Today was the general focus panel, but the questions were mostly bad ones; about the only notes I remember getting out of it was that the Cybodies from Star Driver were each designed with a motif to match their pilot's personality & his favorite from the show is probably Samekh, he shares similar anime tastes with Hiroyuki Imaishi, and he likes seeing robots blow stuff up.

I kinda consider Zouken to be a sort of comedy relief character at this point, like certain Rider/Waver scenes. He doesn't appear often enough to really have a huge impact on the tone of the show, but whenever he does appear it's "fun" to watch in a comic way, like you said. I blame his terrible design... and that laugh. Dat laugh. Lolz.
Zouken (like Sakura and, to an extent, Saber for that matter) are victims of the fact that this is still a prequel to an existing work. It's no coincidence that the most gripping characters are the ones that operate exclusively in this particular story.
No idea, but it won't be me who breaks the trend, seeing as I've never even watched Panty & Stocking.Why didn't anyone ask him about SEMEN?

Actually, F/SN had already established a significant amount of details regarding Kiritsugu and Kirei during F/Z. Essentially 80% of the stuff Kiritsugu does and believes here were already set in stone before F/Z was even an idea. Kirei has a lot more leeway, but his personality and motivations were fleshed out previously as well.
The people that didn't have anything to do with FSN are Waver/Rider, Uryuu/Caster, Kariya/Berserker, Irisviel, Maiya, Aoi, and everybody in Kerry's flashback. Everybody else was either alluded to in some fashion or explicitly mentioned.
EDIT: Also, what I've just said here has absolutely nothing to do with what will occur in F/Z. No spoilers here.

Deadman Wonderland was not an above average manga. You're nuts.
It's shounen trash of the lowest sort. The kind that tries to be gruesome and dark and just ends up being blergh because you can't take this melodrama seriously.

The pacing, art, story, tone and characters are definitely above average. The story has a clear goal in mind and is relatively brisk at getting to it. The tone of the universe in general is rather brutal. The characters are rather unique in regards to backgrounds.

This only seems to exist because Sonada did the character designs and the game needed to be promoted. Apart from that, the best way to sum this up is simply to use a summary:
It was relatively entertaining because of how stupid it was and I think it worked just fine as a single episode. If it had gone on any longer it would have overstayed it's welcome and the novelty would have worn off.

So that's the first season of LotGH and I really, really liked it. It's verbose but never pointless, and I never feel overwhelmed by the scope of the dialogue when compared to other shit that keeps throwing terms and rules at you (I'M LOOKING AT YOU SHIT/ZERO). Most importantly, it throws a lot of philosophy and political stances at you but it never feels preachy or manipulative. The writing only lays out the terms of the plot and asks the viewer to come up with their own reasoning, most evidently through Yang's continuous doubts about the government he serves for.
The animation was subpar most of the time but the content and writing rich enough for me to forgive the obvious low budget shenanigans going on. I'm enjoying this a lot more than all the other crap airing right now. Maybe anime was truly better before and we are just experiencing the low point. Surely there's nowhere else to go but upwards?

Pacing is pretty fast. I mean the manga is in the final arc and the manga itself isn't that long. The narrative arcs flow pretty well into each other and there really aren't resets. The initial setup is rather on the weird side but other than that, most of the arcs especially the current one are very good at fleshing out the universe and particular characters in general. I mean the whole series about what drives people to madness and the show does a fairly good job at delving into that. The character development especially on the part of Shiro has been fairly good and having the heroine have a split personality, to such extremes, is rather interesting. The tone is definitely fine, I'm not sure what you would want it to be in regards to that. I mean the series is based on a prison where the superpower is based on blood.
This is the crux of my problems with DMW. I would've thought DMW was hot shit when I was, like, 9. I'm not 9 anymore, I expect a little more from my entertainment, targeted towards kids or not.

I suppose of its also of interest to anyone who wonders what early SHAFT works looked like.

The story does exactly what it sets out to do; take an absurd concept and play it completely straight while pumping "rule of cool" into it. Conspiracy theories, creative uses of blood manipulation abilities, insane scenarios, etc. If that's what you want, it pulls it off very well.
The series really isn't targeted towards kids in any way shape or form. You have torture of children, death of main characters, sadism and NTR is a gay relationship. It's more targeted towards young teenagers/teenagers. The plot is fairly simplistic but the execution for the most part has been fine. Again I'm not sure what you expected of it.
It's difficult to even imagine what their shows could look like without the aid of computer graphics.

Truly early SHAFT would be Juuni Senshi Bakuretsu Eto Ranger, though it looks like they had some full productions that were even earlier than that.
Generally speaking, most stories like this are trash. And if you think DMW accomplished what it set out to do, then the only logical conclusion is that it set out to be trash.
I'm not saying you can't enjoy it. For example, I enjoy the -monogatari series even though I know it's trash. Saying it's anything else is being intellectually dishonest. Ditto for DMW.
Not enough rape or tits to be seinen. Also published in a Shounen mag, ergo, targeted toward kids. Mind you Japanese kids grow up in a very different environment (with regards to entertainment) than their American counterparts across the ocean.

I'm just saying DMW is about a crazy world that has no bearing in reality. I would compare it to Suda51 stuff. I don't think it's an inherently bad approach nor do I think it's just "junk food" entertainment. It's consistent, it's entertaining (to some people), and it has some interesting plot developments sandwiched between the insanity. If someone doesn't like that stuff, fine, but saying stuff like "only 9 year olds would find this cool" is uncalled for.
