Favourite composers? I have a post from the past for this, which I will amend because I've dropped a few composers from that list.

Shoji Meguro
I got hooked on Shoji Meguro a few years into university. I like his guitar, electronic, pop and jazz tracks. It was a breath of fresh air to me. I love how his themes can be upbeat and poppy, calm and jazzy, fast-paced and chaotic, head-banging, gentle and atmospheric or others. It just seems like the guy has command over many different genres and can pull any card of his deck and work with it. And the result ends up being great and/or listenable, no matter what.

Mist (PMLB Ver)
Ikebukuro
Signs of Love
Battle for Survival
Epic Battle
Master of Tartarus
Roux
Lost
Stray Sheep
Lights of Life

Masashi Hamauzu
I imported Sigma Harmonics and could not believe the sound coming out of my DS speakers. I had to know who this was. I looked it up and was happy to hear it was Hamauzu. I liked this tracks on the FFX OST and Unlimited SaGa. I decided to seek out more of his repertoire, and I’m constantly surprised and content with what I hear from him. He’s not only great at classical, ambient and electronic stuff, but when he expands into different genres, they’re generally well-composed and very pleasing to the ear.

Dust to Dust
Feldschlacht I
A Broken Wonder
Knight of the Goddess
Heartening "Dance of the Cornered Rat"
Battle Theme I
Fight for Justice
Fight Tune "Girl Named Shelke"
Besaid Island

Miki Higashino
The composer of Gradius, Salamander and Genso Suikoden, and For me, part of Genso Suikoden was Miki Higashino. It wasn’t only the games’ narratives, but the soundscape, which impacted the overall strength of certain scenes, making them even more memorable than they would be on their own. The melodies are catchy, heartfelt, tense, silly, or... how should I put this... “comfortable”? They’re generally quite beautiful, and even moreso when arranged.

Into a World of Illusions
Reminiscence
Gothic Neclord
(Suikogaiden Vol 1)
Gradius Arcade OST
Forgotten Days
(Celtic Ver)
The Chase
Beautiful Morning

Yoshitaka Hirota
Hirota hasn’t gotten a lot of solo composition work since Shadow Hearts closed shop (he mostly does arrangements now). He not only defined Shadow Hearts’s soundscape, but its mood, atmosphere and settings with his incredible scores (with a little help from Mitsuda and other composers (most notably Tomoko Imoto on SH3’s OST). With scores including pieces ranging from gentle acoustic pieces, quick electronic pieces and beautiful sombre melodies, it’s impossible for me to ignore him and these soundtracks. I eagerly await the day when he can compose another album again.

Plains ~ Sphere -qu-
Decisive Battle ~ Imbroglio
Midboss II ~ Demon's Gig
The Fate ~ Cluster Amaryllis
In Darkness of a Labyrinth ~ Dungeon
Ladder to Heaven
ICARO -Acoustic Arrangement-
Delusion of Death
Lady Tears II

Someone needs to find this guy more work. Seriously.

Anyone who worked as part of the Falcom Sound Team JDK in the past or present
I’m surprised there aren’t a lot of mentions in this thread for the Falcom Sound Team, but I guess it’s because composers on this team seem to be ever-changing. I personally like their PCE and X68000 stuff more than their other stuff. It can be rockin’, fast paced, jazzy, impactful or anything else. The nice part of a composition team is that you don’t just get one guy’s perspective of a scene or track, but many others as well. I think that’s a huge strength of the Falcom Sound Team, and that’s why a lot of their stuff is generally memorable.

The Strongest Foe (PCE Ver)
A Great Ordeal (PCE Ver)
Silver Will
Crossing Rage!
Mythical Land Serpentina
Stranger ~ Wandering Swordsman
Detemination of Fight
Cry for Your Eternity
Overdosing Heavenly Bliss
Inevitable Struggle
For the Beloved Friends

Tomoya Ohtani
I think Ohtani’s my favourite out of the entire Sonic Sound Team. There aren’t a lot of tracks of his that I dislike (and I can’t say the same for Senoue); and compared to Senoue, it seems like he gets that “simple” works well when arranging compositions.

Planet Wisp Act 1
Aquarium Part Act 1
Deeper
Ocean Base Act 3
Rescue!
Crisis City ~The Flame ~ Skyscraper ~ Whirlwind ~ Tornado~

Yuzo Koshiro
Yuzo Koshiro is my favourite composer of the forever. I will love his work for all eternity. It's just so amazing to me that he started out in the industry when he was in high school and continued on to continue to create a very consistent sound. I’ve elaborated on why I love Koshiro’s stuff before. I don’t like him just for his Streets of Rage stuff, his Etrian Odyssey stuff or his Shenmue stuff alone. His soundtrack for 7th Dragon was amazing, as was his Ys, ActRaiser, Shinobi, Sonic, The Scheme and others as well. I don’t think there are a lot of tracks of his that I don’t like.

