Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

Hmm 7 kills, 0 deaths, nearly 1200 points on Saltspray Rig with the Kelp Charger. Defended the entire lower point by myself against 3 of them while my team mopped up the map, it was amazing. The enemy finished with only 25% of the map inked (their starting area, basically)

So how do you guys hold the gamepad? Do you put your pointer fingers on ZR and ZL, and use them for R and L as well, or do you use you pointers for just R and L and your middle finger for ZR and ZL? I do the former and my hands are starting to hurt, but I can't play well with the latter.

If you've played Epic Mickey, where you also don't always aim at a target specifically and paint the scenery with a crosshair while in 3rd person, you'll know what I mean: it's wonky. You get used to it, but the ink never really lands where you really want to aim spontaneously, it's messy and you have to correct all the time the wonky interpretation the game does of your intent.

If have both Epic Mickey's here but still unplayed. Guess I'll take a look at them to see what you mean.

Then again, I read there's a local Wiimote + nunchuk option so maybe they coded something satisfying, but I doubt it works as well as gyro+analog or full dual analog.
No no no no! There is no Wiimote aiming in Splatoon in any way shape or form!

Add me to the camp that not only loves the controls (they clicked immediately for me, as soon as the testfire), but even think the game can't really be played any other way.

Also, I don't get the hate: if you don't like gyro controls, turn them off. Let's see how better you do.

It's worth playing, it's not that bad, and has good stuff that makes you dream of what could have been.
It was worth for me if only for the third person Wiimote aiming thing, actually :-) I love trying to decipher how games work. The aiming was a valiant effort, it works as long as you aim near the center of the screen and not too far off the sides, but it desynchronizes a lot when you go there.

Some people here said there was in local 1 vs. 1 (didn't play that)?

True, I forgot about Metroid Blast, but again, this is a game where you shoot at things, not the scenery, the game can therefore deduce where you want to fire easily.
In Splatoon, though, if you aim a little to the right of your character, do you want to aim to the floor further away where your crosshair points to, or do you want to splash to the direct right of your character? Your crosshair doesn't point to a thing, but is a line from the camera to the crosshair, and you may aim at any point located in that (sometimes pretty long) line.

That's because the game again identifies your targets, there's even a circle appearing around enemies which your point to to notify the game "understands" that you're aiming at them. Try spitting shells at imaginary points, and witness the game not firing it where you want and Yoshi turning his neck in disturbing ways. Again, it's not a big issue in the game because it handles the camera and chooses viewpoints that limit the issue, and again, you're pointing at specific things, but if you point to a random point in the air or a wall or the floor, it's not precise at all. And Splatoon is all about that.

Then again, I read there's a local Wiimote + nunchuk option so maybe they coded something satisfying, but I doubt it works as well as gyro+analog or full dual analog.

I'll admit what you say is interesting. I never thought of it that way. There must be a reason Nintendo didn't offer this control method after all, however, from what I can remember, my accuracy shooting a wall and such in Metroid Blast seemed to be dead on. Now I'm curious though and will give this a try tonight. Thanks for the reply.

Cons

-Why no off screen play? The map really isn't that important. It could be condensed down to the small screen
-Motion controls, eat shit

The map is essential. You might need to play more to realize that.

Turn motion controls off if they bother you.^^

My favorite weapon so far is the scattershot jr, i almost always end up on top and with the current combinations of clothes it does good damage plus recharge the ink pretty quickly. It covers the map very well too

Oh I have, just don't like them.

Again, I'm not saying there shouldn't be a map, I'm talking like a Mario Kart style map on screen.

Being able to see the overall battlefield and launching to other players quickly is extremely essential for strategy.

How is you not being good at motion controls a Con? Plus you can turn off motion

They could do something like Hyrule Warriors Local multiplayer and lower the textures/resolution a bit. It's always better than nothing

Disagree. And please don't use a musou game in a technical argument :p

Sadly I can't see them managing splitscreen. If this was a basic shooter, maybe, but splattering stuff usually use a lot of ressources, and would be even worse if you add a second screen.

If they can't even do it in a 1vs1 mode where you just have to pop balloons, imagine 8 players constantly painting everywhere.

So the thread page count doubled in the last 24 hours. Wonderful.

For anyone that wondered, I stood in line for 12 hours but got my Splatoon Amiibos, plus a couple others for a friend. Overall, probably wasn't worth it. I'm level 8 right now and keep forgetting to go and register the Amiibos.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. I got this when I bought the game at Target. Did anyone else get one of these?

