was decent but forgettable.

I will reiterate. Fuck the special stages. Number 6 is irritating
The special stages suck in this game. They took the worst special stages in the series and made them even worse.

I apologize. I am not a classic Sonic fan, and do not have nostalgia of the original games. I should not be speaking about classic Sonic games here.

Just bought the full game and after playing some more of the stages I am starting to like it. The labyrinth zones are pretty well done the second splash hill has much better music than the first stage and mad gear is pretty good.
As a 2d sonic game it's competent and its better than any other console sonic in the past 16 years or however long it's been since sonic 3 but as a supposed sequel to the megadrive games it fails, sonic advance 1 did a better job IMO.
The only part that feels like I'm playing a genuine megadrive sonic sequel is the special stages and it's the only part of the game that doesn't look like everything is made out of cheap plastic.

Wait, seriously?

If I'm not mistaken, I think Wily became a Sonic fan after playing Sonic Adventure 2 (I seem to remember him mentioning it in a thread once). I think he also mentioned that he considered SA2 to be the best Sonic game, and that he didn't like the classic Sonic games all that much. I might be wrong though.

Close enough. The first Sonic game I bothered playing was SA2 when the Gamecube came out. I liked it. It made me interested in the series, so I got the older games, which I liked as well.

But as a result, I could not "acquire" the popular opinions the other Sonic fans here hold. I think the best Sonic game is the SRB2 fangame, or Sonic 3K for official games.

You are corrupted.

SRB2 is an interesting experiment that's not that much fun to play because it controls exactly like you would think a platformer in the Doom engine would.

But in Willy's eyes it's better than S1... and S2... And hell, S3&K...
I almost threw my laptop out the window upon reading that.

when I was little I thought Sonic 3 took place in Africa and Knuckles was a racist caricature of black people (because of the dreadlocks)

Also, does Sonic 4 take place on Mobius or Earth (Station Square?) because in the Casino level you can see what appears to be an expansive Las Vegas in the background.

It's a legitimate, if debatable, opinion to prefer modern Sonic games over the classic Sonic games, but to prefer Sonic Robo Blast 2 over games like Sonic 1 and 2? That's just.. wow

I'd assume it's supposed to follow the plot of Sonic 1-3&K, where it takes place on a set of fictional pacific islands on our planet. The Mobius thing came from the cartoons or the comics IIRC, and Station Square isn't really located on any of those islands, I think.

the FUCK?

It's funny you mention these...Chemical Plant Zone's music might be the best in the entire series. I seriously can't get enough of that song. Sometimes I just play it on sound test and let it play while I do homework or something.

Sonic 2's soundtrack was fantastic, all the way through. Better than Sonic 1 IMO, and very close to Sonic 3 (hard to top a soundtrack composed by Michael Jackson).

It has nothing to do that the quality of one game is better than another, but a genre preference. SRB2 is certainly better designed and made than any of the 3D games, despite having Saturn graphics.

What? No, the music was fine. It was the level that was terrible. I understand Sonic games had a proud tradition of having bad second levels, but Chemical Plant almost broke the game for me before I realized I could skip it.

Sonic Adventure has aged horribly, Sonic Heroes is mediocre at best, and Unleashed was ruined by the shitty werehog stages, but I'd take those three over SRB2 any day, really.
