So I randomly started up a playthrough of Sonic Unleashed last night.
The first two werehog stages weren't bad. They were annoyingly back to back but they were about ten minutes each and honestly more fun than some Sonic Heroes levels that have lasted that long.

Then I kept playing up till the Chun-Nan night stage. Fuck the Werehog

Chun-Nan night is rage inducing. That one fucking pole vault......so many lives were lost because I didn't know you had to jump after you were flung in the air. Wtf.

Man, I know EXACTLY where you're talking about. This and Eggmanland were the worst Werehog stages in the game. Some really aren't that bad though, if not relaxing even! I know I had the best time in the Spagonia, Apotos, and Holoska night stages. But if the stage lasted longer than 15 minutes to beat, fuck you.

You know what sticks in my mind most about Chun-Nan night?
The fucking bees.

Why did they make the bees so hard to kill? They are like the toughest enemy in the game.

Those wasps/bees, those bloody wasps and bees!
If Werehog stages are brought up I can't avoid expressing my rage at them, the damage they dealt if you buggered up your quick time event attack was pretty high if memory serves.

As for Dragon Road Night, all I remember is jumping across crates over instant death water without a shadow which was like throwing the 3D platforming rules out of the window entirely.

This bullshit. I don't know why I had such a hard time on those jumps, but I did. The werehog's jump (and double-jump) is short, which makes it worse.

I dont know if theres a part where they force you to do that, but I noticed on optional path like this where the only reward was a moon medal and I instantly went "Fuck that" and ignored it.

Mazuri was pretty fun! I played it a second time to pick up some medals and I had a pretty good time.
My only complaint about Spagonia are the shitty camera angles for the clock tower section at the end. That should have been a decent PoP esque section if it wasn't for the camera forcing blind jumps across the gears

Actually looking up a video of the stage while making this post, I got pretty close to the end of the level! I should have just stuck with it instead of giving up and playing Shadows of the Damned instead. I gave up on that pole vault section where you need to jump midair

I agree with this. Chun-nan's Werehog stage is so bad because of that jumping over water nonsense. I don't like Eggmanland in general, but the music's cool!

I think there were a ton of enemies in Shamar's Night Stage and it just felt like a boss gauntlet sometimes. I didn't like that one much either. :/

Whose bright idea was it to make those bees so damned overpowered anyway? There is ZERO reason for them to be that powerful in the first place.

They're fucking bees.

This.

THIS.
The worst Werehog stage for me was Skyscraper Scamper Night.

That FUCKING Big Ben man...
Holy crap this too. With the werehog being so sluggish this level made me ragequit the game for a few weeks. I literally felt exhausted after playing through this level.

Dragon Road night was awesome simply because once you learned the best path, you can beat it in like three minutes.

You must've played through this level more than once because once I did it I never went through it again! lol

I'm hovering over the "Buy Now" icon on Sonic CD in the playstation store. Should I get it? I've never played it before; my favourite Sonic game is Sonic 2.

It is the best version of what many consider the best Sonic game ever released. I don't, but enough other people do that it's probably worth buying.

You know what at $5 there's really no reason I shouldn't get it.
Out of curiosity which game do you consider the best in the series?

It would have to be Sonic 3 & Knuckles, for me. But that might be because that is the first Sonic game I really managed to sink my teeth in to hard. It's a long story that I've told too many times, but my brother got a Sega Genesis with Sonic 1 in 1991 and I only ever got to play it one time before he moved out. I spent three years begging my Mom for a Genesis of my own and she got me a SNES instead.

I've come to blame that for the reason I ended up a Sonic fan - I loved what I played of Sonic 1, and most other encounters with Sonic games in the following years were frustratingly brief and often separated by weeks or even months. The first gaming magazine I ever read was an issue of Gamepro with a Sonic 3 strategy guide in it - I memorized the entire game front to back before I ever picked up a controller. For my birthday that year I was finally given a Genesis of my own, with Sonic 2 and Sonic 3.

It was either Christmas Break 1994 or Summer Break 1995, me and a few of my friends took turns renting a copy of Sonic & Knuckles from a local video store, beating the game in every possible configuration to see if there were any more "hidden" levels like Doomsday Zone or if the ending changed at all. We turned that game inside out.

Those are some of my most nostalgic memories of videogames.

Years ago, I also put together this list on GiantBomb.

Reading your list now, it's giving me a huge blast of nostalgia.
My first Sonic game was Sonic 2, my friend and I played that game like everyday growing up. I never had Sonic and Knuckles but late last year I was actually fortunate enough to come across a physical copy at a local video game store, so I obviously bought it. It's high on my list too.

As for Sonic CD, I'm at Quartz Quadrant now. The game itself is great so far, the gameplay is really good and feels refined. My only qualm is the music; Sonic games always have great music, but so far I haven't been blown away, definitely not in the way I was when I first booted up Sonic 1 or 2.

You can change music in Sonic CD to whichever OST version you want.

(JP aka default OST is the best though)

I mixed it up, first run I did everything was default with sonic, then when I unlocked tails I stuck the US tracks on to freshen up the replay, good times.

Yep and then on my third run I mix and matched my favourites between the 2 soundtracks, yes it was worth hoping back to the menu every few stages to do this to create the ultimate soundtrack experience.

