IPS panels generally have greater viewing angles and better colours but weaker blacks and contrast levels compared to VA panels.
EDIT: I have the 49" and I find that having some sort of bias lighting fitted behind the TV helps with the black and contrast levels during night time viewing. Also helps alleviate eye strain so that's a nice bonus too.

So any suggestions on what my picture settings should be? I turned the sharpness level and color vividness to high, but didn't mess with the black level since maxing them out seemed to wash out the screen. Trying to get the most out of HDR; tried it with Ratchet and Clank first and it was kind of like what Digital Foundry had seen--it didn't exactly look mind blowing but turning off HDR suddenly makes all the colors look wrong and muted.

Interesting! I don't quite understand how he knows all of this or what he means. My TV always switched to HDR in game mode!

If you care about black levels, don't go IPS
Game mode had HDR before the patch so I am not sure what he's on about. Yes, HDR should be set to auto at all times.

See Rtings settings page for this TV. Your settings should be identical with 2 exceptions:
1. Should be game mode not custom
2. You can add clearness.
For the love of all that is holy do not crank up the sharpness or color. Or black level...
PS4 Pro should be set to all auto.

Mine rebooted out of nowhere last night while I was streaming Ratchet and Clank.
I updated the firmware after it recovered. Hopefully that's all it needed.

Does everything I read about this TV on rtings also go for the 55" version available in Europe? Is it the exact same TV with 10 bit panel and everything? Because if so I think I'll buy that sucker this weekend.

KD43XD8005 is the European equivalent to the TV linked in the first post. As long as you get this one in the box, you're good
Media Markt is just terrible all around so I'd double check that lolMine is on the latest firmware. Judging by the clock it stayed in a crashed state, unable to reboot itself for over 10 hours until I pulled the plug! I appreciate the extra features but it's a bit scary having a TV with an extra possible point of failure.
There has been a few requests for picture settings, so I am going to cross post from another forum entirely. Hope this helps some folks out.
Here are my dark room PS4 Pro 43" X800D calibration settings.
Picture Mode: Game
Auto Picture Mode: Off
Light Sensor: Off
Menu: Advanced Settings:
Submenu:Brightness
Brightness: Min (Min - 5 Ok; required to be low to hit 100 nits for SDR; use MAX for HDR to hit peak brightness)
Contrast: 95 (need to drop to 90 for HDR content)
Gamma: 0 (can be MAX for HDR)
Black Level: 50
Black Adjust: Off
Adv. Contrast enhancer: off
Submenu: Color
Color: 47
Hue: 0
Color temperature: expert 1
Adv. color temperature: Here I have calibrated with HCFR using an i1Display Pro and do not want to post the RGB corrections (they will not be correct for your set)

For HDR games, users are reporting everything from 8-bit 4:2:0 to 12-bit 4:2:2, just remember, HDR is always in LIMITED video range!
This can be due to an EDID handshake issue, most probably, although I do have my own conspiracy theory about it lol.
And thats it, and inFAMOUS Second Son is stunning in HDR, particularly with Delson's neon powers, this game in particular should not be washed out in the least bit.

Here is what I do for setting HDR brightness. Start the game in at a calibrated SDR picture level. Be in an area of a very average picture brightness, not in the dark or staring into the sun.Use this average picture luminosity (how bright the screen is in your memory - I know not perfect, but you can get it very close) and when you switch on HDR< adjust the backlight (called brightness for Sony) until these luinocities appear to match.
Remember, SDR and HDR should ideally have the same average picture luminosity with content below 100 nits!
EDIT 2: I now have some HDR test patterns and have been messing around with some HDR settings. Will update fully when I take some data next time.

I had some audio drops and random black screens on Titanfall 2 the first time I tried to play it.
I haven't had any issues since though.

How is the downscaling from this TV if you are watching movies or playing games that are 1080p? I have no intention on buying the PS4 Pro.
No issues with the Pro, it works quite well.
If you are not buying a Pro, I would wait another 1/2 year for next years models.
So I see theach little grey icon for HDR when I go into Picture adjustment under game mode while on my Pro. So I can assume it's in hdr and working correctly? Game mode just seems so dull and washed out compared to the "standard" picture setting. Could I try to match the color and brightness settings to be more like standards'set or does that defeat the purpose of hdr?

I typically leave the input on my ps4. When I turn the TV on it displays the input and the display info stays on screen unless I press a button on the remote, even after booting the ps4. Simple, small, but nagging thing. Is there a setting I'm missing to reduce the timer oh this, if that's even what it is.
You could always use Standard and see how you feel about the input lag. I personally never tried.
Some people reported the latest update from yesterday or the day before yesterday fixed this. Check for updates if you are in the US. Other region updates are usually pushed a bit after.
I personally never ran into this problem, I turn off my Nvidia Shield, pull the plug on my multi-socket and the next time I turn on the TV + Shield it works just fine. Perhaps some standby issue?

Why's that? I have absolutely zero intention in buying a TV that costs over 700,- euro's.
I got one TV that is over 6 years old and it is showing signs of decay (random TV shutdown etc)
So this is basically not worth it if I watch plenty of Netflix, watch movies and game on my original PS4?
I only suggest to wait as prices will come down, and the HDR will g t better. This set only outputs less than half of the recommended bits for peak brightness with HDR material. HDR10 recommends 1000 nits, but content is being mastered to 10,000 nits. HDR is incredible in terms of benefit to image quality, but it hasn't fully arrived yet. What we have in 2016 sets- even the best ones- is only a fraction of what's to come in the next few years in terms of image quality.

