Sony Gamescom 2010 Press Conference

A side thought after the fact, but the european PS3 sales figures are quite impressive.

I think last September, pre-slim, I think Sony said they were at 10m. Going by the figure given at the press conference they've added 6m to that in less than 12 months, a good deal more than sold in the US even in the same period.

Pretty much. Finland got YLE Areena, but still no VOD. :(

well, at least you will get MUBI soon.

MUBI will be available in the following countries: United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Portugal.

Though honestly, I never used the PS Video store (or any VOD). I guess it's nice if you have friends over and you don't need to go outside to rent some movies, but I prefer buying Blu-rays for under 15€. I can sell them, I can collect them, I can borrow them and I can watch them as often as I want. The audio&video quality shits on VOD and you usually get a lot of extras like additional scenes and the PiP making of stuff etc.
Depending on your country I think you also only get localized versions of the movies (i.e. no original english language).

Did they show anything from MotorStorm: Apocalypse?

They played it in front of us, and we could play it afterwards. It's Motorstorm but in a crazy city. A bit too much of stuff going on in the streets, but it played well.

Can someone give a summary?

OP sucks.

Cole from InFamous 2 got a re-design, back to the old model. New Ratchet and Resistance announced.

Everything else was E3 re-hash, but they had some cool stuff for hands-on time (including echochrome 2, which blew me away)

Gotcha.

Insomniac is getting seriously dull these days. I'm really not sure who is aching for more ratchet and resistance, but whatevs.

Thanks for this info.

This is a fact or speculation? Don't play with people's emotions.

Press will see it tomorrow, and it's playable on the showfloor, so there will be a ton of ingame footage when we are let in in 10 hours or so.

My Reaction to PSP 2 No-Show:

*Deep Breath*

Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME. How fucking inept is SCE management?! The only plausible reason I think that we have yet to see any incline of a PSP 2 or a Playstation Phone is because somehow, someone at SCE thought that a £225/$249.99/€249.99 PSP GO was actually going to be successful.

I mean fuck! I want to see some new hardware, there's no fucking reason to be holding back right now. We all know a 10 year lifecycle for the PSP is nothing but corporate spin and goodfaith PR. Right?!

*Deep Breath*

In regards to the rest of the conference, I thought we were given ample announcements and game play demonstrations. However I would have liked to hear about more of the PS2 Collections being released on the PS3.

I look forward to Ratchet and Clank: All For One and I hope that it is a budget title.

Was it the same stage as in the E3 demo?

Dude. . .TGS.

I wanted news on a new firmware update. I'm guessing that'll be TGS too.

I think so, I honestly don't remember the E3 demo. But there were buildings collapsing, people to run over and a lot of stuff going on. It looked a lot like to level from E3.

You know what? Fuck TGS! Seriously, fuck it!

First it was, yeah..It'll be at E3. E3 goes by and nothing is shown.

So then everyone says, "You know what?! they're probably waiting for GamesCom since they didn't want to be overshadowed by the 3DS."

So I waited and guess what happened? Diddly-Fucking-Squat.

Face it, if they didn't announce it today its most likely not going to be shown at TGS. If it is shown at TGS it damn well won't be released within the foreseeable future. In other words, Fall 2011 by the earliest. But hey, why should I care?! I'm not the one who is about to lose out on a multi-billion dollar market (and my spending dollars).

PSP is still relevant in Japan, i'd say it's the perfect place to reveal it's successor, no?

I think you have unrealistic expectations/view of the industries involved.

In the pure handheld market they have a viable platform that is generating profit. It isn't doing so well in the US but in other markets it appears to be doing fine. Even in the US I doubt they're losing money on the PSP.

Do you really think it would be wise for them to dump a pile of money---which would come from where, exactly?---to introduce a new handheld to replace the profitable one, saddling themselves with 2-3 red years in the hope of doing better than the PSP, eventually? How does that make sense for Sony? The PSP Go, as part of a psp product line---and perhaps as a testbed to gauge consumer interest digital distribution only---at least served a purpose and didn't require subsidized pricing.

Do you really think announcing it right after the 3DS makes sense?

As far as the phone market goes, a gaming-centric phone would be doomed to niche adoption in the US. Buying a phone that happens to be able to play games is one thing, buying one specifically for gaming is another. One is a status symbol, one is a nerd badge. Is gaming really how you want to face off versus the competition in the phone market? I doubt it.

Long story short, Sony is still recovering from the ps3/bluray launch. It isn't time to gamble on another entirely new platform.

The dark side is strong in this one. Y

ou should have known the PSP2 wasn't going to be at Gamescom, otherwise they would have had a livestream. TGS is a good time to announce it.

