I am sorry... but BB and SS are not the same. Sure SS and MGS1 kind be kinda silly. But BB always came across as a more serious, and also more traditional in a double 0 spy scenario. BB has lost tons of people, and has been betrayed countless of times. I don't expect BB and SS to be the same and feel campy all the time. I think GZ has it right.. he is torn and becoming a demon. His path as we know is on freefall towards bitter and angry.

Big Boss never came accross as more serious. He was even goofier than Solid Snake. Have you even played Snake Eater? We are talking about a fellow who believed glowing mushrooms would charge his batteries (It worked, though...)

MGS is taking a serious turn, and it looks like it'll be the best one yet because of it.

Yeah, you wish. From the trailers we've seen so far, MGSV still keeps the silly, over-the-top stuff the franchise has always had. So you are wrong.

I meant in terms of providing a wealth of information in a small amount of time, you ding-dong!

Ding-dong?!

Oh of course, I know! But it became a part of the character. To me, removing such feature would be like removing the in-between "a" in Mario's phrases.

That's not really the same thing. You're comparing a (slightly offensive) vocal tic, to something that functions as a way to break up the exposition (unless there is some cultural factor I'm not aware of).

I don't think it's integral to his character, it's simply a lazy writing technique. If you took it away, you wouldn't lose anything of Snake's character.

You did use the CODEC in MGS3, didn't you...?

The man that awakens from coma may or may not be Big Boss...a few interesting things I discovered.

I have always felt that the trailer from GDC 2013 is hiding a lot of things from the player. The theme of the trailer is after all 'Everything Is A Lie'.

I have been watching the gameplay footage as well as the trailer that was revealed during GDC 2013 for the last few months and I found two very interesting points. Now there is a chance they might have been discussed here before so pardon me if you already know, but here goes!

1. When Big Boss is on the bed, his left hand shows no signs of amputation.

This image shows that Big Boss is responding by lifting both of his hands:

NVlDPyW.jpg

This second image clearly shows his left hand was never lost when he was bought in the hospital. [this shot was pretty difficult to take but some of you may get a better image, if someone can really slow down the video and take a shot]

2. The "S" sign is clearly missing on Snake's chest when he awakes

Big Boss has a S sign on his chest. This was revealed in Peace Walker. You can see the image here:

When Big Boss awakes, the sign is gone. Image here:

------------

Two arguments that can be made against these two points.

1. Snake may have lost his arm 'during' his nine year old coma.

My counter argument: How this will happen is something I cannot comprehend. Big Boss' both hands are responding to the shock indicating that they are active.

2. Snake's S mark might have healed up on its own.

The S sign is iconic to Big Boss. The sign served as a reminder that he will always belong to the boss. I know I don't have a proper argument but am not sure why something this important to the series will be gone in a matter of one game.

------------------------

Thoughts?

I thought this was just a ruse. He has this fake S in which he hides the tools to escape from the prison in Peacewalker. After you use it he doesn't show it anymore.

Nope it was not a ruse. In fact he had it since the beginning of Peace Walker. See the image in my post. The screen is from the intro of Peace Walker.

No, I'm not. I'm well aware the gameplay wouldn't be what it is without the humourous gameplay elements. I'm glad they're still here. I'm talking about the serious tone of the story and the cutscenes.

For the most part i stayed clear of Codec. take away that, and just take the story of MGS for what it is in MGS3, and you get a more serious tone, with a struggling Snake that will become the Boss. nothing funny about that. Just the simple premise is of betrayal.

Yeah, no. As far as the story itself contains clones created in the 70's, psychics, snipers that can create camo on their skins and giant robots, you are wrong.

Just out of curiosity were you guys more hyped for MGS4 or MGSV? Because I remember being far more hyped for MGS4, there seemed to be much more to look forward to.

With the CODEC you don't have the full picture and scope of the game. You missed out on all the characterisation and some really important plot-points (for example. regarding Ocelot's relationship to The Boss), for starters.

You better replay that on the double, soldier!

Its not a real scar. After the torture scene Miller comments that BB did a fake scar in order to hide the saw he used to escape. In the briefings, they tell it's not a scar at all.

I do tend to go back and check every single CODEC even the bosses since they have easter eggs and what not. I honestly like the tapes better. The context and the presentation. Plus them getting rid of the codec and adding it in the go is way better.

It's a fake scar that hides a jigsaw wire which he uses to escape his cell, it's not real, and I imagine it's gone after he removes the wire.

Yeah, no. As far as the story itself contains clones created in the 70's, psychics, snipers that can create camo on their skins and giant robots, you are wrong.

So by your definition, advanced technology and science fiction in a serious story completely negates that serious tone? Yeah, okay ;)

I'm guessing MGS4 being labeled as the end of the series, or at least Solid Snake's last game, hyped up expectations quite a bit. With MGSV, we already know the general direction the plot is gonna go in with Big Boss turning into a war-mongering lunatic and Outer Heaven.

I was, of course, beyond hyped for MGS4. It was my favorite PS3 game and one of my all-time favorite games. (The entirety of the Metal Gear franchise would be number one on any top-10 list I write.) But my hype for MGSV is unprecedented! My God, dude. I have watched these trailers hundreds
THOUSANDS
of times. I have incredibly high hopes for this game, and I know Hideo will deliver another masterpiece.

