South of Midnight is one of the weakest Game Pass release on Steam ever with only 1500 players

I didn't really pay much attention to it leading up to release, but I was expecting something more open world or at least those mini-open worlds like TLOU2 had. I played about six hours last night before my GPU subscription lapsed and cleared through 8 chapters (there are a total of 14, I believe). I keep coming back to it, but I get a lot of vibes of Alice Madness Returns and Psychonauts. I don't think this game will ever be as beloved as those, especially Psychonauts, and for good reasons, but like said earlier, I can see someone really enjoying this game for the straightforward design and the setting/themes. I can also understand hating it as it really doesn't do anything new mechanically and doesn't offer up any resistance.
Yeah, definitely not a game for everyone situation, which isn't too surprising either considering the developer's portfolio.

I enjoyed the first chapter! Looking forward to playing it more. It felt a bit different than lots of games in that genre, and different is often good. Fact thst it's a relatively small game (12 hour ish?) makes it more motivating to play too.

Sad. South of Midnight is a good game, not great but definitely worth playing. I also, don't think numbers on steam matter since you can play this on PC Gamepass and on Xbox Gamepass. Why play it on Steam?

Let's compare it to other games that also released day 1 on Gamepass.

Looks very boring. Not for me so I'm not going to hate on it, but those numbers are terrible. It definitely seems like a game that should have been an email.

Tomorrow when Blue Prince drops it will dwarf the sales of this game. PC gamers want gameplay not mid stories.

Source

For comparison's sake, at the moment South of Midnight is behind (in terms of players) Sunset Overdrive (2,326 players), Tell Me Why (2,784 players) and Hellblade II (3,982 players). The company's most popular game is Halo Infinite with 272,586 players.

One of the main reasons South of Midnight hasn't gained so many players on Steam is that the title was released day-one via the Game Pass service. In addition, there was almost no marketing about the game.

Ok Troll

Tried it out last night and I was actually surprised the combat (while still basic) feels better than it looks. Not surprised about the Steam numbers, but I don't think it's an earth shattering happening.

zero reason to buy the game when it is a single player game on gamepass. i dont find any logic in buying it to be honest. i am semi interested to play it and I dont feel like paying for 1 month gamepass to play it ( because I actually own the other MS games like Halo, Forza M and Forza H, Killer instinct plus many other of their games I like so much i dont want to pay for renting them. would rather own them. )

Lots of Game Pass games have sold plenty on Steam. And no marketing? Please it was one of four or five games at Microsoft's big January developer direct show plus other prior showcases. South of Midnight flopped. It sold poorly because it looks complete basic in gameplay, and what's the point of a poor playing game in this medium? Plus Compulsion Games has an outright racist community manager, welcomes racists to its studio, and works with racist Sweet Baby Inc, which is a toxic nail in the coffin more most games lately.

Atomfall is great. Grabbed me wayyyy more than I thought it would
I mean it lol. Maybe I'm out of the loop but I haven't heard anything about that game. :goog_relieved:

But if you say it's cool I'll check it out.

I think you know what picture that'll show........Hence why you don't want to educate GAF in this thread with the truth.
Really not following you here. What picture? I just checked and Indiana Jones also had much more players on Steam than SoM, so really, don't know where you are getting at.

You might want to wait until the new DOOM releases. I'm confident that game will prove that day 1 GP games can have a lot of players on Steam when they are actually good games.

I thought some of the music was fantastic.

There are some really good set pieces (environments/monsters/etc) that I also really liked. I will not finish the game, but I don't think it is the games fault...I don't finish 90% of the stuff I start as of late anyway.

Whats the overlap between steam users and gamepass users?

Lol the claim it's on gamepass so steam ccu don't matter always comes out when a game underperformes like clockwork.

As usual, western devs fumbling the main character. Most gamers for this type of game are still male, and most guys prefer to play as a man, and if they're going to play as a woman, it at least needs to be a character they can enjoy looking at. Would that have solved all this game's problems - probably not, but if they had an attractive and appealing main character to have sold in the trailers and marketing I have no doubt it would have improved this game's reception. Same for Star Wars Outlaws, Intergalactic etc.

It's a fair question to ask. I honestly don't understand why you would buy this game on Steam. 25+ million subs on Gamepass, so that a huge group missing from the conversation.