I understand your sentiment but isn't this exactly the same every single year? You buy a TV, 6 months later there is something better along the line.
Many times it will be incrementally better, yes. This technology is advancing so rapidly that you will see generational leaps in IQ within 6 months to a year.
It's not just peak brightness that might see 10-25x increase, but also filling out the volume of the WCG, expect possible 10x improvement, as well as support for higher framer rates. Then, you can begin thinking about HDR12 with dynamic metadata which is likely introduced within 6 months time.
This type of rapid improvement hasn't been seen in TV image quality technology, maybe ever.
Do you want us to convince you to get one or not get one? The television is great even with 1080p. The goal though is a nice 4K set that can do HDR for a decent price. Netflix works great. 1080p looks great as well. Sony has the best upscaling technology on the market. Cable and satellite low bitrate and high compressed junk looks bad, but Netflix at 1080p looks amazing.
So if you want the tv, buy it. You are getting a good 4K set with some HDR that will sort of help with future proofing. But like was said, as you do not have a PS4 Pro and plan to stay at 1080p, if you can hold off, you can get better sets next year.
Game mode has always looked different for almost ten years. Because it mimics the custom or cinema modes as opposed to the standard or vivid modes which use processing and intensive picture quality improvements. This is why there is more lag. I know what you mean. Sometimes you want games to look that crisp and bright color etc. I would still use game mode, but you can alter some settings to try and mimic standard or vivid modes.

The basis of my questions is still exactly that; does this TV provide a great enough image quality if I purely just watch 1080p content and play games on my original PS4.
I was already looking for another TV so I was leaning on a great 1080p set or take the plunge for this 4k TV set even though I know there are going to be improvements down the line.
Thanks, yeah I know it turns off alot of post processing but I didn't think it would look so different color/brightness wise. On my old vizio I think game/pc was the default/standard setting just with all post effects hard coded to "off". I'll see if I can match it by tweaking colors. I've never been great when it comes to color settings. Is there an app or website I can go to for calibration? Most require you to burn a bluray or DVD which I don't have access to at the moment.
Yes, you are getting some of the best 1080p upscaling technology on the market, bested only by the flagship Sony televisions which have better upscalers. As you said your last tv is over 6 years old, you will be blown away with just how much better everything is. 1080p, 4k, the latest Android 6.0 TV system etc.
I would advise you not to waste any more money on 1080p which is a dying resolution. Any sort of 4K and HDR television will future proof you far better ao you get another 5-6 years etc.
I have Joe Kane's DVEssentials blu-ray, the issue is, most calibration discs and tools will give you a more natural and realistic picture quality. If you feel game mode is already dull, they wouldn't help you much. Put the settings to cinema home or custom and see how you like it. That is what Rtings and a lot of calibration tools try to go for. A warm picture, free of artificial enhancements.
Seeing so much people here and in other threads/forums having difficulties setting it up, I wonder how the general public will fare...
See I think that's where I'm confused. As I understand it hdr is supposed to be all about "natural" colors. I can kind of see that warmness you describe in game mode but at the same time I believe hdr is also about having a much wider array of available colors? So I guess I was just expecting more vivid colors in general b/c of that I think. I'm going to try toggling hdr on and off while in standard picture when i get home and see if that clears up my confusion.
For me, and what i can notice is all about the wide range of colors. In U4 clouds are just not white, they have different tints of color giving it shape. Darkers are usually darkers, and lights are usually lighter. Some of the demos they had at Best Buy were pretty good at showing off what HDR really does.
HDR does make a big difference for me so far. It just gives another level of quality to the image. Its really something else. Very happy with the X800D HDR output.

Regarding HDR content, is it a case of the TV automatically increasing the colour range of my Blu Rays, streaming content etc. or would I have to buy specific HDR content?
Yeah I agree but remember HDR is independent of game mode. Game mode is just a way to turn off or alter what makes the picture really really great to keep input lag down.
Put your television to Vivid or Standard and then watch HDR content and see the difference. Just the limitations of gaming. I would say that unless you are playing a twitch game, shooter or fighter and input lag is paramount, play a game like Ratchet and Clank on Vivid or Standard with HDR and see the difference.
It has to be specific. You can force HDR on, but everything will look blown-out as a result (in my experience anyway). The TV will autodetect HDR on inputs 2 and 3 once you enable Enhanced HDMI in the TV's settings.
First Light in HDR looks fantastic. Forza Horizon 3 in HDR kinds looks like ass to me though. I think a lot of it will come down to how each individual developer implements it. I'm sure over time it will get better and better.
Played Ratchet this morning, it really looks nice.
Just got my second 49" X800D (the first had light bleed) and coming from a Plasma TV, I'm not sure if it's the IPS, or just LCD's in general, but there just seems to be a shimmer, or cloudiness about the darker scenes.
I haven't done much tinkering with the settings yet, and most of this is from impressions of HDR Uncharted, but I'm a little discouraged. I got the TV for 1050 CDN, all in - an amazing price but I'm still a little skeptical.
Some people are raving about this TVs blacks, others are trashing the contract and blacks. I'm so confused haha.

Coming from a plasma you will see worde blacks, these are edge lit LED-LCD televisions. IPS itself has worse blacks than VA panels. So you will see worse black levels in relation to the 43" version and with other VA panels but better viewing angles etc.

So 33-35ms in game/4k/hdr - seems a little high to me.
That is typical for these 4K HDR sets, for now at least. There are worse out there.
