Wrong, that is what funi sent Toonami, clearly funi had issues getting the rights to broad cast the songs so they just made their own for the dub broadcast. The fact the subbed version on their website has the op/ed supports this. The people at toonami had no idea what they got wasn't the same op until people messaged them about it, and to be fair the only reason we knew it was changed was due to the episode leaking

Rather it not being the song that was known to be the OP music for months.

Well this is about the only time I have seen a series where all the main characters and the villain die in episode 1.

Man I haven't watched the sub, but Dandy's delivery in the dub is great. It's like Johnny Bravo x Zapp Brannigan

"Thank you boobies."
The entire motivational speach.
"I CAN'T READ CIRCLE."
"Damn it Meow, THIS THING IS NOT CHILL"

So many other little touches as well like Dandy throwing the gun for no reason, Meow laughing while Dandy's drowning inside the water alien monster, the Terminator reference, the giant alien batting QT around in the ship like a cat, etc. Great animation and a likeable crew = I'm in.

I don't think the dub is bad at all, but the Japanese Dandy has more emotions for sure. Many of the supporting characters do seem like better fits in the dub though. Overall the episode itself was kinda average for a pilot, but the animation in the second half is definitely crazy awesome. The designs on the show are really good, and the music rocks. I think the way they handled the pilot does do a good job of managing expectations on the sort of show this is though. People who are totally turned off by there not having some "serious" plot will probably not enjoy it anyway.

what a fucking amazing first episode.
The animation was AMAZING, and the writing was hilarious, so many quotable lines. I don't think I've been this excited for the second episode of an anime in a loooooooooooong time.

Ah. My apologies.

I was thinking of Toonami's explanation for why Shippuden required a new opening.

I'm actually really surprised. Watanabe is my favourite anime director, and I'm having trouble liking the first episode at all. Didn't laugh once, writing struck me as rigid and uninspired, the sound direction and music didn't appeal, and the visual design far from captivates (even if the animation is smooth). Mushroom Samba this ain't.

The sub turned out to be a bit more watchable for me, whereas the dub was painful. I think they especially chose the wrong English voice actor for Dandy. His delivery is too flat and needs more dramatic energy to compliment Dandy's expressions and gestures. :(

I don't know... overall, it all just seems haphazardly tossed together so far compared to the stylistic cohesion and smart discipline that characterized Watanabe's other shows. I'll tune in next week, but, conceptually and thematically, I worry this is doomed to fail for me unless something changes in the execution. Here's hoping it picks itself up, and doesn't just spiral further into the same sort of disjoint, self-fellating psychedelia that killed the 1967 Casino Royale.

Looks like Bahi pulled all his comments on Twitter and Tumblr regarding the dub on DeMarco's suggestion. And, to be clear, DeMarco was asked what he thought, he didn't seek out Bahi.

Though all of Bahi's responses are gone, you can still understand the conversation from seeing DeMarco's responses (Bottom to top):

Hopefully, as a byproduct of this discourse, people won't keep misdirecting hate towards Toonami >_>

Thought the first ep was great. Really enjoyed it. The humor was better than I thought it would be too.

The fact that Dandy has such an appreciation for ass is also a major plus. I can fuck with this dude. *salutes*

I watched both and will probably continue with the Dub. Really thought the humor was better delivered. Animation in the end was incredible, and truly had the spirit of an AS show with a narrative direction aimed squarely at my inner 13 year old.

The other best bit is when QT prints of that complicated looking script, that turns out to be gibberish.

Hahaha, I loved this. The show is funnier than I expected. The music and animation was god tier. It looks like it will keep this level in the next episode as well.

Edit: Did anyone catch the Terminator reference? Lol.

The start of the episode had me worried. The whole "teehee boobies" and all the "clever" 4th-wall-breaking talk was kinda lame, but it all picked up very quickly after that.

The action sequences were amazing. Fantastic animation all around. I just hope they round out the cast a bit more.

Haha yeah, that was awesome.

EDIT:

I'm also Team-Dub. Voice acting sounded totally fine. I took my Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo dubbed, and I'll be damned if I consume this latest batch of Watanabe goodness in Japanese.

Fuck fanservice, self-aware or otherwise. Disappointing that even Shinichiro Watanabe has to go this route.

I don't feel it's a question of "has" and more that he wanted to go that direction. I don't think Watanabe is as innocent as you presume!

It's a bit early to tell that the series is going to go full fanservice. I thought the first part of the episode was funny in a campy way, I'll wait a bit before judging.
The more fan service the better in my opinion
My opinion is that your opinion kinda suck though. But whatever floats your boat.

Fan service exists because people want it. Supply because of demand. I don't care too much for it because I often find myself too.... distracted from a story or it's humor.

Loving this show otherwise. Seems like a really fun space adventure and that animation is beautiful. The series reminds me of this kick starter show that was going to be pretty awesome.

The fanservice is more like a parody of modern anime then anything. I'm okay with it.
And it felt appropriate with the premise of the show being "weekly Mushroom Samba", I came in expecting some sillyness. This plus the nods to Space Cobra...

They have ways to go before falling into fanservice territory imho.

It can't really be parody when it indulges in it so completely and unabashedly.

The introduction to the first episode outright mocks every other anime's obsession with boobs and the fans who like that. It is very much a parody. :p

I don't really see how it targets other anime in any way or the fans...or how it turns that on its head in a mocking way when it simply serves up titillation a few jokes mixed in here and there.

You felt it indulged in it? Every time there was sexy women on screen, it always seemed like it was leading into a joke, or to exemplify Dandy/Meow's lewdness.

I don't know if I'd go that far... There's nothing that really pointed in that direction, implicitly.

seriously. i feel like many people aren't separating the setting from what's actually happening onscreen, especially when i see some try to characterize the entire first half as nothing but boob jokes. did we watch the same show? does everything that happened under the roof of that restaurant qualify as "boob jokes" just because of the setting? i was kind of shocked at how tame it was.

When the extent of the jokes consists of 'breastaurant', alien breasts, Dandy is lewd, Meow takes crotch shots, alien orgasms and a sticker that reads 'I love breasts', I question the validity of your claim and the setting being used to deliver the funny. It sure as hell didn't develop the characters in any meaningful way, as Meow joins the crew right after his capture because why the fuck not?

Oh man, they had sexual jokes, in a cartoon!

Oh god, whatever should I do that a comedy is making sexual jokes.

Also We learn that Dandy is incredibly incompetent at everything, QT is practically the engine of the group, Meow is just about as bad as Dandy at everything, and in general, everyone is terrible at their job. If you noticed, Dandy missed every single shot he took, although he captured Meow, it was purely based on luck. We still got the rest of the show regarding character development, expecting it in episode 1 is quite silly.

Don't forget that it sets up that Dandy and Meow are perverts.

First ep wasn't great, it was alright. First part kinda sucked, it did get better after the first half. Hopefully the series will get better. The animation was great though.
