Getting the Rainmaker is kinda like going through one of those huge Indiana Jones-esque gauntlets because everything is stacked against you from the start.
You not only have to break the shield, but you have to be wary about opponents turning it against you and turning it into a bomb that will kill anything that can reach it (with the exception of a Squelcher/Charger/Splatling since they're long-distance enough to be safe and sometimes capitalize when the opponent think they got the upper hand after breaking the shield since anyone can grab it after it's broken).
Once you actually get it you have to pray to everything that's holy that your team mates will be on point because in spite of it's awesome power, the Rainmaker is easily outflanked and much like the Inkzooka it's not good for covering turf for moving forward. Not only that, but it will self destruct after holding it for too long and you can't get rid of it unless you actually slam it into the enemy container. You can't use your Specials at all either and you move much slower when not in ink. Getting the Rainmaker is a burden that comes with a lollipop. Unlike a traditional CTF mode where you generally have all your tools available for you even after having the flag, having one here is kind of a curse. You've basically confined yourself to an eventual death.
It's easy to feel the allure of picking one up (for one it's the way you win, for two it's a huge powerful weapon and for three it's big and shiny) but I think the trick is to stay patient and know restraint. Even if you're the only one available to pick it up concurrently you need to consider where your enemies might be at present time, which of your team mates is currently present and what weapons you all have.
My personal rule of thumb so far that has mostly worked out for me is if I'm rocking a weapon that has a Kraken special, I try to carry the Rainmaker as little as possible since it's incredibly invaluable when making certain pushes. Most weapons that have the Kraken as well are usually the ones that are defensively oriented or cover a lot of ink, so it balances itself out. If I use a weapon that has a special like the Inkzooka then I don't have any qualms with carrying the thing. But again a lot of it is dependent on what you and your team mates have.
I have to say I've seen quite a deal of people lamenting Triggerfish in this mode but I actually really like it. The nature of the stage means there's two ways to make a push - either through a full frontal assault or through the longer, safer way. I say "safer" because the Rainmaker can actually shoot through the yellow barriers that tend to block most ink weapons, and if the enemy is mounting a defense at the floodgates, it's easy to fire off a Rainmaker shot and decimate them in the narrow pathway. An interesting strategy that my team seemed to adopt once was to distract the enemy team as all three of my team mates had the same idea and rushed the enemy team from the front, which actually seemed to distract the opposition since I was carrying the Rainmaker at the time and went through the longer, safer pathway. Only one person on the other team seemed to notice what was going on but he made his approach really clear so I managed to snuff him out before he even got the chance to mount a defense. Won by a Knockout the moment the round had started and we had gotten the Rainmaker.
