Soulcalibur V |OT| Go home and be a salary man!

I'm like a Hadouken, down-right Fierce!
I do not really get this, honestly. There are MUCH easier options to "herp derp", just choose one of the launcher-happy Patro/Pyrrha/Omega Pyrrha chars and mash it more safely, a bit more faster. Xiba hits a skill cap quite fast, if they are not using their brains. But whatever, people like staffs , news at 11. :D

Well, it's easy to call a character herp-derp when you're a scrub... :)

How do online Rank Points work? Up until E1 I got points whether I won or lost, but I just lost a match at rank D5 to someone ranked E1 or E2 and I didn't get any. Will I still get points if I lose to someone of a similar or higher rank, or will I never get points for losing again? :p

I have been out of the game since Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast. Are there any longtime vets that can speak to the types of changes that have been made to the gameplay since then? Is it largely the same?

Lots of Xiba's just like there were tons of Kiliks in SCIV. Trying to herp derp their way to wins.

I loved "herp derp" Kiliks. I also loved people who thought Kilik could only "herp derp" and that only noobs played him. I then proceeded to whoop those people's asses with my Kilik and make them rage. :D

I still haven't tried all of the characters yet, but I'm liking Xiba and Patsuka. Do I really need to learn just frames with Patsuka to be competent? That's the only thing I don't like about him because I suck at that :|

Also, what are some basic strategies with those two?

About Alpha Pat, it is kinda vital to learn at least some of his JF moves. 1B:B is really good, as is the FC 3B:B/2143B:B :) indicating a JF). I still can't do the agB, 1A:A:A or 2143aB JFs consistently, they're hard as hell.

the most vital thing to get down from everything I've been taught by the OG Setsuka/current Alpha Pat players is the 2143aB. Even if you can't do the JF version, be able to do that move when you need it. It punishes a ton of moves and you can hit it in a lot of combos. Check out the forum on 8WayRun for some good info:

Main changes are:

- Gameplay is faster.
- Quick Steps (double-tap in any direction) are a lot like the step in SC2, and allow you to dodge a lot of stuff.
- Guard Impacts are now Back/Forward and A+B+K as opposed to Back/Forward and Guard. Big change for people used to old GIs.
- Overall, the game rewards offense over defense by a LOT, unlike the older games.

Trying a few character in training mode.

Is it just me or Natsu's damage is crazy. She is use her unblockable or the low smoke stomp, into Critical Edge, then link to that air throw for 143 damage.

Ivy is just.... what did they do to her? She lost most of her moves.

Ivy always changes from game to game. Ivy is still strong IMO. Just gotta find out her new 'style'...

She has some strong things. Check out the SS replays on Team sp00ky's archive. LIJOE was doing some good stuff with her.

After a couple days with the game, I think these are the most fun characters:

  1. ZWEI
  2. Nightmare
  3. Raphael
  4. Viola
  5. Alpha Patrick

The more I play him, the more it seems like ZWEI... kinda sucks. I dunno. He's way fun though.

Been using a lot of Ezio lately, anyone have any advice for me as far as how to deal with... more rangey characters like Siegfried? I tend to just play it safe and sidestep a lot using some of Ezio's longer reaching moves (I'm bad at fighting game terminology, forgive me, I'm new!) But, beyond that, I'm finding it difficult to keep the pressure on those characters and often times I get really easily confused on what's going to hit low and what's going to hit high (sort of a common issue across most characters for me like... Xiba).

Also, any advice in general on how to play Ezio is welcome tooooo. I used to play a lot of SCII and SCIII (button mashed mostly, but now I'm actually trying to learn stuff). I'm finding it a little difficult to perform most of Ezio's moves on my dualshock 3 controller if only because I mainly use the d-pad right now. Should I just be spending a crap ton of time in Training, or what? Because I tend to get bored easily just trying to learn the motions and moves repeatedly on a standing CPU.

Do you get anything in this game for beating Arcade with all the characters?

EDIT: While I'm at it, do the stages have anything to do with the story? I know this is misc stuff people probably don't care about, just wondering.

