Sony: Preorders could’ve been smoother; more units coming

Yeah because some GameStop's only got like 10 orders and 8 of them being physical, I can see each GameStop having at least 30+

Haha, like this will change anything. "Stay tuned for more preorders!!!" Get real. Scalpers will be the first in line and continue to grab all that they can. Sites will crash. Carts will continue to auto-empty. It'll be the same old shit over and over again.

When demand exceeds supply, expect issues and expect retailer websites not used to the horde mode traffic to crash. Simple.

They wanted to capitalize on the event. It was a sound strategy that I would have agreed on too. I don't want interest to wane on some later date just cause some folks need planning. Even in that instance you wouldn't satisfy everyone. So send a PR apology for those bitching (rightfully) but it's what it's.

Honestly I wish Sony or any of the big 3 wouldn't allow these multiple preorders.

I was hoping Sony would tie preorders down to a PSN account, so people cut down on this bullshit.

Chill out, bro. If I get a second pre-order then I am cancelling my Amazon pre-order. It's not like I am hogging up two for myself or I'm some fucking scalper. Jesus.

Not sure why people place so much blame on SONY, Microsoft is literally having to threaten retailers to stop them from doing what was done with PS5, not sure SONY should be expected to do that.

It's just a vidya console, sit tight and they will be available at some point.

Too late Sony you already pissed off alot of people and probably lost some customer to Xbox

P.s i already got my pre order through BB

Yea but then they have an xbox...

That's really Big of Sony. 2006 Sony would never. Also this pre-order hype played right into thier hand, PS5 is selling out until Q2 2021. Coming from an Xbox fan

I just don't understand how things went to shit so fast. Your retail partners have to have a little discipline, or at least be mildly competent.

We're not even talking about the launch here, just pre-orders. I don't know why Sony itself would get wrapped up in it. Set your release dates, let your retail partners offer and manage pre-orders independently if they want, and sell the console on the day it's released.

It will. Either bb or Amazon will break street date and Ms won't do a thing about it just like Sony did.

I know Microsoft gave a date and a time but there's still going to be a rush to get pre-orders. And like you said some places will break it early to get a jump on the others.

eBay has some awesome listings of PS5.
One guy (not shown) was selling his Sony Invite this morning.

The best part is the limited edition ps5 drawing($450) and.....$30 shipping 😆

IDL about that, MS has given an exact time and date unlike Sony. Sony didn't give any time or anything at the end of their showcase. I think retailers will respect MS in that they gave an exact time and date. Two GameStops I called today said that they would be opening at 10AM on Tuesday for pre-orders for the XSX. Websites will probably be bolstered and hopefully we will not see the clustefuck that was the PS5 pre-order situation. Then again I could be wrong and we will see it all over again.

Looking forward to more posts like

"I secured 3 the first round and only 1 this time, now to decide which one to keep"

And

"I got two of them. One for me and one for my brother"

Six hours later

What a free for all that was.

When Keighley did that controller review and talked to that Sony exec, the exec said preorder dates would be announced early.

Looks like Sony turn the tap on asap (next day after the showcase) to get ahead of Xbox preorders the week after.

This is 100% truth!

So I was thinking about this today. Is it really Sony's fault? Retailers jumped the gun and I think it is because they realize sony's loyalty pre-order was a test of the system. "Let's have people pre-order directly from us and see how it goes." (Honestly I wish they would have tested this sooner and order directly from the ps4 but I digress) I think walmart was like "f!@# it what are they going to do, not ship us any consoles next time?"

Now that Sony knows the system works I see the majority of sales coming direct and maybe from the ps5 itself. How ideal would that be?

Just to be clear. The night of the event, when retailers rushed to open pre-orders, that was on them.
But Sony was planning on opening pre-orders the next day anyway.
They wanted chaos to hype the console more. Having said that, it would never have worked if there wasn't a high demand in the first place.

Their communication in general "could've been smoother". Instead, both Sony and MS were playing chicken throughout the year with fucking unspectacular drip-feed of streams. I know that Covid is a problem but the PS5 and XSX launches were handled as if both companies never did any consumer hardware before. And it boggles the mind that the PR departments of both companies think that letting Phil Spencer and Jim Ryan speak is a good idea.

Its certainly a different Sony to the days of Andrew House and Shawn Layden

Sonys tweet is completely bullshit.
What are they planning to do? Sure, producing more units, but this will take time...

Or did they found 1 million units which they forgot in a warehouse at the Airport?

Fact is, this thing will be hard to get for 90% of the potential customers till the end of 2020 even longer.

The demand is fucking huge!

I wonder if they have had less demand than what they expected for the direct preorders with them in the US. I really wouldn't be surprised if most people who they emailed didn't take them up on it because they already got a preorder with another retailer who put them up before Sony's email came through.

Sony don't feel bad...This is what happens when everyone wants the pipe.....Demand is so huge, the customers get upset when they can't get it....

This response is only about the high demand...

Gaming popularity became much more mainstream during the life cycle of PS4. That console was wildly popular as well. It had games for everyone as well.

Add to that, a pandemic that saw game sales increase as a result... Hunger for next gen after 7 years for the core audience...

Let's add social media and influencers...how much bigger social media has become In everyone's lives over the last 7 years. It helped put the desire for a PlayStation (or an XSS/XSX) out there as well. People clamoring that they are going to get one or pre order one. Well... if all these people want one... I better get in on that.. kind of mentality because social media says I'm gonna miss out.

So many reasons for the instant sell out. These are just part of it.

more like ppl don't be smart enough to keep an eye on retailers
It's not peoples fault. It's everyone else who bought one cause they're all scalpers. All of them. It's the retailers fault cause their websites didn't wait for people who weren't paying attention to order. It's Sony's fault for not giving 14 days notice of preorders. It's not like people who wanted one could reasonably expect that the PS5 was going to go on sale sometime before release date. You know just like the PS4 Pro and the PS4 and the PS3.
No it's not peoples fault.
Everyone else is to blame. And people shouldn't learn to deal with being patient.

Imo Sony should put pressure on stores to allow 1 console purchase/reservation per 1 customer. They're still going to end up sold out, but at least people won't be pissed on the scalpers.

I'm sure a lot of these retailers will have enough of them collecting dust in their warehouse, you wont have to worry about lack of availability.

If they gave a time scalpers would have won more. If anything this benefited people. When they announce a time for the next round people are going to have a worse experience.

it's all rather silly. I missed a ps4 preorder last time and I got one in a bestbuy first week of January. If you are buying for your kids for Christmas there is no reason you cannot wait two months.

The tweet was in good taste. They acknowledged the issue, which was admirable. Its not about placing blame. More preorders coming is a great thing.

Not sure why people place so much blame on SONY, Microsoft is literally having to threaten retailers to stop them from doing what was done with PS5, not sure SONY should be expected to do that.
It's an empty threat. No way MS will deny them consoles and piss off those that did pre-order.

Sony shouldn't have allowed general preorders until they got the people they sent emails out to first. On top of that opening it up a day early should have repercussions on the retailers who broke the street date. And to finish up nobody should be able to order more than one on the initial release that should be common sense. It is absolutely Sony's fault here but they don't care as long as it sells.

This is a great response by Sony. They need to hit Walmart with a brick for starting it. The fact that more supply is coming also makes me feel good that my preorder won't get canceled.

At least they're shipping enough consoles, it's quite rough on the other side.

Easily secured my preorder + Pulse 3D in store instead of online BS.
