Well, it could mean a lot.

Oh my god!

'two phantoms'

isn't it awfully suspicious how since david hayter was replaced he has been always behind the corner when it comes to mgs news? you could say hes there but not there... or a 'phantom'.

DAVID HAYTER AND CAM CLARKE TO RETURN TO MGS5 AS SNAKE AND LIQUID.

kojima yuve done it again!

Hayter will voice no character in Metal Gear Solid V, the decision made against bringing him back in part Kojima Production's decision to take Big Boss in a different direction from where Hayter's performance style/range excels, and in part Konami's desire to increase mass market appeal and advertising potential for a very expensive and comprehensive project like The Phantom Pain by bringing on a recognisable Hollywood actor.

Agreed. I love Hayter as Solid Snake and Big Boss in MGS1-4. But I can't see him fitting into MGS V.

I actually prefer Kiefer as Big Boss - granted, we've not heard much of him.

But I really like Kaz's voice actor. I think he's doing awesome stuff, everything is delivered incredibly well.

Kaz has some of my favourite quotes from any game and it's just stuff heard in trailers! God damn, I can't wait.

This. Kaz is the character I'm looking forward to the most in TPP. And speaking of quotes, the one from the red band trailer is still something I say and repeat whenever I hear this beautiful music. "Why are we still here? Just to suffer?"

Agreed, Robin Atkin Downes does an incredible job.

Strangely enough, I'm not liking Kaz's voice performance in MGSV (Of what we've heard so far). I liked him more on Peace Walker.

The character I'm looking forward to seeing more of, is Ocelot. Troy Baker is doing an EXCELLENT job with this character, down to the imitation of Pat Zimmerman's "western" accent.

Big Boss is a miss/miss for me. On one side, I don't like Kiefer's performance, at all. On the other side, I really, REALLY dislike the "almost mute" Big Boss we are seeing. Whenever I see the cutscene of the Afghanistan demo, I love Troy's voice acting, but seeing Big Boss say absolutely nothing, like if he is deaf/mute is cringe-worthy for me. I really hate it. It takes away a lot of the character.

Maybe his lines weren't recorded. That's my hope anyway.

I seriously hope so. I may not like Kiefer's acting as Big Boss, but I'd take him over "cat got my tongue" Big Boss. Ocelot keeps giving exposition and trying to interact with him, and Big Boss says absolutely nothing, he barely even looks at him.

Metal Gear characters are full of personality and interaction between them. They are crazy, exaggerated, but also so very human. What I saw of the Rescue Miller demo was not Big Boss, it was Link from The Legend of Zelda disguised a Big Boss, only even less emotional.

I loved the gameplay demo itself, but the cutscene made me feel uneasy for this reason.

From what we've seen so far in GZ and the TPP trailers, Kiefer's Snake/Big Boss has spoken more or less 587 words so far - including cassette tapes and not counting Ishmael.

I'm not expecting much dialogue from big boss I see his dialog being short and to the point, I guess this is what kojima wanted "tone" and " facial expressions" to convey big boss performance thanks to the mocap ( a load crap imo, btw keifer to me has sounded great so far very human). One thing is for sure we won't be having big boss answering a question with a question.

No, it was not annoying. It was funny, and one of the characteristics of the Snakes.

It wasn't funny after the first time. It was annoying. It wasn't needed. That shit wasn't a characteristic of Snake. It was shoddy Japanese writing. It made Snake look like an idiot.

MGSV neogaf threads are becoming worse than:

Ehhhh. Not even close IMO. That was a hilarious thread though.

I just realized practically all the major MGS threads here on GAF have been freaking amazing.

Disagree. It was hilarious and charming. MGSV needs to have some "METAL GEAR?!"

It was not shoddy writing in any way, shape or form. It was a character feature and it was fun as hell.

It really wasn't meant to be funny. But I didn't think it was all-that annoying, either. Snake didn't strike me as an idiot - just a guy who needed loads of clarification.

To be fair, the purpose of Snake's interjections wasn't as a character feature (what insight does it give to his character that can't be shown more economically or effectively?), it was to break up the massive exposition dumps.

This. Imagine listening to Baker's speech without any interjection. God. HURT. ME. MORE.

I think this also comes with the territory of Kojima and whomever else writes learning to actually write effective dialogue. Sure it might be to break up the massive exposition. But thats the writers fault. Massive exposition can be tedious if the presentation and writing is not top notch. A cheap line to break up the monotony just doesn't help.

