Yeah, you're right. I really wish he rebooted Metal Gear after 4 instead of grafting on more Big Boss stories.

Even though he doesn't consider Rising or Portable Ops as canon, I thought they proved that MGS games can be made, and be well received, without Kojima's full participation.
It's one thing I always disliked about Kojima, he always put his staf down saying they were to shit to make a real MGS game without him and he was basically forced to stay because he didn't trust anyone else to fuck it up.
Like seriously? Why put your staff down like that? And then because Karma is a bitch Kojima goes and fucked it up.

did anyone find out what the role of Ocelot in the game is, or why is he even in it.

Yeah I blame Quiet.

If she didn't exist maybe we would have gotten that final ending,
you got the Quiet sexing Fake boss ending though. so good right

if someone fixes that by replacing Quiet with Code Talker I'll be happy.

kazuhira miller was a bastard born from a poor mother, when he finally met his father he killed himself, he ended up in a battlefield where he lost to big boss was was going to kill himself but big boss told him to not do it and instead become BFFs and make a private army. they finally make that private army and it gets blown up because some dude without a face was mad jelly at Snake. he spends the next 9 years trying to recreate the army all while waiting for Snake to someday wake up. When Snake wakes up, he inmediately abandons him and sends a crappy clone to be his best friend instead, and he loses an arm and a leg and probably his eyesight. Then when he finally retires from active duty after sending his best friend's son to kill his best friend, his best friend's other son, a kid who once stole a metal gear from him, and his business partner kill him.

what a crappy life

He gave them a chance with MGS Rising, guess what, they fucked it up so bad that platinum had to almost remake the game.

Nope, it was clarified that they didn't know what to do with the story, in other words, there wasn't any point in doing something that's already covered. Partly the reason why platinum went into the future with the story. Platinum DID completely remake the game.
If the MG team stay at Konami I put my faith in them to create a story better than MGSV.

It's amazing how last-minute and tacked-on the twist feels considering we had stuff like this all the way back in mid-2012:

Ever since Peace Walker, I've viewed this "Trilogy" PW, GZ, and TPP, as a weird spin off since MGS4.

That's a fantastic way of looking at it.

Only problem I see is that
GZ was actually really, really good.

In fact, who on earth would have believed that Ground Zeroes would end up being a far better game than TPP in the end?

I'm replaying MGS1 now and Liquid's impersonation of Miller is actually really good. He got his inflections down and everything. His real personality seeps through a bit (probably the most "real" we ever see of Liquid since he's so pissed off the rest of the time) such as saying "The weather could change on a dime", which sounds like a phrase a bit too dandy for Miller. I can see why Snake was fooled.

Obviously real-Miller was based on Liquid-Miller from a creative standpoint, but in-universe it's interesting to listen to Liquid-Miller again after playing PW, GZ, and TPP.

He also never managed to have a successful burger venture.

I was really excited about revisiting Camp Omega for TPP.

Eli should have interacted with Miller more in the game. That would have been interesting to see.

He has a relationship with Diamong Dog's big three, as shown in the later games.

It's amazing how last-minute and tacked-on the twist feels considering we had stuff like this all the way back in mid-2012:

Eh, the other phantom is Skull Face. He was associated to 'XOF', which was a mirror FOX unit that supported the real one. Venom Snake had nothing to do with FOX.

Just finished the scene where Quiet is injured to retrieve the momento for those kids. I just like to say that this entire narrative thread regarding the kids have been incredibly stupid.

Because it's unnecessary. The reveal itself isn't enlightening in any meaningful way and frankly just makes things more complicated. If we had just played as Big Boss it would have made just as much sense, if not more. It feels like a M. Night Shyamalan-esque twist.

The twist was apparent from the GDC trailer lol, it was blatant that we were getting a bait and switch. To me it just proves how shit Kojima's writing went. The guy has literally lost his marbles.

The fact that he said in his official debriefing vid "I spent long and hard thinking, the best way to tell this story. I hope the fans will like it" screams he's a shit writer, in which way did he think the twist would be good? It's not as if the story hasn't been panned by Critics and fans or anything.

He's a shitty writer who doesn't know he's a shitty writer

That strangelove TAPE was fantastic. I wanted nothing more than for the Boss's voice to come in for one line, dammit! All those pauses, her slowly suffocating. Fuck.

Otacon had the weirdest parents

Once the GOTY discussions start, I wonder if comparisons between Witcher 3's and MGSV's side missions will be made. Or rather, Witcher's side missions compared to a lot of MGSV's main missions.
I mean, I liked the core gameplay in MGSV and all, but the game won't have a space in GOTY discussions.

There are so many goddamn problems with so many different elements of it, it's disqualified for serious considerations, imo.

Kojima is a fantastic director, but a shitty writer.
I miss the other guy, wonder why he left the series.

Crazy to see how things have changed.

It was MGS2 that he claimed was his "last" Metal Gear if I recall correctly, back then he said he wanted younger developers to take it and run, since then he has come back time and time again. Not anymore.

That's a fantastic way of looking at it.

Only problem I see is that
GZ was actually really, really good.

In fact, who on earth would have believed that Ground Zeroes would end up being a far better game than TPP in the end?

