The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 9 [END] (Chronological Order)

I suppose that's as good as any other way to end this series. Will do a full review later. Still have to do a proper review for Gurren Lagann too.

Although I am debating holding off on this review until I watch The Disappearance.

Well... It would be interesting to have both your opinion before and after watching Disappearance, but it's up to you of course.

Mekaku City Actors ep.11

Okay, fuck it, I have no idea what's going on anymore. I'll just watch the finale next week then go back through the series looking for the threads that tie everything together and try to piece together the story that way.
I really hope they didn't randomly omit stuff from the LNs that crucial to understanding the plot.

I may be wrong, but I believe the anime passed where the LN currently is at. You have to remember the series is actually based off of a soundtrack of 22 songs that can be found in the following link, so SPOILERS IN LINK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kagerou_Project#CD_.2F_DVDs

there are differences in each piece of the franchise so one would need to read manga and ln, watch the anime, and the songs, to build a full picture.

Can't wait for Free S2 to start so I can post as much manservice as I want.

Eternal Summer going to be amazing, our favorites, Rin and Nagisa and Haru especially.

Well, that's
two episodes in a row in which our Designer Child of the week has escaped without being awakened. And the first one who seems to be aware of what they're trying to do to him and wants nothing to do with it. I think I like this guy.

I believe that should be all the Designer Children present and accounted for now, so I guess the next episode will have to break away from the semi-episodic formula and maybe actually go somewhere. Much as I've actually kind of enjoyed this formula, some actual plot progress of some sort would be nice.

I had no idea there would be differences. I will be picking up the LN from Yen Press when that comes out and may look into the manga as well since both were licensed. Pretty sure I have watched most, if not all of the songs on niconico.

On a side note, the original Ghost in the Shell movie is being releases in the states on Blu-ray with the new HD-master.

Hyouka 1
And here we go! Starting another Kyoto Animation show.

The show is beautifully animated. Like really, really well done. The show has a very intriguing premise and I like all the characters introduced so far. Oreiki seems to have some mad deductive skills. I look forward to seeing how his character progresses with Eru. He seems quite enamored with her. I thought it was amusing when he handed his application for the Classics Club over to her with like this look on his face of "Why did I just do that?"

I am really looking forward to seeing more of this show.

Yeah, I saw that earlier. Great news! I'll be picking it up right when it comes out. Nice to see Manga Entertainment actually do something in North America for once.

Now someone just needs to rerelease Innocence here. No way am I paying the ridiculous prices the Bandai BD goes for.
If I ever see it for around $70, I'll seriously consider getting it.

This was one of the best episodes in a while. By throwing Lafiel well outside her comfort zone and making her rely on Jinto, it sheds a lot of new light on their relationship. He finally gets his chance to show his resourcefulness.

United Mankind's been painted in a very negative light over the course of this entire show. I'm curious why they're so deeply resentful of the Abh that they'd risk protracted interstellar war. Jealousy seems like a partial factor (who wouldn't be jealous of the beautiful, intelligent, long-lived Asari Abh?), but there has to be more. I can see why our characters would only have a negative perspective, but even the scenes taking place simultaneously elsewhere in the galaxy make United Mankind seem petty, deceitful, and repressive.

You shouldn't need more than two guesses to figure out this character's profession.

Seems like a big ship battle is coming up, but they barely developed anyone on the ship so I hope it doesn't take too much time.

The license was only announced last week, so it may some time before pre-orders appear. Surprised to see Amazon even has Yen Press pre-orders available after the whole dispute with Hachette, but I am going to wait for Right Stuf to get the pages available in the coming months.

I read them to figure out what I'm watching as can't be assed to look at the charts. :(

I look at the charts or maybe now some website previews just to see what the shows are actually about. For me looking at a bunch of names doesn't tell me much.

I pick stuff up through osmosis in the thread then promptly forget about it, said lists jog my memory.

The Wind Rises

Man, that was damn great.. its such a directorial showcase, the way everything falling together in the end.. I think this is what zeroshiki meant in his impression, this movie is something that Miyazaki can make at his current state with all of that experience under the belt.

I also think this is the most subtle movie that I seen from him, at his other movie I thought he kind of director that very direct and rather brash for his movie storytelling, but at The Wind Rises I felt being told to take the movie very slowly unlike his other movie, its worked beautifully.

Another thing that I really impressed, about an hour in the movie picked up sub-plot to pair along with the main one, and its blended seamlessly while at the same time its still told like separate plot point, its really impressed me how natural that shown, and its also build up to the climax that very satisfying, despite the ironic nature of it. Fantastic movie.

Mardock Scramble: The Third Exhaust

I really liked the whole casino stuff that bridged this movie and the last, finding myself really engaged in the whole blackjack duel. It was presented in a far more realized (mature?) fashion, creating tension with nothing really more than a player, a dealer, and a blackjack table without the usual animeisms one might expect.

That said, it's a shame that part is sandwiched between all sorts of pieces of this shitty franchise. FIrst half of the film had me thinking this might not be as bad as I'd been told but once they returned to the stupid plot, it went back to being so fucking dumb.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Series Review (Pre-The Disappearance)

***SPOILER WARNING!!!!***

====================================================
Story:
This is the story of a girl who seemingly has God like powers to bend the universe to her will, although she doesn't know this. In this show we see how everything plays out through the eyes of Kyon (not real name). Although we are never actually told Kyon's real name he doesn't seem to mind (or at least later in the series) to be called Kyon.