There are some instances in GZ where the writing goes back to this. But for the most part. I think MGS has come a long way in its writing. I hope they keep it up because what i experienced in GZ was phenomenal without too much need of exposition paragraph monologues.

Pax and Chicos tapes are a good example on how much better of a script they have this time around.

Don't get me wrong, it has it's narmy charm but it absolutely is bad writing. I was disputing that it was a "character feature". I much prefer GZ's (apparent) "show, don't tell" philosophy.

I agree. I think MGS.. what it has going for it is that the story, presentation and general sci fi mix make it appealing and different. The characters are interesting by themselves.

But lets get this straight. MGS has for the most part TERRIBLE scripts. Some make little to no sense overall, and need several revisions to really get whatever Kojima wanted to tell. In some interviews he has mentioned that he wants MGS to be very simple, and that anyone can understand it. But i feel that he falls short on this. I think him wanting to be in the movies, and only being able to make games saturates his vision of what really is needed in a successful script.

Now.. i love his work non the less, but its a little more liberating and rewarding with this time around MGS GZ script. Peacewalker had better dialogue as well.

Overall... 10 mins of exposition is not acceptable.

Yeah, definitely not a character trait. I get why some of the repetition was there, but 90% of the time it was there just to be there. It was shoddy writing if it couldn't be explained the first time and Snake had to countlessly repeat himself. I also prefer the GZ show don't tell method.

On a side note, I had the community manager of Konami UK PM me on twitter. He was nice enough to notice my extreme fandom & asked me if I was going to GC. I'm not (I didn't know MGS was gonna be there until too late, and didn't have tickets or the money to fly to Germany on short notice), but if I was he was going to get me into the TPP event. I'm both lucky and unlucky at the same time. Maybe I can go to TGS or EuroExpo? But I'm thinking it's too late to get decent flight prices. darthvadernoooooo.gif

Out of interest, does the Japanese translation of the old MGS games have Snake repeating stuff back? Not meaning to sound ignorant but is it a cultural thing or unique to MGS?

I've gone on a media blackout since the release of Ground Zeroes....I saw that they have a 30min Gameplay demo online...can someone just tell me how amazing it was?

Oh of course, I know! But it became a part of the character. To me, removing such feature would be like removing the in-between "a" in Mario's phrases.

I think people have a very weird idea of what Solid Snake used to be like, or what the franchise itself is like. Solid Snake was not always a super serious soldier, he also had his goofy moments (Just hear him speaking to Raiden about cardboard boxes).

Big Boss was also a huge clown. We are talking about the guy who believes Santa Claus is real and is afraid of Dracula.

I believe newer fans just want the franchise to turn into some "super serious" stuff.

Metal Gear is a series with giant robots, people with super powers, fantastic technology, supernatural elements, goofy, cartoony characters that still contain lots of humanity in them.
Metal Gear Solid V still seems to contain the same stuff Giant robots? Check. People with powers? Yes. Silly stuff like sending sheep to Mother Base? Check. Hiding under cardboard boxes? Check. Clones? Check.

But suddenly, people are speaking of "silly"?

Metal Gear Solid. Super srs bsnss.

eehhh it was pretty good, i guess.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? IT WAS THE BEST THING EVER!!!!! HOLY FUCKING SHIT, WATCH IT ASAP!)

Seriously, WATCH IT, it doesn't spoil shit since it's a mission just designed for E3.

Edit: Make sure to watch it in 1080p, 60fps

Your eyes will melt.

Keep in mind it's still in early stage so there will be pop-in and stuff like that.

I am sorry... but BB and SS are not the same. Sure SS and MGS1 kind be kinda silly. But BB always came across as a more serious, and also more traditional in a double 0 spy scenario. BB has lost tons of people, and has been betrayed countless of times. I don't expect BB and SS to be the same and feel campy all the time. I think GZ has it right.. he is torn and becoming a demon. His path as we know is on freefall towards bitter and angry.

Imagine an open world MGS with stealth focused on reconnaissance mixed with the RPG elements of Peace Walker. It looks fantastic.

I'm not a new fan and I want it to take a more serious tone. People tend to try and put down the seriousness of MGS by bringing up the comedic, fantasy, and sci-fi elements of the story. It having large robots, supernatural enemies, advanced technology, and humor to offset the serious themes/messages somehow makes me confused with who Snake is or what the series is? I'm sorry, but if anyone is confused, it's you. MGS is taking a serious turn, and it looks like it'll be the best one yet because of it.
