it's still blocked in 10 countries including russia, which is the 3rd biggest steam market.
don't know why companies do this, but these few countries are very often blocked.

Isnt the game banned country side by some?

As for Russia pretty much all the big publishers dont want to be in the middle of that shit so Valve just doesnt set a price for the game.
Some games have no prices but can still be activated, so Valve isnt seen as being complicit in accepting money from Russia.

The long-term region lock specifically was one of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen Sony make, so it's good to see them going back on it.

There's a new law which recently came into effect requiring game companies to obtain an official license to distribute their games there. I guess Shift-Up / Sony didn't apply for the license because they thought it wasn't worth it based on how many copies they'd sell in Vietnam. That's the only thing that comes to mind on why they'd block the game in VN.

Their games are still region locked.
So Sony hasnt done a turn around, I think ShiftUp just had more power with this release cuz im sure they own the actual IP.
Every Sony game since they started this policy has random blocks for countries.

The funny thing is, Stellar Blade for PS5 is being sold everywhere in Vietnam, just the Steam version has a ban. Same for Konami games. On STeam they are non existent but every Konami game was always available on disc for consoles. Unlike Middle East where they ban games all the way through. You can still find them but not sold by a big retail store.

Let's hope this paves the way for the rest.

As I said, keeping all these regions locked for the long-term was just a bad idea, like I get putting your defenses up when you're in the middle of a mass-refund campaign, but keeping them up when it's been long over is just a bad idea imo.

Werent the region locks tied to needing to have a PSN id so any country that doesnt support PSN was auto locked out?

But games that dont even require PSN id still have the same locks.

So it must just be a Sony Publishing mandate now and if its a game Sony owns then devs have no say, ShiftUp owns the game so they can say nah mane we releasing our game wherever we can.

This needs to come from the top....cuz devs arent gonna fight when they are under Sonys thumb, for games which are just published by Sony there is hope.
The others..........

Sony published this game and they resolved the issue just fine.

The issue is organizational within Sony and thus very solvable imo.

Of course its solvable, remove the PSN requirement and remove the region locks from games.

What I mean is this game was also region locked but Sony doesnt own the IP.
When ShiftUp heard the game was region locked on Steam they said they would discuss with Sony.

Sony games as in owned by Sony, the stink we make/made online changes nothing because the developers of the game have no say in the matter.
*See Helldivers 2
They dont have the same leverage that ShiftUp has as the IP is theirs.

They're still the publisher of the game - hence why Shift Up didn't know about the region issues. Sony's publishing/distribution rights for Stellar Blade is the same as it is for HD2.

Sony probably has a vested interest in continued good faith partnership with Shift Up.

Exactly.

ShiftUp has leverage....if Sony stiffed them, they could easily go find another publisher, i doubt there was a locked in publishing deal for sequels too and there is always a work around as long as you actually own the IP....which ShiftUp does.
Sony owned studios or IPs do not.
There is no negotiating with Sony if you are Sony....whatever you decided is decided.
Im sure Arrowhead, NaughtyDog, Sucker Punk would love to argue with Sony to have the region lock lifted, but what exactly can they say when Sony owns the shit?

So as I said its a decision that has to come from the top for Sony owned games....Sony published games, the devs atleast have a say.
