Yeah. I know what you mean. I'd say that anyone interested in playing P2 at this point's already likely played it, but I guess a decent number of new people might visit it for the first time after P5.
Kanji wasn't gay, though I don't think the devs would want to admit it after speculation. The only guy he gets a crush on is Naoto who turns out to be a girl who he still has a crush on afterwards. The situation is more 'I have a crush on this guy?' followed by 'Oh! I guess that's why.' Both their shadows were also about gender roles than sexuality.
As far as Nintendo goes, the only reason they put in the effort is because they're internationally focused. Them getting a bad rep in the west really affects them due to this. This is why they put out the bare minimum effort for Fates to reduce complaints. I'd expect the same effort in the next FE game since it did help in that.
Atlus doesn't face the same pressure due to being Japan-focused and as seen in the last year, don't really pay attention to Western reception.