I may drop Raph if I can't consistently confirm off of uu/dd b. It's his best side-step move and I use it a lot. You can get a quick bbb or f bbb or even CE after it but if not you just go flailing off and half your life is gone because of it.

I care a ton. But as far as I can tell, no.
Unfortunately.

Arcade seems pretty random who you fight (though you can choose Europe or Asia if you want). Sometimes if you fight a character that has something to do with yours, the start/end of fight dialog might be unique (for example, Natsu fighting Leixia). But other than that, Arcade mode seems to just be a way to grind player level.

The single player is really bare bones.

I'm in agreement, she's the quickest character in the game, but does damage like Nightmare. Did Taki do so much last game? o_0

Ah that sucks.

I skipped out on SC III-IV and the tower stuff in SCIV seemed really damn cool, was hoping for more of that stuff in SCV, but what they've replaced it with so to speak is weird, the quick battle.

Welcome to my life. She is complete trash and like the true masochist I am, I continue to play as her because I'll be damned if I play any of these overpowered new characters just to stay competitive.

I think I made a mistake by drinking 4 cokes and a coffee during the superbowl but I'll probably be up all night playing SC5 and that's despite all the people quitting when I'm about to beat them. I suck but I'm having fun online.

No. Taki was absolute garbage in SC4.

Taki's damage output was similar in SC3, though.

I do agree that Natsu does way too much damage. Clean hits are a really stupid mechanic.

I don't know about trash. But she is once again a totally different character. Having to pay meter for SS and that insane input for the CS are rather disappointing.

GAF, should I try to cheap (if there even is a way) my way through the final parts of quick battle? It's all A level opponents from here and the CPU is godlike. I've spent like 3 hours today against them and I've beaten only 1. I feel like it's making my character (Raph) better but the AI makes like no mistakes. Are humans this good? I've fought a few amazing players in ranked but none felt like they were machines who knew everything I was going to do.

The AI in this game input reads like a mofo, might as well try and find a way to cheap it out if you want to keep your sanity.

I take back what I said about Z.W.E.I.

In the right hands, he is a beast. He has some crazy lockdown shit.

My most used characters:

1) Ezio Auditore
2) Tira
3) Xiba
4) Leixia
5) Ivy

Characters that have no hope of being mastered by me:

1) Z.W.E.I (seriously how the hell do you use this guy)
2) Voldo
3) Aeon
4) Pyrrha

Characters I didn't think I'd be into but surprisingly am:

1) Mitsurugi
2) Yoshimitsu
3) Hilde

Her tech traps leads to some insane damage without using any meter as well. In the 165+ damage range from a counter hit WR K. Not even Mitsu does that type of damage, even with meter. I've been working on tech traps all day, and I haven't encounter the insanity that Natsu does in damage with others yet. I have to do all of this with Mitsu to get some great damage of a tech trap. 66A+B-3B-236B(BE)-CE...Look how much meter I use, almost two, lol. You could do the same setup of 88+B as well. You can't get a launcher of his sweep, only his B-a...:(

Nooooo I hate ZWEI. You have to get in way too close.

Then again, I main Xiba and secondary Nightmare, so my point of view may be skewed by that.

So what's the general consensus so far?

I just got it last night, and so far I think it's clicking better than 4 & 3 did.

I found one other australian in ranked two nights ago and now I can't find another to paly against, ever. :|

100% 1-0 win ratio in ranked 4eva

Are you on XBL or PSN? I've put 10 hours into this game since Thursday, 5 hours online, 2 story, 2 training and 1 in create a soul. I still haven't been able to have 1 ranked match on XBL at all... I do make 4 bars the min requirement but that should pick up any Aussie...

I've run into a few occasionally after making a lobby called AUS but most of the time 1 bars join and want to play... netcodes godlike but not that good.... So i've been hanging out in the Tokyo lobby and playing 3 bar games against Japanese. (I did the same in SFIV one day, and the rare 3 bars were nowhere near as good, run into YHCMochi and he played me @ 1 bar for some reason lol)

Kinda expected SCV to be a big more picked up than it was... the amount of people online for Super SFIV was great for the first 4 months, pity no fighting game since has come close since than in Australia.... and I've tried to get into them all but with barely anyone playing it's always back to SFIV... was hoping that SCV would last until SFxTK and it looks dead on arrival in australia, as far as XBL goes....