I rank them Sonic 3 & Knuckles > Sonic 2 > Sonic CD > Sonic 1.

I really don't like Sonic CD that much, but I rank it above Sonic 1 because Sonic 1 is just too prototypical, same reason SMB will always be last on my list of 2D Mario games. Sonic CD just has very bad level design, imo. Levels are wide open. Rather than paths its more like random obstacles floating in the aether. The idea behind it is that you are supposed to explore the level for past sign posts, then find a place where you can speed long enough to time travel, then destroy a badnik teleporter. I like exploration in Sonic games, but here the levels are too unfocused. It just feels like a random level generator made the game. If you just want to get from beginning to end there's not very much stimulation.

The time travel mechanic is pretty annoying, too. Future sign posts and finding a spot to speed are major pains in the ass, making it more frustrating than fun. Usually you'll end up looking for a pair of springs or something.

It's still more than worth buying at $5, especially if it leads to ports of the better games or even new games using the engine.

Ultimate soundtrack = US opening and ending, JP everything else.

You'd probably have to mix in US invincibility/speed shoes/level clear tunes, too, then, because they use the JP OP/ED in them.

Consistency!

I've got to make the switch for Wacky Workbench and Collision Chaos, also the US bonus stage/menu music is kind of funky.

And I agree on your assessment of the level design, backtracking through Sonic CD stages and their almost random pathways filled with springs, dead ends and future signs you want to avoid like death itself makes the full experience of generator hunting a lot less fun than it should be.

Totally and utterly agreed. I just couldn't get into it, espcially after all the hype :(

It does have one of my favorite Stage Cleared jingles though.

Just beat it now. Game was great; I played it as a traditional Sonic game, that is, I didn't go for the generators or whatever and just tried getting to the goals. I really enjoyed it, the bosses were fine too.
Next playthrough I'll incorporate more of the past/future stuff.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is amazing. I absolutely love how there's different content for each character.

Sonic 3 is a great game, and I've really warmed up to it the last few years, although I do think Sonic & Knuckles is the better half of the game. That said, for various reasons I don't like it quite as much as Sonic 1 and 2, but it's still a classic within its genre.

As for Sonic CD, it's just awful level design with terrible bosses (except for the Metal Sonic race) on top if it. The bonus stages are awesome (but FUCK bonus level 5 in the HD version right up its nose) and I dig the NA soundtrack, but as a whole I really don't like the game at all. Still, it's better than garbage like Sonic Blast and Sonic Labyrinth.

Actually, I thought the bosses were some of the best in the series; a lot of creativity and diversity in what they do and how you take them down. I mean, a boss shielding himself with bubbles, which double as your only means of survival? A boss that wears itself down with a conveyor? I love it.

No matter how good or unique the other bosses in Sonic CD, I will never forgive that game for the Collision Chaos boss.
That is by far the worst Sonic boss from an actually good game.

The final few levels of Sonic CD are definitely the worst group of final levels in the original 4/5 games. Sonic 2's latter portion is almost seems to drag on; everything after Casino Night Zone is pretty meh until Metropolis Zone happens (ahem), but that's really the only zone that's rage inducing or anything like that (unless you aren't a fan of Sky Chase and Wing Fortress, which aren't too bad IMO). Both Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles (and the combo) have that progression that makes every level memorable, at least. Then you factor in the other characters and the fact that the levels themselves aren't bad *coughfairlyeasycough* and you get a smooth ride the whole way through. In short, Sonic 3&K is indeed amazing.

Sonic CD can be rage-inducing at any point depending on what your objectives are, but the really "URRGH" moments start to drop around Tidal Tempest and pop in and out up until Stardust Speedway. That level lures you into a false sense of security before you run face first into Metallic Madness... Oy, Metallic Madness. ._.

Honestly, I find Sonic 1 to be... weird. I think someone before described it as prototypical or primordial or something? For me it's like the original Crash Bandicoot, in that it's not bad, but I definitely value and prefer the advancements made in the sequels. :x

Time Eater?
One of the worst-designed bosses I've encountered. The entire sequence is such a damn mess. The boss itself isn't awful because you have to dodge his clapping hands if you want the trophy, meaning you have to go up/down/back away to dodge then go into the core. But the rest of the sequence is just stupid stupid stupid. What a mess.

BE CAREFUL SONIC.

Ultimate soundtrack = US opening and ending, JP everything else.
This guy knows what's up.

That bee was just minding his own business. But I must ask... does Charmy Bee even fit in this category of badass bees?

I'm so glad the 3DS version had a good Time Eater boss fight.

Charmy is one of the worst Sonic characters ever. I hate him so much.

And it's sad because he used to be my 2nd favorite Knuckles Chaotix character because of his game-breaking flying. :lol

last night i had a dream qq more told me in irc that i had the most posts in this thread

and then i woke up and it was true and i had been on irc in my sleep

I remember my experience with Sonic 4 ep. 1 demo like it was yesterday.

Booted it up, tried to ignore the shitty visuals and eat-gratting music. I got on a ledge, did a spindash and jumped off at the last second like the old days, FELL STRAIGHT DOWN.

"...no...this is...this is wrong", turned off PS3.
