Sony reveals PlayStation Vue streaming service.

The Playstation branding is interesting, let's see how this goes.

And the X1 comparisons are hilarious.

Vue is a service that has been introduced a year into the PS4's life and is not limited to the console.

And it actually offers content instead of just connecting to your existing set up and acting as a UI of sorts.

Also, at least it's clear now why Sony don't want EA Access on their system: they're worried that between the choices of subscription services, they might lose out to EA. Limit the number of outside subscription services, and people become more likely to subscribe to their own.

NY Preview THIS MONTH? Sign me up! Wonder if the preview is temporary or permanent.

I'm on one year subscriptions of Netflix and Hulu that are ending this month.

Crazy. Sony continues to move ahead with new ideas. OK, well, this idea isn't that new but it's a new initiative. This sounds like a step in the right direction for cord cutters. Baby steps.

Zune was hardware, like Xbox is hardware.

Zune was also the name of their music and video store, along with the software used to access them. Xbox Music and Xbox Video are really just rebrands of Zune (there used to be a Zune app for the Xbox 360). The Xbox Music Pass I have was a Zune Music Pass prior to the rebrand, and I live in the UK where the Zune device wasn't even released.

The fact that I'm explaining this kinda proves my point.

Zune did not have cloud matching or pandora radio playlists, and was limited to windows and zune...xbox is on more devices, going more laong with Microsoft's platform agnostic stance of old and as of late with software. This PlayStation service is similar in that it's also seemingly platform independent. The problem is, people associate the brand with the hardware. Xbox music with mainstream users is no more successful than zune was, which backs my point. The brand recognition hasn't helped the service. It's probably hurt it because the average user probably thinks they need an xbox to use it. Point is, calling it PlayStation may hurt rather than help

When they say NY, do they mean the Tri-State area, or just NY itself? Being next door in NJ I would love to check this out myself.

Someone on Page 1 mentioned they need to stop the misspelling of words. I tend to agree, but I think VUE kind of works actually. It is a new hue of view.

In order for this to work for me it would need Cartoon Network and a way to record the shows so I could watch them whenever. If everything's streaming real-time that would be a requirement, if it's just VOD then I'd still want to be able to record the shows since you have no control over whether they will just disappear when some contract is up.

For my wife, it'd have to have ESPN or it's a complete non-starter.

Sony has balls to put out a cable service for their PS4 when they don't even have a remote.

Yeah, this too. I want a real remote, no app garbage.

We've established Vue is an actual word (in French)

I doubt they'll give you anyway to archive shows.

Well, insofar as this is related to my PS4, I have zero interest in it. I'm good with Netflix and Hulu, and I doubt this will be competitively priced against those products.

But the "PlayStation" branding is very interesting. Makes me wonder about Sony's feelings on the health of "Sony" as a brand.

Eh. I'll see if it's any better than Hulu Plus and Netflix

They aren't really comparable.

How are they not comparable? This is all about the manner in which people consume tv media. Hulu is a product catering specifically to people who don't want to consume tv in a traditional manner. Traditional vs. Hulu style tv consumption is in constant competition. This sort of product, just like other cable tv packages, directly competes with entertainment offerings like Hulu and Netflix.

Zune did have online playlists. I think it used to be called Smart DJ or something along those lines. Xbox Music also didn't have cloud matching for a long time, it wasn't really part of the rebrand, more just a feature being added later.

Good point on the move across to non-MS ecosystems though. I forgot you couldn't use Zune anywhere else.

This is what I thought. However I have Cogeco as a internet provider, my question is am I going to get charged extra? Does streaming use a lot of GB?

On a single stream you're looking at 5Mbps (Netflix recommended for HD) may be higher:

625KB/sec
36MB/min
2.15GB/hour

(Of course dependent on video format/streaming system they use)

An unlimited connection is a must it seems.

Not bad at all. I just hope the packages are variable in size and cost because I would gladly dump ESPNs and a lot of the fringe channels in exchange for an appropriate cost replacement for Comcast.

What this needs is very robust app support on all devices with Chromecast abilities so that every TV can be a conceivable recipient for very very low cost of entry.

I doubt they'll give you anyway to archive shows.

Well in that case this will never work for my family and I'd wager many others. The DVR has become a necessity for lots of people due to busy schedules. Sometimes my backlog builds up (especially in the fall) and it may take me an entire year to watch things that I've recorded. Time-shifting that content is essential.

Of course, if everything was VOD and content was never removed from your selection then this would be a moot point, but we all know that's not how the industry currently works.

Yeah, internet companies in Canada are absolute garbage. They used to have them for free in terms of how much you could use a while back, now they have so many limitations.

And without ESPN this does nothing for me at all.

