Space Dandy - Episode 4

Best episode yet. I actually laughed while watching this episode, which I didn't do as much when I watched the other episodes of Dandy. My only flaw was the
mercenary fight scene
, it looked very strange. Still one of the best episodes, but just something I noticed.

It used a lot of 3D, which explains the off look

Episode 4

It finally happened. IT FINALLY HAPPENED! Not only was the episode actually paced well, but it was funny and humorous throughout. Maybe it really is true that you can't fuck zombies up no matter what. It was pretty clever writing to cover all the typical zombie stuff in the first half, but with various alien twists and some nice action, and then build into the second half of the episode which is more unusual, and plays off the quirks of the show's setting really well.

Best episode yet for sure.

Jealous of the Glory that is Johnny Depp
4>2>1>3 for me so far.

The 3rd one was weakest. The 'twist' you could see it coming a mile away and it wasn't that interesting. I have enjoyed the other 3, with 4 being the best so far. Best animated sequence is still the whole second half of episode 1, shit was insane.

Morbid as it was, it was hilarious because I didn't expect the next 10-15 minutes to chronology the day in the life of a zombie.

It was certainly different and I give the studio points for that.

I'm really surprised at all the negativity regarding the first 3 episodes. Apart from a weak first part in ep.1, I've been laughing or in awe before the animation almost non-stop.
But hey, I like KLK too...

Wow what an awesome episode.

This might be the best anime I have seen in ages, I look forward to it every week.

Don't worry about it dude. I complained about all the negativity last week and got told off.

I watched the first episode yesterday and I have to say they did not do a good job of hooking me on the show. I'm weirdly indifferent about it. The second half was nicely animated but I had absolutely no idea what the hell was happening on screen half the time. Maybe they should've storyboarded some of those sequences.

I will probably keep watching since episode 4 is getting a lot of praise in here.

Loved it. Though I loved every episode so far. So it ends in a
cliffhanger
, but the preview of the next episode shows them not
zombies
anymore? I hope that gets cleared up, and not start the episode like the last one didn't exist.

The gag ran a little too long for my tastes. It was amazing at first, but would have worked a lot better if it were 5 or so minutes, instead of half an episode. I really dug 80s Italian horror inspired soundtrack though, and the references were great.

This show keeps on shitting on Meow lol.

Ep 1 - Got destroyed by the ship's explosion.
Ep 2 - Never got to taste the best ramen.
Ep 3 - Got forced feeded with expired food and got eaten by the Deathgarian.
Ep 4 - Be the first in the crew to be turned into a zombie.

They aren't going to reference any plot points from a previous episode. That much is pretty clear by now.

I think it should be obvious by now that the show never really clears up what happened at the end of the previous episodes. Everybody suddenly returning from the dead was never cleared up in the second episode either.

Yeah, lol, but it says To be continued..... though. But you guys are right.

So I decided to watch another episode and dammit if this show didn't suddenly hit its stride. Amazing episode all around. The
life insurance companies hiring zombie hunters
was my favorite part.

I'm pretty sure every episode so far has ended with a "To be continued" except for the first one, which said "The End" as a joke.

Here's what I posted in the Toonami thread:

It finally happened guys, Dandy actually lived up to it's potential and delivered a masterpiece. One of my bigget issues with Space Dandy has been the comedy, most of the jokes have been more 'miss' than 'hit' with me. However, last night I found myself literally laughing out loud at most of the gags, the rest of the time I had a big stupid grin on my face. The writing moved away from childish T&A jokes (for the most part) and focused on making light of the predicament the crew found themselves in. For once it wasn't constantly jammed down the viewers throat that Dandy is a lecherous moron and the comedy was able to flow more naturally as a result. Meow's still faces in particular were absolutely hilarious, I'm still sitting here giggling think about them.

Pacing was another big issue I had with Dandy's first few episodes but this one was perfect. There was no 'slow' half followed by a really good push towards the end, the whole thing was perfectly balanced. I really didn't expect them to take the 'day in the life of a zombie' route near the middle of the episode but applaud the effort, it was awesome and unexpected. The various movie spoofs were great as well, many live watchers pointed out references that I wouldn't have caught on my own.

I can tell by now that Dandy will have no continuity since characters have been killed off multiple times only to return the next week with no explanation..I guess I'm cool with that. I'm still waiting for the show to explain why Mojo JoJo and the Gogol Empire want Dandy so badly though, that is still a huge mystery. Also, there needs to be more character development for Meow, that is severely lacking.

Hopefully Space Dandy can keep the ball rolling, last night was one heck of a ride, baby.

I can't wait for the Blu-ray release already. Love the eye-catchers they throw in per episode, having those in pristine quality will be excellent for some wallpapers. Same with some of the gorgeous space shots.

Certainly the best episode yet. I think I've come to terms with the fact that continuity absolutely doesn't matter in this series; it has the potential to bring some cool, major thematic differences between episodes like this one or episode 2.

In a similar vein, I don't think we will ever find out why the Gogol Empire wants Space Dandy so bad. Dandy didn't even recognize the zombified big bad Gogol dude in the hospital.

"You're so mean, I thought you were my friend."

How you gonna do that to QT, Space Dandy?

Interesting timing with bit that found them being shot a in a mall. It is where Dawn of the Dead was set, but it's still a coincidence based on what happened yesterday, the day it aired.

I've loved this show for it's 4 episodes, so keep up the good work to all involved.

Next week's episode is directed by Akemi Hayashi. She's an animator who is also known for directing sensual character pieces. The preview definitely feels like her previous works.

Check out some of her stuff, I really like her work:
Her AniKuri15 short - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M9cAr-7HZM
Gurren Lagann Parallel Works "The Sense of Wonder" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86ZVXfs9cPc
The ending sequence for Kids on the Slope - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EdWaXBPrNA

For those familiar with Penguin Drum, she directed episode 20 of that too. It's the stand alone flashback episode about the characters when they were kids.

Didn't Watanabe say something about Space Dandy having the inverse of the ratio of drama/comedy in Cowboy Bebop? So we knew all along there would be serious episodes, just like Cowboy Bebop has some comedy episodes.

Some of this news is old, but it's more relevant now. The next few episodes will feature insert songs.

Next week's episode will have an insert song by Izumi Macra, composed by Izumi Macra and Yoko Kanno, arranged and produced by Mabanua. Ep6 will have an insert song by Junk Fujiyama, and ep9 will have a song by Dokaka.

In the Japanese version, the girl in next week's episode will be played by Kana Hanazawa.