Throughout the beginning Haruhi and Kyon meet Mikuru, Nagato and Koizumi to round out their group and form the SOS Brigade. During this we learn that when Haruhi wants something to change it sort of happens and they must clean up after Haruhi without her knowing of what is actually going on. The group fears of enclosed spaces and does their upmost to keep Haruhi happy so they can prevent these spaces from happening.

This is the basic premise of the show. The show is mostly entertaining from it's back and forth of it's two main characters, Kyon and Haruhi. However the series never feels like it reaches a climax. It just sort of ends. Because of the series structure you can watch it in chronological order (like I did) or watch it in its broadcast order. No matter how you go about it you will be entertained. The thing is that the series really feels incomplete (this may have something to do with the movie, The Disappearance). The series feels like it's building up to something but doesn't really feel like it's going anywhere. But I suspect that's what happens when the person central to the story is a madwoman who does anything she wants, on a whim, to a hilarious degree.

=====================================================
Characters:
Kyon - The most "normal" person of the group. Despite this his job is the most important. His opinion actually matters to Haruhi. In that respect it's up to him to try and keep the world "as is". He's snarky and sarcastic which clashes fantastically with Haruhi's high energy personality. It took a while but Kyon started to grow on me. He makes some dumb decisions throughout the show but is able to resolve them in time.... most of the time.

Haruhi Suzumiya - The title character. Haruhi is free-spirited and sees the world as her plaything. At the beginning of the show she states that she wants to discover Espers, Futuremen and Aliens. Her personality is what makes the show so enjoyable and hilarious. Despite some personality flaws she is one of the more likable characters

Mikuru Asahina - A future-woman. Recruited into the SOS Brigade by Haruhi. Haruhi labels her the mascot of the SOS Brigade because of how "moe" she is. Mikuru is very submissive (as is with her moe status) and cries a lot when Haruhi...... Erm... "teases" her. For some reason when Mikuru would cry I would laugh. I don't know why but for some reason her crying was somehow amusing as I assume that was the intended effect.

Yuki Nagato - The quiet alien girl. You see the pattern here? When Haruhi takes over the room of the Literature Club for the SOS Brigade she assumes that Yuki comes with the room and is thus part of the SOS Brigade. Honestly she is the most badass character in the show literally saving Kyon any time he is in danger. Nagato isn't much of a talker and only responds when asked to or to give any answers. When she does talk it's strait forward and to the point.

Itsuki Koizumi - The last member of the SOS Brigade. I had a hard time remembering his name to be honest. Koizumi is an Esper and is recruited by Haruhi into the brigade. He is really the only one who can explain to Kyon (and in that sense the audience) clearly what is going on in any given supernatural event that transpires in the series. He actually kind of comes off creepy and as someone who is hiding something. At the same time he is extremely cooperative and always tells Kyon exactly what needs to happen and how to go about doing things. Keeping everyone in the loop.

==================================================
Music:
The Opening
Honestly with the exception of both OP's and ED's the music doesn't really stand out in this show. It's so-so. Average. It gets the job done. However you want to put it all it really comes down to is simply something that is there.

==================================================
Animation:
The overall animation quality is pretty great with Season 2 having some noticeably better animation than the first season. KyoAni did a great job with this. It's not their best work ever but it's still better than some other productions out there.

====================================================
Overall Thoughts:
Endless Eight is the most evil thing ever thought up by an animation company!

When I look back on my time with The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya one thing nags at me, I didn't watch this for it's story or how it progressed. Honestly how the series progressed was weird and really didn't matter. It was all for entertainment sake. If you watched and enjoy this show you watched it for Haruhi's hijinks and for the crazy things she would think of next. You would also watch for Kyon's commentary on all the going ons for the group.

Character progression was minor to minimal. The only character you can say changed between the beginning to the ending the most was Kyon. His only real change however was his acceptance of what is going on in the world.

Don't be put off by that though. This is a very funny show that will make you bust out laughing because of some of the outlandish things the show does. If your looking for something to have a good laugh with look no further. Though some may want to watch it in chronological order. Now onwards to The Disappearance...

Glad you enjoyed the series! I'm sure you'll love the movie, too; I know I did. I'm glad that I was able to grab the Blu-Ray of it before it went out of print.

Don't forget to watch Haruhi-chan after Disappearance, Pshyco. It's a series of short comedy pieces that riff on the show, and is one of the best things about the series IMO.

Oh btw might be a typo but under Trigger's panel at AX, they mention Ninja Slayer coming out this year.

So either they mean Winter or that everyday battle anime thing is being pushed back.

Welcome to the club of fuck Kyoani because of endless eight.

You know for episodes 6 & 7 I really thought I wasn't going to make it through. But I rationalized that if I didn't do it than all that time wasted was for nothing.... but it still amounted to wasted time. T_T

Disappearance makes up for endless 8... Okay maybe not but it's still the best thing to come out of that franchise.

If only this were true. But nothing can make up for Endless Eight. Nothing!

Yeah disappearance almost made me not hate moeblob. Almost.

Mikuru was funniest when crying. I think I am a sadist.

Wonderful end to a wonderful show. Probably my favorite show this season, with equal parts heartwarming and hilarious. Hopefully it gets a blu-ray release over her, I'd buy it in an instant.