Come on everyone, just let me buy my sports online :(

I wish they would spin off ESPN a la HBO Go. That way they can lower the prices on cable, where people hate the cost, and offer improved features for actual subscribers, like multi-screens, different camera angles and whatnot, a la Red Button in UK and some of the ESPN3 stuff.

I imagine that's where we are headed anyway though.

A sports streaming service is pretty unrealistic at this point in the US (especially local sports). If they were to sell them a la carte/ or subscription base you would be paying around $25 a month just for a sports package.

Local sports programming is outrageously expensive. In the tri-state area, MSG costs more than any other station (sans ESPN). Add to that YES and SNY and you are probably looking at $15 just there and that doesn't include ESPN, Fox Sports or NBCSports.

Disney and Time Warner will not be coming anytime soon because they own the only must-see live programming people care about......SPORTS BROADCASTING!!!!

comcast doesn't enforce their cap. i've done 500gb in a month through comcast before. they can definitely handle more bandwidth. bandwidth caps are a money making scheme more so than a network capacity issue

Yes they do. I have to pay $10 for every 50 GBs I go over 250GBs.

Sounds OK to me. I want cable just to watch the St. Louis Cardinals basically. I'd pay $50 a month to MLB just for that. Add Netflix and the occasional VOD movie from Apple TV and it's still loads cheaper than the $150 a month or so you pay for most full fledged cable packages.

Comparing this to the TV TV TV SPORTS TV mantra of the XB1 reveal is pretty desperate, but whatever floats some people's opinion (or bias) I guess...

Now if they can fit in AMC (I know it'd be a long shot given how greedy that channel has been, cf the Dish and DTV shenannigans over their top rated shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead) and the Disney channels (ABC, and the Disney Jr/ XD for the kids), it'd be a near perfect fit for our household...
If the price's right ... might bite when my 2 year contract with DTV is due (in about a year).

Yep, because all the subscribers that don't watch ESPN subsidize those who do. How is that fair?

I cut all that stuff out long ago when I realized I was paying $2 per hour of TV I was watching. Not worth it for me, especially since I was watching a lot of network TV. So I got Hulu+ and an OTA indoor HD antenna instead. Already had Netflix. I'm saving around $70 per month from my old cable plan and am perfectly happy with my TV options.

Don't know what the pricing on Vue will be, but I expect $40, minimum. Would be happy to be pleasantly surprised.

If you are paying that much for cable you are doing it wrong, assuming you have Fios in your area. I haven't paid more than $100 after taxes and fees in about 4 years.

Here's a link on slickdeals on how to get a deal now. http://slickdeals.net/f/7342320-ver...9-mo-with-2-yr-agreement-or-other-options?v=1

Buy sports online? I think every major league has that.

Local sports are blacked out.

If you don't like sports, you should only buy the most basic cable service on top of your internet package. That's assuming you really need live TV at all.

This sounds interesting, but I don't watch much live tv. So far, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime have met my needs perfectly. I don't watch sports ever, so we don't have a cable subscription. We just pay for Internet.

As for people laughing it up about TV TV TV, it's all about the timing.

As a gamer, when new hardware is announced, what excites you the most about that new hardware? The gaming stuff, right? You geek out over reveals of returning franchises, and new IPs. It's why hype threads for everything from E3, to TGS, to Nintendo Direct generates so many hype threads.

As a gamer, what's the worst thing you can imagine happening when new hardware is revealed? I don't know for sure, but I can imagine a hardware reveal that focuses on nothing but media features will rub hardcore gMers,of which NeoGAF has a large community comprised of, would rub them the wrong way and piss some folks off.

Sony revealed the PS4 perfectly. It was about games and more games. People knew the media shit was a part of the platform, but the focus was largely on games. I think we're pretty clear on Sonys strategy for games. Next year we have Uncharted PS4, Ratchet PS4, The Order, and Bloodborne, all from Sony (and From Software). They haven't abandoned their gaming focus for TV TV TV.

It's all in the timing, and with the PS4 having such good press and love from consumers, now is the perfect time to leverage that heat for other money making ventures. The audience that is interested in this type of service will be excited for it. The gamers will still get their games. I mean, shit, I can rattle off a dozen or more games hitting PS4 exclusive and multiplat. As a hardcore gamer, I don't somehow feel abandoned by a service that isn't 100% catering to what I want. I can always, I don't know, pass on it? Crazy, right?

Sigh. I can't wait for Bloodborne...

How about we get PSN to run an entire month without crashes and launch failures before we move on to other product lines, mmk?

This could be great. I cut the cord back in Jan, but if the price was right and content was there that I wanted to watch, I'd subscribe.

Playstation +, Playstion Now and Playstation VUE.

I hope those serive get connected somehow

Ps+ User free trial on Ps Vue or something like that.
