Tom Holland isn't even the biggest issue for me. It's Marky Mark just being himself. He didn't even need to show up for makeup because it's just Marky Mark playing an old man who doesn't act his age.
Ohhh that looks exactly like Sully.

I got that free upgrade ticket, I'm part of the problem:

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it, I dont want to watch it because the baddie girls haircut makes me feel a bit queasy. It looks like a birthing caul got caught on her head and solidified and she was like "I'm gonna own this!".

I might go see it on Thursday.

I almost went to see it today but I'll probably go Thursday. I got the free ticket from the upgrade as well.

Seems like a fun movie

Glad it's enjoying some success.

I don't get the Marky Mark haters
I like his acting if the role fits his style but still it's hard to forget that he was a thug in his youth, a racist one, who committed actual hate crimes.

Ah so he fits right in with pedowood. I think most are forgetting how nasty Hollywood actually is.

Mixed reviews from critics, but positive reviews from viewers. The fans liked it and the movie made more than its budget back opening weekend - seems like a sequel is inevitable. Great for the franchise!

What's the reverse of review bombing and when do we get the articles about how fans are inflating the user score of a shitty movie?
Its not a shitty movie. It wont win oscar but not every movie is designed for that.

My friend who had no idea of uncharted movie liked it while I just found it fine because I was comparing it with the game all the time. So i guess on its own its decent watch

Too many Oscar winning films are boring as fuck that only old people like. Give us under 50's that still have that child in us what we need. Guns, tits and explosions. In that order. Thank you!
All I was trying to say is, Sony tried to make movies were critics would give good reviews but the movies didn’t made any money!

Yeah most of my post wasn't in reply to you. I was just rambling my thoughts.

Anyone know where this is likely to end up when all is said and done? Or how much they make from steaming and the blu Ray release?

I think Sony has realized that people still like going to movie theaters while all these other morons at WB and Disney are too busy trying to make streaming a thing. Netflix made it big WHILE the box office was setting record after record. You dont need one or the other. Both can coexist. The streaming audience is basically your lazy sit at home all day audience. They would never go see the movie in its first weekend either. Now they are having trouble retaining them. Well, of course, the cheap bastards who are too cheap to pay $10 to see a movie are not going to stay subbed after they watch your $200 million movie for free.

Fucking Uncharted made more in 3 days than Matrix did in its entire run. Matrix. These morons are absolutely clueless.

Murdered someone at 14. Entered the prison system at 15 years old and spent 18 years in prison having gone through gang ranks.
Now goes around his town and the country educating the youth on the dangers of gang life and doing other humanitarian work.

Imprisoned at age 11 for murder. Been out for 5 years and is working to stay out of prison even going so far as try and get all his tattoos removed.

These guys come from broken homes in poor communities and have had the strength to turn their lives around. These are extreme examples.

Mark did nothing like this and he should be crucified even though he's spent years apologizing for his actions.

If you don't understand people can change (even in the most extreme conditions) then maybe its you who needs to GTFO.
Totally comparable to Mark Wahlberg who did a whopping 45 days in jail. Good examples. Thanks bro. Keep them coming! jfc

I saw it last night and it was pretty damn good!

I also immediately saw the vision for Sony based on their theme segment at the beginning of the movie. They showed several cuts of games from the PS lineup (God of War, TLOU2, etc.) and I said to myself.. "Sony is actually going to try being a film studio that publishes movies based on their exclusive games.." That's incredible news for Sony as they'll be able to make even more money for their games. Good times ahead.

“ In his first ever interview since the attack Johnny Trinh revealed to Mail Online he was already blind in one eye after being injured while fighting the Communists in the Vietnam War.

'I was not blinded by Mark Wahlberg,' said 59-year-old Vietnamese-born Trinh.

'He did hurt me, but my left eye was already gone. He was not responsible for that.'

In an exclusive interview with Mail Online Trinh said he is happy for Wahlberg to be given a pardon saying: 'He was young and reckless but I forgive him now. Everyone deserves another chance.

'I would like to see him get a pardon. He should not have the crime hanging over him any longer.'

Trinh added that he would like to meet Wahlberg face to face to tell him he does not bear a grudge.

