I'm pretty sure that the President cannot pardon himself from crimes.

That would absolutely be challenged in the Supreme Court.

It's never been done, so yeah. I expect the latter to happen if Trump declares as such.

......That said, that should be an overwhelming 'No. The president can't pardon himself.' Anyone who'd say otherwise is basically saying the president should be able to do anything and get away with it.

This system is very unfair, it was designed by politicians for politicians, and I'm not a politician. So I am announcing that I am pardoning myself, for anything they might claim I did that was illegal or unethical. You know they like to talk about ethics when they can't get at me with the law, but are those folks in Washington really ethical? Some of them are, some of them, but the ones saying I'm not ethical are not very ethical themselves, I think we all know that, right? It's part of the reason I was elected really, people don't trust the establishment, they just don't, and with good reason. They want someone to work for them, and that's what I'm doing, and that's why they say I'm not ethical or that I might have done something illegal, because really it's a system designed by politicians and they are using this system against me because I'm working harder than they ever have, I did more in not even half a year yet. It hasn't even been half a year! And yet I've done more than some presidents did in their first two years, maybe even in their first term. I have been working so hard, you hear about it every day, every day, we're always getting something done, it's really amazing folks. Can you imagine after four, or even eight years? So much done. So very much would get done, just incredible. But I did nothing wrong, I'm just pardoning myself because quite frankly if I don't do it then there would be a great injustice against me, a great injustice, like no other president ever had to deal with, and I couldn't go on and do all those things, so I have to get this out of the way, I really do, otherwise they'll drag this on and we're not going to get anything done.

So, not guilty, and not even unethical, I'm actually ethical when you really think about it, and even if I had done something illegal it would only be because it was under a bad system, with bad laws, written by bad people, because I've been doing nothing but good, nothing but good. And it's not just me, they keep attacking Jared, but he's such a good person, and he's been working so hard, just amazing... the veterans, the peace process, talking to business folks in other countries to come here and invest in the US, such amazing work, and they treat him so poorly, so poorly! The fake news media treat him so poorly. But he doesn't mind, he keeps working hard, so much really, I'm glad he has to respect to sabbath! Otherwise he might overwork himself. It's not a bad idea for people who work so hard to have the sabbath at the end of the week, they work hard so it was a good idea. Ivanka does too with the sabbath, and she works very hard as well, and they even try to go after her, can you imagine?. They are such mean spirited people, in the media, they really are, just mean, they're still angry I won the election.

But whatever, whatever, not guilty, I declare myself pardoned, and if they don't let me do that for some reason, then it's really a great injustice, and I don't think you folks will let it go, I don't think you'll let them commit such an injustice, not just against me but against everyone who voted for me! That won't happen folks, don't let that happen.

Ah, but that would be an amazing piece of evidence.

SC rules he cannot, but his tweet is then reinserted as prima facie evidence of Obstruction of Justice as the piece de resistance.

I mean....yeah. It doesn't get much more obvious than pardoning yourself for it. A pardon's basically saying "Yeah. A crime happened. That's why it's being pardoned."

While I think this is very refreshing to finally hear, does anyone else think that this "leak" may actually be hurting the investigation now? Was it Democrats that could have leaked this?

Now Trump and Co. have somewhat of a heads up on the status of the probe.

EDIT: Or does this further protect Mueller and the investigation because now it's out there that Trump personally is being investigated for obstruction. Therefore, were he to fire him then it literally would be confirming obstruction. Is that correct?

The next thing is trump will say "but I'm not under investigation for Russian collusion". Then someone will correct the record on that too.

People were out here last week acting like Comey's testimony cleared Trump of all wrongdoing. The obstruction charge could be worse than anything Russia related, and proceed independently of anything Russia related.

Self-incriminating idiot.

It's been said before, but Happy Birthday, motherfucker.

I truly hope this investigation brings all of these treasonous fuckers down.

I suspect Trump will fire him now. Especially with his volatility.

In recent days, the president has told his staff, his visitors, and his outside advisers that he was increasingly convinced Mr. Mueller, like Mr. Comey, his successor as director of the F.B.I., was part of a “witch hunt” by partisans who wanted to see him weakened or forced from office. But Mr. Trump has made no decision to act against Mr. Mueller and insists he knows the risks of doing so — but people close to the president say Mr. Trump is so volatile they cannot be sure that he won’t change his mind if he finds out anything to lead him to believe the investigation has been compromised.

What would actually happen if he fired mueller ? Could he get away with it? Not in public opinion but would something politically hurt him?

He would have to pressure Rosenstein to do it/fire Rosenstein and appoint a new deputy AG to get the new deputy AG to do it. Pressuring Rosenstein would literally be what happened with Watergate. Firing him would cost him politically.

So, here's my takeaway assuming a quarter of this is true: the GOP behind-the-scenes stuff:

Mueller is untouchable.

Trump could fire him, but he'd be hired by Congress to finish the investigation. Trump loses in all ways.

Trump doesn't fire him, it's a death from a thousand cuts before they shit down his neck for good measure. He languishes into Presidential irrelevance.

He's fucked. Happy Birthday.

So let's say Trump fired Rosenstein in a pressure to get Mueller removed. How long would it even take fill that position to get a person willing to fire Mueller?

That thread's not even speculation. It's an assessment of what we know.

No, we don't know these things. We think we know these things. There is a difference, just like today's proclamation is so important. It's confirmation. There is a ton of things in that thread that aren't confirmed at this point, and I'm not going to assume they are all true. Not yet, anyway.

So when Trump is taken out of office, is a pardon mutable? I really want his fat ass to rot in max for the rest of his life.

The GOP seems to be hard line turning on Trump, which is much earlier than I expected - I expected the turning point to be closer to midterm campaigns when not turning on him means losing seats. This early implies Trump is in deep shit.

I think after Rosenstein it basically goes to career DOJ employees, most of whom are not going to be very friendly to Trump. So...it could go on a while.

New candidate would have to go through confirmation hearings etc.

Maybe there is a deputy deputy AG that would take over until that position is confirmed again.

Yeah, we don't know the content of Sessions' discussions with Trump. We strongly *suspect* things, we don't know them.

However, he's right about Trump lying. He does it constantly, especially about things that make him look bad. If he ever gets put under oath it's game over. Which is why it's so ridiculous he said he would.

Also, you can probably round out those articles of impeachment with a "violation of his oath of office" for violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution repeatedly after entering office.

The amount of respect for Trump in the DOJ drops exponentially from Sessions. It's why he was so pissed that sessions recused himself.

So basically even if he tried, Trump would just be in a good tangle of firing sprees or hearing confirmations for a good while before even touching Mueller?

Good, very good.

The entire house is pissed at him because he pressured them into a vote on AHCA and turned around and stabbed them in the back by calling it a mean bill.

Pardoning is a process, and part of that process is admitting that you did the thing you're being pardoned for.

In some ways, we're fortunate, because Trump will never... EVER... admit that he did something that was wrong. He literally thinks he's more righteous than Jesus. I doubt everybody else will be unwilling to admit fault if it means avoiding consequences.
That isn't true. There was no admission of guilt from Nixon.