I love Koshiro. He's probably my favourite composer ever when all is said and done.

Kenichi Tokoi
I want to add Kenichi Tokoi to that Sega Sound Team bit, because I've come to absolutely adore his works over the course of last year. He's certainly not afraid with experimenting with different genres, and his bits in Unleashed have proven that he's an incredibly diverse composer, capable of taking any sort of genre and delivering a wonderful soundscape for players to listen to as they run through various zones.

The Follin Brothers, as Quackula has pointed out. And Naoki Kodaka has done some very excellent stuff, ranging from Journey to Silius to Albert Odyssey. Those were very good picks, Quack.

Mega Man's had a ton of great composers come and go from the series as well, from Manami Matsumae, Takashi Tateishi, Bun Bun, Minae Fujii, etc. They've all done a phenomenal job on the series.

---

Yasunori Mitsuda used to be one of mine, but that guy peaked during Chrono Cross/Xenogears, and his work today doesn't really measure up to those two pinnacle albums. I do like some of this stuff from time to time, but he has not matched his peak at all.

Motoi Sakuraba's been doing some good stuff with Xillia 2 and Dark Souls. He needs to do more stuff to pique my interest more.

I wish Masahiro Ando would compose for video games more than the stint he did for Arc the Lad. And the music in those games is excellent. Take a listen to the Arc I arrange album. It's very reminiscent of T-Square's stuff. BTW, T-SQUARE is amazing and you all should listen to them. Their jazz fusion is so good. I was so damn happy to hear that calibre of rhythm and bass in Arc 1-3.

Is SonicGaf that old, cause I don't remember hearing you say that.
I've been posting in Sonic threads since 2011. SonicGAF the community is just over a year old.

David Bergeaud is the man as well. Listen to his stuff people (Ratchet and Clank series)

EDIT: This is also your daily PSA to get your butts on PSO2. QQ needs more allies.

Koshiro's soundtrack might have been my favorite part of Etrian Odyssey IV, and I liked a lot of things about that game.

Koshiro's been covered, so I'll just post some of my favorite stuff from Michiru Yamane:

- Dance of Pales (Symphony of the Night)

- Crystal Teardrops (Symphony of the Night)

- Wandering Ghosts (Symphony of the Night)
- The Tragic Prince (Symphony of the Night)
- Wood Carving Partita (Symphony of the Night)

One of the reasons that Symphony of the Night is pretty much my favorite gaming soundtrack is because of how diverse it is. Jazzy one moment, classical the next, full on rock afterwards. Yamane has some damn great compositional range, and it really shines here.

I adore her work on Castlevania: Bloodlines as well: (If I hear one complaint about the Genesis soundchip, I swear to god I will fight you)

- Calling From Heaven

- Iron Blue Intention

- The Sinking Old Sanctuary

I'd gush more, but I just got back from a an impromptu nearly two night long road trip to Niagara Falls, and I'm tired as hell.

Oooh, I hope that went well for you. :O

Yeah, Yamane's jazz and rock stuff is good. A little bit of the stuff she did for Genso Suikoden III was alright (I believe she did Searching for a Hero, which is one of my favourite pieces in GS3), but overall, that soundtrack was a transition soundtrack that didn't exactly use the right samples to make the compositions excel at all (and to be honest, a lot of the compositions were pretty meh).

Koshiro's soundtrack might have been my favorite part of Etrian Odyssey IV, and I liked a lot of things about that game.
I still have to get around to Soul Hackers and EO4. They're both still in their wrap.

Just been busy lately, and I had a bit of a tough month in general. Hopefully my schedule will clear up soon.

Man, there's too many great video game music, it's hard to pick my top favorite composer. A lot of them are damn great though. I think Falk, KgZ and the rest of the BtS/AtS music staff deserves an honorable mention for their fantastic work.

Damn, those songs you posted makes me want to play SotN again!

I remember reading somewhere that JDK vowed that even if the game sucked, you would at least still love the music.

VJC Returns 3D.

Still waiting on Konami to actually port or re-release bloodlines on something but since this is modern Konami I think i'll be waiting for a loooong time, maybe I should just swipe my friends Mega Drive and Bloodlines cart.

Yo, these Bloodlines songs give me life

Always knew you had good taste, JC. (Welcome back)

I always found it weird that three of Konami's classic Genesis titles (Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra: Hard Corps and Bloodlines) got current gen direct sequels in some way (Rocket Knight, Hard Corps: Uprising & Portrait of Ruin) yet, the original titles have never seen any sort of re-release.