'He paid for his crime when he went to prison. I am not saying that it did not hurt when he punched me in the face, but it was a long time ago”

Movie theater chains take 50% of the revenue.
Actually, they take far less than that in the opening weeks. But, let’s assume they take a huge cut for the sake of argument. Why then is the rule of thumb 2x budget to break even? And what does “break even” mean in this context?
The general rule of thumb is a movie has to earn at least double its production budget in order to break even.
Screenrant says $240m. Are they incorrect?

That man is a class act. I dont think I could be as forgiving. Of the two, Wahlberg should want to meet to apologise for his actions.

This is what they say:

The general rule of thumb is a movie has to earn at least double its production budget in order to break even.
With this in mind, the target number for Uncharted is around $240 million globally. Since the film is a theatrical exclusive, it doesn't have any other sources of revenue to lean on for the time being (i.e. Disney+ Premier Access)

This is partially true. The marketing budget for movies AND games is typically the same as the production budget. It's why you see those inflated $100 million figures for games because they also include the marketing budget in the total cost of the game.

So if the movie cost $120 million to produce, it likely has a $120 million marketing budget as well. With theaters taking 50% of the revenue (though the only get to keep 25% in the first weekend), it will need $480 million to break even.

The good thing is that movies continue to make money on DVD, TV rights and streaming rights so everything after that $480 million is pure profit. When i worked at bestbuy, dvds had no discount. Bestbuy basically makes a dollar from DVDs, all the other $19 goes straight back to Sony.

What people forget is that Sony Pictures 2000 -10 era was filled with Oscar nominated movies that nobody cared to watch or even knew about. Sony pictures Classic lost importance. Can we blame them? ... People choose action over substance.
Oscar needs drama.
The only one from Sony to have a chance for Oscar is a TLOU movie.

Uncharted was from beginning not supported to be Oscar contender but more like a The Rock movie.

And seems like it archived that pretty well.
People are liking it and I will probably like… can’t wait to watch when it releases in Brasilian’s city in the future.

Anyone else notice how the main theme song was absent from the movie?
Kind of like how it was also from UC4.

What is with that?
I know in the movie they kinda had it play (in a slightly different way) but it wasn't fully embraced.

Movie critics are the most unreliable source of information when it comes to how enjoyable a movie is.

I haven't read the thread, totally not, but didn't Sully blind a Taiwanese man? If you ask me, those are some BAD vibrations. Feel it feel it.

$200m to break even? Hell no. That's not how it works.

A general rule is a studio takes 60% of box office domestically and 20-40% internationally, with China (one of the biggest markets) being at the very low end.

If the budget (not including marketing) is $120m $200 won't get them close to breaking even. And marketing costs do seem to be pretty big here.

Marketing

It's off to a good start but just had to put this in perspective

am pretty sure Sony know the numbers its doing and going to do to announce they gonna make a second

also with Whalberg, has he done anything racist since? you call him racist and yes he did something pretty bad when young but the guy seems to of turned his life around. people are capable of doing that and regretting their past

The thing is, when I do a web search on “how much does a movie need to make to break even,” I get lots of results saying 2x, and a few saying 2.5x. Nowhere do I see anyone saying 4x. So what is your source for this new 4x rule?

Why do you need source when I already explained it? It's simple math. If what I said makes no sense to you then take it or leave it. I dont have a gun to your head.

This is just the Tom Holland train. One of the only "movie stars" that will bring out younger people these days, regardless of the IP or movie. Sounds like the movie is decent though. Future Sony IP in film will depend on casting.

Here is an article from Variety about No Time to Die to put things into perspective about budget costs and breaking even.

While that film cost $250m to produce, Variety is estimating it will need to make between 800-900m to break even. So that's between 3.2 and 3.6 times its production budget. Not quite 4x, but close on the high end.

Uncharted probably hasn't had the same type of marketing spend as 007, but it was likely still sizeable (lots of tv spots, promotion with Hyundai, NBA, Regal Cineams, AMC, etc, a fucking app, etc.).

And while Uncharted has yet to open in one of the biggest markets in China, the studio takes a much, much smaller cut from the Chinese box office and Uncharted only has four days of showings before Batman drops.

So while it's off to a good start, we'll need to wait to see how things play out.