Even atomfall did 4x this game and has a higher current CCU than SoMs all time highest despite being older.

And had 1.5M players with 6k peak CCU 🤷‍♂️

CCU means nothing

I'm sure this game is not setting the world on fire but it goes back to what I said, nobody can extrapolate from CCU. Stalker had fans waiting 15 years for a sequel. They didn't jump on gamepass as they've been playing the past series for over a decade. Surprisepilcahuface?

After seeing this comment i looked up ur previous comments and it all makes sense now. An xbox troll in shambles.

Lmao! I'll never understand the obsession of some over a company, if they release crap, then it is crap, all of them did it. But these gamepass games from Ms really suck lately.

I really hope that Ms releases some bangers in the future like gow prequel and fable. If fable has a character creator then it shouldn't be too bad.

Then how come TLOU2 Remaster is being labeled a flop with 'only' 30K CCU on Steam, while TLOU2 sold 10+M copies?

Just trying to find the logic. But for some reason people seem to rather dodge the question.

Players are not sales on steam but you were comparing CCU to CCU when you asked for atomfall. This is currently 4x less than Atomfall. The 1.5M 'players' is total beyond steam and on gamepass.

Downloaded last night from gamepass, played 1h, deleted....go next.
Gamepass is so good if you want to try a game & you are not convinced if is good or bad.
Actually it saved me 40$ !!!
GJ MS and thanks for saving me money again & you guys are all thinking MS is not gamers best choice :)
........TROLLS !!! :)

We generally expect the platform holders to make higher than average quality titles.
Generally, that's not always the case.

Mobile tier game in terms of gameplay systems and graphics, and I don't think anyone here gave a flying fuck.

Fair enough. I wonder what this means for Compulsion games? Do they get another chance? 5-6 years for just an okay game, probably doesn't feel good for Microsoft.
I honestly don't even know why they put Compulsion Games on the forefront. I don't know if they'll ever be capable of those kinds of numbers. I mean, according to Steam We Happy Few peaked in the 3ks, and that's the highest they've ever done ever. I just wonder what MS saw in them.

Jesus Christ demigod demigod stop blowing my shit up with your laugh emojis, lmao. It was fun playing tag, but I just don't have the power in me to constantly do the back and forth, lmao.

It's incredible how out of touch are some developers regarding themes, narratives and gameplay loop the market wants.
It's like they live in a bubble and come to reality (some of them, not all) when they release the game and ....surprise pikachu...no one wants to play it.

These peoples I've debated here for the same reasons since Horizon zero dawn years and years ago. I said the same for ratchet & Returnal.

Nothing earth shattering in CCU here with huge franchises

Yet

Sony went from $35M → $80M → $250M → $450M from 2020 to 2023 (so pre Helldivers 2, which now it put at $700M for that year of release) from so-so CCUs that peoples were freaking out about.

Peoples saying TLOU 2 remaster flopped I've got the same arguments for them.

Yeah, it's a weird new narrative that single-player Game Pass games CAN'T have a high CCU on Steam. Good on you for sharing these.

It's not like Game Pass is big on PC anyway. Good, successful games have a big CCU on Steam. If a game doesn't have a high player count on Steam, it's not because of Game Pass; it's because of low sales.

I don't get it either. They really feel for the BioShock like trailer for We Happy Few I think.

You've been in these SoM threads defending it like your job was on the line. Crying about the emojis and then proceeds to spam me, hilarious.

Peoples are trying to extrapolate success with CCU and again, time after time, its never working out. Sony's own PC results indicate this. Or Atomfall. Yes 1.5M players for atomfall mean a lot more peoples went gamepass Xbox/PC.

If anyone wanted to try south of midnight, a new franchise with so so reviews, it's gonna be gamepass a lot more likely than a purchase 🤷‍♂️
So is the game a flop? Who the fuck knows. Nobody has the metrics. Stop trying to use Steam CCU for console warring. Its cringe as fuck. When the other stores grow a pair and share this kind of data then we can talk.

Why do steam numbers of niche titles that are on Gamepass matter? I see this as people who are too stupid to get a quick sub to play the game.

I was just returning the favor that you tend to do to me over and over again. I know I'm not the only one affected, lmao.