A con to me, TO ME. Jeez, everyone stop getting so eggy about that.

It's not just essential to look at though. I'm assuming you haven't played enough, really. Squid Jumping to your teammates or retreating to the base via the touch screen is the important bit. The instant access to those on-screen buttons is what's key in conjunction with that big full-sized live-map. Plus it keeps your playing field unobstructed. Positives piled on positives.

They did that and that's how and why Battle Dojo exists.

I'd keep going with the gryo controls. they'll click and when they do it's glorious.

Literally played with them for the past hour and a half. It wasn't that I was doing terrible, mostly coming 2nd etc. But I constantly felt like I was mentally battling them, then correcting myself mid gunfight, then losing because of the controls rather than my ability. Switched back to sticks but still hate how sensitive up/down is vs left/right.

Someone help me. I just absolutely fucking suck at these controls. Both the motion controls and the stick controls. I don't know why. I've already played about 5 or 6 hours of the game, mostly with motion controls, and I'm having way too much trouble being accurate.

My brain understands the controls just fine, it's the accuracy that it so difficult for me. I feel like I have a decent grasp of the game in general, I almost always come in first place when I have the roller (which requires no accuracy). But as soon as I switch to any gun, I'm just absolute trash.

Does anyone have any advice? I feel like by now I should have the controls down. I've tried all different sensitivities. I don't know. Maybe I'm just not meant to wield a gun.
If you aren't accurate enough with motion controls, try turning it down. I found that it makes it so much better. I would recommend turning it all the way down and work your way up until you find the perfect balance between aiming and turning fast enough.

THIS GAME IS FANTASTIC.

Like boy I love how fun things are. The matches are quick, colors and designs are great, and it's really fun to be going up against people. At the moment I'm seeing a ton of rollers and regular splatters, but I'm sure that's going to change as people level up. I can't wait to see what this game looks like as more stuff gets unlocked.

Weirdly enough, I though I would hate the motion controls, but they work out really well!

Just played a match where my team was dominating the other teams section of the map, and their team was dominating ours. Pretty funny.

Rollers are more fun than the guns I think. Guns are too slow in covering area.

Disagree. The d-pad should be used for basic commands, 'I'm here', 'need help' that pop up on the map that point to POI. All the buttons are not even being used on the pad. You're telling me it's easier to press the screen than it is a face button that used for what you're asking? No.

Gamepad is helpful but not at all necessary. I don't find it comfortable to play. The things gonna ruin my wrists. Ah well.

You haven't addressed how squid jumping would work.

You can only jump to like 3 possible targets. No reason you couldn't assign a button to each one.

How would Inkstrike work? Like Call of Duty? I rather be able to move around the map a bit while selecting my target than to be obstructed with a map on the screen and analog control to move my attack icon.

Exact same here, it's because the X and Y axis are always different levels of sensitivity and you can only adjust one single sensitivity slider which controls both. They need to fix this, seriously. I'm still enjoying the game but goddamn it highlights their lack of knowledge of basic shooter functionality.

There is a secondary weapon that allows you to drop spawn points. Not saying they couldn't assign jumping to a button / toggle through a list, but the touch screen does work well for it. I'd say let people use the Pro Controller, but still use the touch screen if they want to for jumping.

Bought the last two Inkling Amiibos at my gamestop. Poor kid behind me.

First time buying Amiibos too, so I feel dirty. Girl Squid is too cute though.

edit: Question: Once you scan an amiibo you don't need it for the game anymore right?

I really appreciate how the maps will be unlocked over time. It's fun to really get to know the maps as a group.

How do you get gear with more than one buff attached? I need to get better stuff.
Wear it. Battling with the gear will eventually unlock abilities.

Who said you had to have it? Optional. It works in Mario kart, would be the same in this

Except that in mario kart the minimap is virtually useless? Here you need it to know how much surface belongs to who, where are your teammates (it's pretty important), teleport, inkstrike, etc.

Or do you mean a button to toggle it? Wouldn't be ideal at all either imo

You're entirely misunderstanding what I'm talking about going by what you're saying there. I'm not talking about anything related to commands at all. Are you aware what tapping your teammates on that map does? That there is a button that says "spawn point" and that you can tap that as well? Doing so makes you jump to that location immediately. That is what I'm talking about.
