I think this lee toric will be the big next season thing, at least to start off. Then again something is about to happen in the final few mins. Cliffhanger of course.

As soon as Tara tells Jax that Gemma did it, isn't Gemma going to be locked out again? Not sure how this is supposed to work out long term for Gemma.

yeah that's exactly what I'm not getting. Seems like it'll be easy for Tara to say that to Jax first time she has a chance.

I don't think Gemma did it.

Didn't she tell Clay everything that happened? He probably said something as retaliation against them since they pinned Pope's murder on him.

either way. what a shittastic finale. This show has fallen off hard. It's Season 8 House bad now.

but his evidence is nothing but suspicion, gemma is the one with real evidence. The security tapes. But yeah I don't think it's Gemma either. Seems weak.
Even with the security tapes, I suppose Gemma has to say "oh, she made me bring it to end the RICO case through Otto" otherwise Tara can continue to claim it was a mistake and she didn't know it was going to happen. Maybe something else is going on.

We got an A from the AVClub!

Thanks for watching guys and keeping us employed. I actually liked the finale a lot compared to the last episode. There are still some things I'm not 100% with, but I was really happy with how most of the arcs came down. The second half felt like a preview for season 6.

I guarantee you it was written open ended because the writers haven't decided if they want it to be Gemma or Toric or what.

I liked the episode too mostly. Like the avclub review says, Jax is a better clay than clay!

I would honestly guess they have an idea, but want it open ended to the viewer. It puts the viewer in the same place as Tara and knowing as much as she does. Just my feeling. Maybe they don't. I have no idea.

If it was Gemma, wouldn't her story make her an accessory to murder as well?

"She told me she wanted the cross to murder someone, so I got her the cross!"

hahaha didn't even think of that. Add to that how easily it can blow up in her face, I don't think it was her. She also had this look like wtf... when she saw the cops.

I just caught the Tig scene on the replay. Oh my. I was getting all emotional when Tig first realized he was being handed over. Glad he got to kill Pope.

Ivy, do you guys have any control over the special episodes? How many there are? By "you guys", I mean the higher ups, obviously. Or does Fox just say "you know what? fuck it. we'll do it live"?

Terrible ending, but Jax is one of the most cunning people on the show. Between season 3's finale and this one he always has something as a backup. Unfortunately, I don't think this show can last a season more without being terrible by the end let alone 2 seasons. Gemma needed to die so long ago.

Define special?

Out of curiosity, what was terrible? I was happy that Tara made a decision to get out, even if she's stuck in Charming. I'm also not of the mind that someone needs to die for there to be a compelling ending -- Jax his step-father's son and has become someone I actively root against while also understanding what he's doing and why. Almost like Walter White (though Walter is a much better character). I tend to think SOA is an overrated show in terms of quality, but I do think we've reached a point where Jax has made a decision and gone over a cliff he can never recover from. He can't be saved.

90 minutes.

or a guest appearance by obama

Hmm.

Kurt writes very short scripts compared to some more, um, loquacious writers. Which is a good thing -- show, don't tell me in the script what people are thinking. So I always think it's a question of how long we're going to come in. I think that once they've (FX, Kurt) seen the cuts, they're more open to keep it as a 90 minute show since it's the highest rated show on TV.

If you told me we're a 90 minute show from now on starting next season, I wouldn't be surprised or shocked.

Best show on tv. Awesome finale. I knew how it would end, but it still hit me.

Great stuff, man. Tied up all sorts of loose ends and created tons of new problems.

Note the contrast of last year's final image (Tara behind Jax) to this year's final image (Gemma behind Jax).

Gemma supplanted Tara. It had to have been her. Who else would have given up Tara?

The episode felt fairly unimpactful to me. We have seen the "Jax looks like he's betraying a member, but it's really a double-cross!" device in previous season finales. There's not really any reason to think that Tara won't get off from the conspiracy charges, considering that (1) she is actually innocent, (2) club members are escaping from charges every season through Jax making some kind of deal that will eventually turn out to be a double-cross in the season finale, (3) they have already erased seemingly more difficult things like "permanent" nerve damage for her character, so this seems like small beans. Same deal with Clay - the fact that the assassination didn't happen in this episode seems like a guarantee that it will fail.

I appreciated that Tara finally acted with some of the sense that she used to show in early seasons to try to get out of Charming, but of course it looks like that will get reset with this arrest. You can argue that there was progress with Jax falling into evil, but to be honest, the proposition that Jax was some kind of good guy at the beginning of the series never really rang true to me. I feel like it's more that the show is acknowledging that these characters have all been evil all along.

Once again, Otto's motivations are a mystery to me. He bit off his tongue so he couldn't give a statement? Why not just not talk or tell them to fuck themselves? If he wanted to incriminate / not incriminate Tara, it seems like he could have done better through testimony. Maybe Sutter is just sick of appearing on the show.

By the way,
that tongue-cutting scene. I am shocked that got on a non-premium network. I'm also... I think I just found my threshold for what exactly makes me sick on TV.

I'm real, real fucking surprised that was not cut in any step of the process.