Actually TGS was the next step but others assumed it would have been a bit close (due to supposed October 2010 3DS launch in japan) so gamescom was picked instead.

Plus as said PSP does well in Japan so why not there?

We'll see though.

When PSP2 won't be announced at TGS what's the next major event Sony will reveal its existance so that it doesn't overshaddowed from 3DS?

why? I think this is related Sony news:

along with the Move support announcement there is now also a little info blowout about the updates/DLC for MAG in the coming months:

http://blog.mag.com/blog/2010/08/mag-moves-plus-our-new-beta-program/

Clan Deploy:
- allows clan leaders to choose any game type and queue up to 128 clan members for matches as a team

new Skill tree system:
- improves how our character customization system works
- new skills and new abilities

in-game economy system:
- allows users to earn “Credit Points” by completing objectives, finishing missions, and killing enemies. They can then spend those points to purchase:
- new weapons and gear.

also multiple character slots and more

upcoming DLC game-type, “Escalation”:
- The most frenetic MAG game mode yet, Escalation offers three brand-new faction-neutral maps that pit a total of 96 players from all three PMCs against each other simultaneously. For the first time ever, Raven, Valor and SVER will be on a single map going after the same objectives at the same time.
- maps have never-before-seen environments
- nine new weapons

all MAG players are invited to test the stuff above and more in the all-new MAG Beta program starting next week (August 24):
- To participate in the new MAG beta, all you have to do is download the client software from the PlayStation Store when it becomes available next week, insert your MAG disc into the PlayStation 3, sign-in to the beta client and… BOOM!

That's bascially what's set for release this autumn (and now during the beta available for everyone). Even more stuff is said to be planned for the future.

Shots from the new maps:

I think it's especially cool to allow everyone with a MAG disc to participate in the beta for the new stuff and addons

Wow, that is awesome stuff. I'll be putting this in the OT. With credit to you of course. :D

TGS is in late September. If they were going to reveal a PSP 2 at this event, then it would be very unlikely for Sony to release the PSP 2 within the 5 months that follow it (i.e. before the end of the fiscal year) in the region I am in (Europe).

So my complaint is two-fold; the first being the fact that we've yet to be introduced to a PSP 2 and the second being that a PSP 2 is most likely a long-way out (because we have not been introduced to it yet).

Long story short, Sony is still recovering from the ps3/bluray launch. It isn't time to gamble on another entirely new platform.

The PSP hardware and software sales are well...dead in the water right now in every region except Japan. Yes the platform is profitable but that is not enough to justify SCE to continue carrying on without a successor. This is because the PSP right now is in a position where revitalisation will be extremely expensive and difficult and that money would be better spent on a successor with a fresh image. The reason why Sony needs a healthy platform on the market is because the 3DS is coming soon. They need a platform that can protect (and maybe even expand) the current mindshare that they have carved out for themselves.

This is especially true in Japan where the PSP is the number two hardware on the market and a strong competitor against the Nitnendo DS. If SCE allows the 3DS to be released in Japan for a year without contest than the 3DS will not only hinder future market penetration of a PSP 2 (in the only region the PSP is successful) but it will also eat into potential third party software support. In other words, Sony would have pissed away future profitability and mindshare in the handheld market.

In regards to cost of launch of the PSP 2. It does not necessarily have to be as expensive as platform lanches usually are. This is because SCE does not have to follow the retarded loss-leader business model and launch a platform which is profitable/breaks even on day one. The only cost would be marketing in that particular case.

In regards to a Playstation Phone. All I can say is that convergence devices are the future and that a PSPhone would be very popular in Japan and other markets. Not to mention that if they don't act now, Apple and Microsoft will gain too strong a foothold on that market.

Yeah..I guess I did blow things out of proportion. I was just really looking forward to new hardware. I guess I'm also disappointed that it is very unlikely we'll see new hardware from Sony this year. Although a March 2011 Japan launch is still plausible with a TGS reveal.

TGS is less than a month away, Sep. 16-19. If Sony managed to keep PSP2 secret until now and reveal it there this would one of the best keeping secrets ever. And we are talking about Sony. Even Nintendo didn't manage to achieve something like this with 3DS.

PS3 Slim - 2009
Playstation Move - 2010
PSP2 - 2011?

Seems fine to me.

The PSP2 is not coming at TGS. The earliest it could possibly come out would be at next E3. There are so many PSP games coming out in Japan and the PSP is oftentimes the top selling system in Japan, I just don't see it happening

Now the PSP phone or whatever that was rumored before, I could see an announcement for that.

:lol

To people who threw a fit and cursed Insomniac for thinking R&C was being announced instead of Resistance 3, how ridiculous did you feel once they also revealed R3? Because it's really funny reading your reactions.

Good show, Insomniac.