Maybe PSN is a different story though...

If you want a cheap way to beat quick battle, here's what I did:

My main is Devil Jin style so I use him...All I did for all the rank A AIs were mostly using sidestepping(22 or 88)K,K + 8AB. If the AI block on Ks, do 8G instead of 8AB. This will make your character spread its wing and somehow the AI won't attack you until you land which you can block for the most part.

623K,K will help a lot too. If the AI is on the ground and is close to you, you can use 623K,K about 1-3 times in a row before the AI start blocking low then you can do 88K,K + 8AB again.

This was how I did it. I don't know if it'll help you but I hope other Devil Jin users find it useful at least.

I've noticed the online is a bit sparse myself- makes me wonder how this game did.

Online does seem kind of barren for launch week. Guess SC4 poisoned the well. That and it continues to show that the fluff is significantly more important than the gameplay for fighters. Fighters seem to be opposite world, getting docked for a lackluster single player mode when they improved the core combat and netcode so that mp took a leap forward.

What region are you in? I am playing in EU, and there are always ranked games available within 10 seconds of search, also the Coliseum worked yesterday as well. A lot of people are playing this around here..

NA. I think the competitive crowd showed for this game, but KOF seems busier right now then this game.

I'm taking a beating online, and I used the worst char in SCIV and did quite well despite that.

I don't understand these disconnects i get online. The lag is fine (3-4 bars) and the games will still sometimes randomly disc.

GGs Kir and Bob. My Tira getting a bit better.

Much appreciated. I've knocked out a good deal of them but man, A1 Alpha Pat style? FUUUCK that.

Can you option select JG with a normal G if you release and then hold G within 6F of the attack hitting? They seemed to be demonstrating that in an ATP video but does it actually work?

Just so it's clear what I'm saying, quickly double tapping G is pointless right? The 2nd tap will make it so that you've voided your JG input completely? To JG properly you have to make sure you're not pressing anything at all when the attack hits right?

You get guard if you try to press G straight before blocking. No JG.

V_Arnold

Member
I trained JG'ing last night, and it was VERY easy, after getting the timing down on an attack, I could do it 15 times out of 20 easily.

The key is this: you have to RELEASE the G before the attack connects.

So:
"Traditional" (SFIII style) parry method: parry input right as the attack connects
SCV Style: tap G before the attack connects, G "just being released" as the attack connects.

The input and the timing is strict? Yes. But I totally see it as a valid way of defending - it is our brains that need to be rewired, not the reflexes. Once you know that an attack is coming, you can learn the JG timings. It is gonna change everything once the most daring players adopt perfectly to JG. It wont be easy, but it is viable, imho.

It just struck me yesterday, but what's the point of breaking the opponent's armor, now that critical edge depends on a special bar ? Is it just for the cool factor ?

I wish the manual were a bit more detailed, there is almost no information inside.

There's no point to the armor breaks. I wish they had dropped that dumb shit completely, personally.

It doesn't hurt to leave it here, it's still an amusing way to ridicule your opponent, most of the time all those powerful fighters are less impressive when fighting in their underwear (although it's the opposite with my Hulk character, he's even more impressive without any gear :D ).

But I thought they could have a consequence on defense...

Armor break isn pretty meek now on the official characters/costumes. Only on CaS edits/creations does it get to be SCIV levels of risque.

Well I edited Ivy's clothes and when an opponent online broke my armor, I started the next round in just a bra and panties and my opponent just stood there before I finally ran over and smacked him lol. It may have its advantages yet!

I do have to say this game surprised me with how good it is online. Not just technically but also how people behave. Cause SC4 had some of the biggest crybabies on xbl. Im glad that people arent really whoring killik cervantes again (or starkiller...fucking star killer) and ive seen some hilarious CaS characters already.
