Spencer: Scorpio targets requirements of high-end costumers - means a higher price

By next year, construction costs etc for a 6TF machine will be equivalent to a 4.2TF one right now.

It's not that simple. Sony had to make some severe compromises to get PS4 Pro to $399, like using the old Jaguar CPU, no 4K-Blu-Ray support, no additional memory (except that cheap 1 GB DDR3 one).

MS on the other hand plans to deliver a full-blown high-end console. At least this is what Spencer said here. And if that's true, they will struggle to get that thing to $399 without subsidizing it.

It's a year late and still tied to the Xbox One in terms of what it can truly do.
If it was a behemoth new generation console then maybe.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking. They should have went next gen, I don't think it's enough right now. They are to far behind and the way they talk about Scorpio it doesn't sound like it will change anything.

Eh, I'm on the 399$ side. Mandatory Kinect Bundle was 499$ and that basically killed them for a while.

Plus, if you look at a specific GPU this year, you will see the same GPU getting rebranded as a much cheaper version in the next year. That or you will get a new card with the same performance with a cheaper price. Don't see why this wouldn't happen here.

Can we expect some news (not about price) soon you guys think?
Or will it be a typical event in may or something or even E3?

Probably nothing until at least GDC, maybe we'll get some leaks from devs.

Dream scenario: trailer at the game awards in December, in engine, unknown game, looks amazing, ends with 2017 Xbox.

Not happening but let me dream.

I see a 449€ price incoming (at least).

But... who knows... maybe their trying to set even an higher price for a really high end console...

599€ VR ready console? (with better performance than the PS4Pro of course)

There's going to be an interesting marketing challenge with this console. They have the Pro's rocky campaign to learn from. But as they say "Price is King." Spencer seems to be prepping consumers for a price north of $400, but how far north? They must be under immense pressure to produce software that is demonstrably better looking to clearly demonstrate its 4K credentials.

But in holiday 2017, if the Scorpio climbs into the $500 or $600 price bracket, the Pro can cut its price to $350 or lower and has a large library of optimized titles. I wonder what makes the case for Microsoft as the killer app in order to convince people that they need to go with the more expensive competing box. It'll be interesting.

My prediction is $450 500 GB model and $500 1 TB model. They both include remastered versions of Halo or Forza, native 4K, 60 FPS.

It'll be $399.99 and not a penny more. They'd be foolish to price this over $400 in late 2017, "premium" or not.

It won't go past 399 - I've been saying that for a while. No one (not enough people) will buy a console at $500 anymore.

Enthusiast's perspectives on price when it comes to consoles always surprises me. Come Q1, I'll be dropping 700+ on a 1080ti. Tons of people just dropped 450+ on a new graphics card alone. I imagine most who are interested in the Scorpio would fall into this leading edge tech crowd, and that always comes at a price.

I think Microsoft is doing a good job communicating that this is akin to that graphics card upgrade as opposed to a new console launch. They aren't targeting the casual player, but more the elite controller demographic.

I'll also be getting a 1080ti but how many "enthusiasts" willing to drop that sort of cash on gaming will be interested in a console? I think it's reasonably priced console or decent gaming PC, I can't imagine the in between market has much crossover (probably one reason steamboxes have flopped).

Meh...Sounds like $500 which I think is generally a mistake...but then again, what do I know. X1s will be defaulted to $200 by then, so having a premium box that plays those games at 4K will be cool...

Lot of Xbox gamers should upgrade, could interest some multiple console owners, and could allow MS to actually make some money on hardware.

Not enough exclusives for me to concern myself with, but I think $400 or $500, and xbox fans will likely support this. I honesty wish Sony would have went with the higher tier option of better CPU/5.5TF for $500, I would have bought that just like I did the Pro. Seems reasonable enough that the same logic will apply to Xbox owners.

Hard to price without knowing all the specs in it. $449-$549 with different storage options will still fit in console pricing. Releasing the most expensive price SKU a month earlier will help mitigate any loss with the cheapest version. Regardless of price, I am betting it will sell a lot for the first few months leading into the holiday season.

I'd pay $500, maybe $600, if they have a ton of additional power, so that multiplatform games look and run a lot better than on Pro (not just a little, a lot better). MS exclusives don't do much for me, so that's not a factor.

If it's over $499 it's setting it's self up for failure because by time it take off PS5 will be over it's shoulders.

nah, it'll still sell to existing owners or gamers who mostly play third parties and aren't tied to either ecosystem.

If the CPU is much improved games might not look head and shoulders above Pro, but they should run much better. So if Pro is PC at low/mid-range and Scorpio is PC at mid/high, then that should be enough for a lot of trade-ins (X1/PS4) towards the Scorpio to offset the price.

If it's good enough - I disagree - relatively speaking a LOT of people bought the elite controller, given it was a $150 controller.

If it looks and feels premium, with a noticeable bump in gfx on 4k TV's then it will sell enough for Day 1 I reckon.

It doesn't need to sell 1 million on day 1, or 10-20m in year 1 to be successful over it's lifetime.

jeez i was expecting $399/£350, if it really is more than the Pro this thing is DoA everywhere but US and UK, and even in those markets it'll be tough as the XBO has only been selling because of the constant price drops, bundles and gift cards.

Sure, the new design, games, backwards compatibility and general progression on the platform have nothing to do with that.

I'm really curious as to how this is all going to play out, with the recent feedback on the Pro. If MS is making a console which does pretty much what the Pro does, why would it need a high price tag?

What else is MS going for aside from a 4K, prettier graphics but still plays same games console? What would justify a higher price?

I've got an S for xmas after seeing the vast improvement the console has achieved and can't see myself going for the Scorpio unless it's unique enough to replace the S. It needs to make tea and toast at the very least.

Based on the specs Scorpio should be doing a lot better than pro in terms of power.

I doubt that the Scorpio will be more than $399 because MS wants to ultimately sell more consoles than Sony. It would be stupid for MS to make a premium-console that would outprice themselves out of the console market. At $500 or more consumers will strongly consider just going PC instead so that they would have the flexibility of upgrading in the future.

But going higher than 399 makes no sense. Who's to say people would not just wait for PS5 which will be 399 in 2019 or whatever and skip the Pro and scorpio entirely?

Why put yourself in a position where you have to price it higher to make your money when there is no real guarantee that will actually pay for itself?

It feels like Sony aggressively priced it to make a decent profit while being a decent power up, while MS seems to want to go with making a stronger unit but having a higher price.

Especially if Zen is not even in the console, what makes the Scorpio more attractive to users? Does a stronger GPU and potentially more bandwidth matter a year from now?

MS have to be careful about how they go about this. They have Sony's mistakes to learn from, they can't be making their own

6 Pages in and i'm still not sure who those costumers are!
i mean... you can't make cosplayers pay a premium right? riiight?

I feel like at this point we should just wait for a solid rumor or official price announcement. Feels like we have new scorpio price guessing thread every 2-3 weeks.

$449.99 calling it now...but seriously though...

I can see it being an akward price like $429.99. Just enough over $399.99 to make some extra cash without it being too much higher to prevent people from buying.

The weekly reminder that the Scorpio exists.
Ya MS should be respectful of their competitors and not talk about their own projects when asked questions about it. How dare they.

Journal: "Hey Phil so can you tell us more about the Scorpio, what can we expect?"

Phil: "Hmm, why you asking me that? I'd rather not talk about it because as You know, the PS4 Pro is out right now. Just grab that."