Ground Zeroes still feels like a over glorified demo to me, for as harsh as that sounds. Sometimes I feel like it's the Tanker Chapter, while The Phantom Pain is the Big Shell. Except I didn't have to buy the "Tanker" Chapter or beat the game to find out I wasn't playing as Big Boss in the "Big Shell."

Ocelot in brainwashing entire classrooms of soldiers, i think.

In all kinds of languages.

Kaz had a hard life...

He got the end that was coming to him. Big Boss saves humanity from a nuclear holocaust in the Peace Walker incident, spends 9 years in a coma, and all he asks from Kaz is to build a mercenary group on an oil rig with his doppelganger for a while while he chillaxes and makes other moves. Even that was too much for "woe is me" Benedict "Arnold" Kazuhira Miller.

Kaz didn't even realize Venom was a phony. He's the worst friend ever.

Forgive Kaz, he's blind, I think.

It's already been brought up, but the lack of interaction for Eli with the big 3 was so disappointing. The opportunity was just there and not taken advantage of.

It's strange to me hearing people refer to the Man on Fire episode as a "boss fight". I ran away, saw the water tower, ran over, shot it, he got wet, and I got on a chopper. It was really simple and obvious to me, and lasted maybe 60 seconds. It's like the Fortune "fight" in MGS2.

I didn't even like the Quiet fight. I beat her easily the first time with the default tranq gun. By having you spot her, there was never any tension to the fight.

I wouldn't count the Skull soldiers as boss fights, since they are just bullet sponges, and the sniper Skulls was the Quiet fight but with 4 of them...

So that leaves the "second" boss (unless I'm already forgetting things from this game), the Sahelanthropus, which I lost to several times by trying to play it "correctly" as instructed by the codec, but then I figured out you can just cheese him by running in circles in that first area by the mountain-side, where he will jump up and do his one shot rifle kills that can't hit me. It took 7 minutes then to beat the mission and I got an S rank.

This was such a bipolar game. It's so much fun to play, but it is such a disappointment at the same time.

I hate to say it but I'm coming around on this view.

That the moments I took as 'knowing wackiness' were just poor writing, and that MGS3 is so perfectly paced because he was just aping Spy Thrillers / Bond Movies for that one.

Either that or he has undergone an M. Night Shyamalan loss in ability. Shyamalan's name was the one I kept coming up with as I watched bad scene after bad scene during the game. Just an unfathomable fall from grace / botch job from someone who previously appeared to have command of his craft.

I don't think it was a lack of time, either. Much of what's wrong with the game is baked into the core design, story choices and cinematic decisions.

What is the deal with Kaz's name though, seriously? McDonnel, Benedict, and Kazuhira are all his first name? I think it was explained at one point but it seemed so superficial, like the writers decided "I no longer like the name McDonnel"

Kojima is a fantastic director, but a shitty writer.
I miss the other guy, wonder why he left the series.

I looked up "metal gear retcons" just for the laughs, and this page shows how off the deep end the series has went since 3. The number of bizarre and unnecessary retcons since then is pretty nuts.

Does anyone know how much the others writers input factor into the story. I think shut Murata came on with mgs3, but I'm not sure how much influence there is there since Kojima kind of an egomaniac

Couldn't disagree more. I think that as people get used to the gameplay being so great (and we will probably get sequels based on this engine and gameplay - Kojima's true last legacy) they will remember the story above all. And it being so bad will mean that this game is remembered as the GTAIV of this gen - ushered in with tons of praise, loved by everyone for a solid week, then the atmosphere changing as people say, 'Wait a sec, is this it? This isn't really what we asked for here. Where the story (MGSV) / chaos, jetpacks and fun stuff (GTAIV)'.

History won't be kind to this one.

Eh, did people stop praising RE4 once they got used to the gameplay being great or since games who improved on its mechanics were made? The problem with GTA IV that made it ultimately fall from grace was gameplay related, which MGSV doesn't suffer nearly as much outside of mission structure.
Then again, with how much emphasis this fanbase puts on story, maybe you're right. Outsiders who don't care much about that aspect will probably remember it much more fondly, though.

I was really excited about revisiting Camp Omega for TPP.

Yeah, I was reading an old GI artilce that mentioned this and it bummed my out. It seems like a very missed opportunity. I'm more interested in the development behind this game than trying to piece together a semblance of any plot.

Big Boss shoulda sent him a card or somethin'.

Seeing all the budget concerns and stuff, maybe Kojima should've just made another semi linear game or just cut the scale of the open world to be a series of Ground-Zeroes esque bases, have like 20 of those lying around. It would've been better than "These 4 bases of about the same size as Camp Omega, but with tons and tons of empty space inbetween."

They didn't know what to do with the story, and they thought of Platinum? For their amazing stories, i assume.

I mean even the original demo in the Fox Engine looked like shit, gameplay wise, it reminded me of the clunky garbage that was the katana in MGS2.

I don't know when they clarified that, but i find it hard to believe.
And if they wanted to put the game into the future, they could've done that without platinum.
So yeah, i think they got platinum 'cause they couldn't make a fun action game, which doesn't mean they wouldn't be able to now, of course.