Yeah, Konami really makes no sense. Also Rocket Knight was terrible, why didn't they re-release the 16bit games instead of out sourcing that mediocre sequel?

Konami Genesis games > respective Konami SNES counterparts*

FIGHT MEEEEEEEEE

ok, maybe not TMNT or Sunset Riders

I can mostly agree with that.

Though I think Hard Corps and Contra III are pretty close in terms of quality, and Sparkster SNES kicks the shit out of the Genesis version of the sequel.

Also Rocket Knight was terrible, why didn't they re-release the 16bit games instead of out sourcing that mediocre sequel?

It's not even the fact that they outsourced it that bothers me, it's that they outsourced it to the wrong guys. They were smart enough to give Contra 4 to WayForward, Hard Corps Uprising to ArcSys, and the ReBirth games to M2. Then they go and give Rocket Knight to the Silent Hill: Shattered Memories guys? How does that even make sense?

The JC has come back to the NeoG.A.F.

Are we talking about Sunset Riders Arcade?

That game doesn't exist. I don't know what you're talking about, qq.

There aren't a lot of Falcom games that outright suck outside of a select few because their development style is one that even Square-Enix should learn from.

Finally got that Sonic Generations Platinum.

It Doesn't Matter was a big help.
Congrats. I used What I'm Made Of, Live and Learn, and Reach for the Stars because eff y'all, I like that song.

Who doesn't like Reach for the Stars? those monsters!

I think I used Flying Battery Zone for that "fun" little trophy (we're on about beat Time Eater without getting hit right?), the best part about it was that it wasn't even clear if you got hit or not.

I wish they had Casino Night Zone 2 Player...I'd add that to a bunch of stages.

Toxic Caves works really well for Chemical Plant Zone in Generations, only because they don't provide me with the SUPERIOR Genesis Chemical Plant Zone music.

But they did supply you with superior Genesis Mega Drive Chemical Plant in Generations.

All this Reach for The Stars talk made me quickly play some Colours levels, ah the classic controller pro is not so good for this, I miss my GC controller but I can live, yep Colours is still good stuff, love the world themes and Frenzy Wisp is one of the greatest kill everything in your path powers going.

It didn't sound the same to me for some reason...=/

hey Sonic-GAF, I need some help. I've started collecting the Worlds Collide series, but missed the first issues and it's Variants, anyone know of a good non-eBay place where I might find them for a reasonable price?

Lots of people hate that song!

For better measure, you can also pose this question in the Worlds Collide thread to see if you can get some better answers.

If you want them later, I believe you can order them directly from Archie per arc (StH, SU, MM). If you want the entire Worlds Collide set, well, Archie has a page up for ordering them + the variant covers. But they are pricey as heck.

If you want them now, the only thing I can probably recommend is going to a local comic shop who would get a bigger stock of the comics and who would keep the back-issues around in boxes. Since my comic shop doesn't get a lot of stock in, I usually reserve mine. As for the variants, you have to hunt those down at a comic shop. My comic shop didn't get those in, so I'm sticking with the primary covers.

I honestly would have suggested Graham Crackers, but it looks like they're sold out of some stock. Midtown looks like they have some.

I'll keep that in mind for future reference, and I am looking for now, since I picked up part 2 (regular & variant) and 3 (variant), plus the FCBD issue. I had planned to pick up part one during the weekend of release but the local shop here was sold out, which is weird because whenever I had the interest to pick up certain Archie Sonic issues they were usually in stock. So now I usually call in advance to have the issue set aside for me, but I'm stuck looking for #1 and I never noticed it was 2 Variant covers. Guess I'll take a look around more.

Thanks for the help.

That's AC2 and Jak & Daxter Platinumed. I fear this is a dangerous hole I'm falling down.
AC2's platinum is so easy, though! Try something harder. :V

Even I have AC2's platinum. >.>

*stops Noi from posting how many platinums I have even though he has like 95 platinums or something*

No problem. I wanted to get the FCBD issue, too, and I'm kinda hoping they set it aside for me, but I deeply doubt they would have since it's FCBD.

Good luck! I hope you find it! I know someone else who's trying to track one of the issues down and he's having a tough time finding it, too! I guess they must be in high demand.

That would be the SNES version, which was a pretty faithful port. The Genesis version is kind of its own thing, using the basic gameplay of the other two versions but having mostly unique stages.
Ahhhh. Yeah, the SNES version was definitely the better port.

Yea, when I went to FCBD yesterday, I saw that the issue wasn't on the table...luckly I called the shop owner who knows I'm now collecting the crossover and set aside a copy for me. Thanks again, I'll keep on searching.