^This. Also about the amputation. It doesn't matter if the arm was "active" when he was brought into the hospital a lot can happen in the span of 9 years. Blood clots, gang green, etc.

And to think that it isn't Big Boss that comes out of the hospital is pretty far fetched.

What keeps me incredibly hyped about TPP is not really Big Boss' transformation, but the very clear connections to the rest of the saga. I want to see more of young Mantis, hell, I care more about Eli than I do about Big Boss.

And yes, of course, I want to see Solid Snake
voiced by David Hayter.

I feel like MGS4 was aiming to be like MGS5 but due to complexity of the ps3 cell at first kojima had to scale back which is evident when you read what he was aiming for with mgs4 and the initial trailers which people later noticed the "downgrade". Samething could be said for mgs3 it was meant to be a ps3 game. Funny how everything works in the end, but I will say that kojima seemed disgruntled during the making of mgs4 tho.

I wouldn't be surprised if kaz had the most dialog in the game,

Well, in GZ, he's your main talking guy so yeah, not really surprising :P

I could be wrong but there hasn't been a game where snake had the majority of the dialog anyway lol

I agree! Also, I think that in MGS4, Solid Snake was the least talkative compared to his other 3D games, but I stand corrected.

Nope, just that it prevents it from being TOO serious, as you would like it to be.

I never said I wanted it to be TOO serious. I'm glad they're keeping some of the humor. Explain to me how science fiction and advanced technology take away from a serious tone.

I never said it did. In fact that's what I like about the series. It has a perfect balance of seriousness and goofiness. Unlike what you want it to turn into.

We haven't seen many cutscenes in TPP so far so it's too early to say. Despite that, it looks like the goofy moments will be mostly in gameplay, while the cutscenes will be heavy and more serious.

Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is up to the player's tastes.

Hell no, MGS3 was my most hyped game ever and MGSV took it's place now, seriously i'm so insanely excited for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain it's not even funny anymore.

Just thinking about the upcoming Gamescom event in a week with all the possible reveals (SOLID SNAKE??!), new gameplay footage, Kojima Q&A, and the not yet announced surprises! (HAYTER!?)

I think people have a very weird idea of what Solid Snake used to be like, or what the franchise itself is like. Solid Snake was not always a super serious soldier, he also had his goofy moments (Just hear him speaking to Raiden about cardboard boxes).

Big Boss was also a huge clown. We are talking about the guy who believes Santa Claus is real and is afraid of Dracula.

I believe newer fans just want the franchise to turn into some "super serious" stuff.

Metal Gear is a series with giant robots, people with super powers, fantastic technology, supernatural elements, goofy, cartoony characters that still contain lots of humanity in them.
Metal Gear Solid V still seems to contain the same stuff Giant robots? Check. People with powers? Yes. Silly stuff like sending sheep to Mother Base? Check. Hiding under cardboard boxes? Check. Clones? Check.

But suddenly, people are speaking of "silly"?

Metal Gear Solid. Super srs bsnss.

as someone who bought and played the hell out of the mgs1 way back in 1998, i kind of resent the implication that because i/we want the series to mature a little bit in terms of writing, we must be new fans if the series.

you may like the writing style of the old games, that's cool. as a huge mgs fan of 15+ years, i always saw it as a flaw and appreciate the changes kojima is making.

you can keep the game relatively silly, but still correct issues with the writing. there are plenty of if silly, over-the-top games, movies, etc that don't have shoddy dialogue, poorly written and paced exposition, etc. look at something like tarrantino's movies and writing style. he's silly and over-the-top, has long stretches of dialogue, tons of pop culture references and statements about life. but it never comes across as poorly written, quite the opposite in-fact. there are many ways to go about writing metal gear, and still have it be metal gear. it doesn't have to fully embrace the flaws of the prior games, it can actually improve in them, still be metal gear.

i invite it, and look forward to seeing what kojima can do

I've never saw it as a flaw. I think it's excellent.

Maybe you'll grow out of it like some of us did. I used to praise and love the writing of MGS1... even 2. Now i go back to it and see a lot of flaws and poor writing. But i know a lot more now. I guess take it for what it is. If you do enjoy it then thats great. Some of us just want something to mature and evolve and not remain the same.

The quirky elements are part of MGS just as much as Snake is.

Besides, MGS2 has a rather clever writing.

Objectively speaking, MGS4 produced far more justification for hype. End to the series, sequel (anything can happen), Raiden's story, Metal Gear vs Metal Gear, Beauty and the Beast unit. I think your pushing this Hayter/Solid Snake way too far, if Solid Snake does show up as a kid it would probably be very brief and wouldn't contribute much to the story. The gameplay we've got from MGSV has been boring, definitely will be fun to play, but still it just looks like Metal Gear, does not create much hype.

Oh? And what is it I want it to "turn in to"? You think I'd be as big a fan as I am if I hated how MGS has always been? Goofiness =/= science fiction. Goofiness, however, certainly equals that stupid repetition that Snake does. That's shoddy writing, plain and simple. I love how MGS has been, but I'm also not a fanboy and have always been critical of the over the top silliness that has plagued many moments in the series. The seriousness of the cutscenes and story of MGSV is much needed.

It's not stupid, it's hilarious. And the perfect balance of seriousness and goofiness is what makes the franchise great. I'm sorry you cannot see that.
