Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko 12 (FINAL) + OVA

(I feel like potential was ruined with shot compositions like the above. A lot of passive colors with questionable lighting, clashing with the energy in the foreground by the characters.)

Denpa Onna is maybe a story about getting the most out of your adolescence, maybe. Probably. Well, who's to say. Between watching girls fall into the main character’s lap and listening to said main character ramble internally about adolescence, I’m not sure if I watched a harem or something trying to be a drama worth taking into deep consideration. I suppose one could say it borders between the two, like a comedian trying to integrate politics into his routine but forgets to be funny about it and just comes off as preachy. Denpa Onna is not funny nor is it clever. Its plot is a train that loves to veer off its own tracks. It’s got characters that it doesn’t truly know what to do with. What was once implied to be Erio’s story is quickly dropped for the lesser characters, characters who are desperately trying to be cute while still being somewhat grounded. As someone who was interested in the show for Erio, that kinda sucked. I got more entertainment from watching gifs and looking at stills of Erio rather than from watching the show itself. She deserves a better show than this. It’s like taking a world-class baseball player and throwing him into a waterpolo match. 1/5

Cat Planet Cuties (Asobi ni iku yo!) 12 (FINAL) + OVA

Well, this show sucks too. I found it to be a really boring Infinite Stratos. While IS failed in plot and succeeded as a harem, Cat Planet Cuties fails at both. This is really a case of a show giving me things I didn’t ask for. The first two episodes were pretty good. They were packed with some good action and character introductions. My favorite character was Kio’s uncle. After those episodes, the quality takes a nose dive. Kio’s uncle inexplicably disappears, other human characters are introduced and then the show tries its hand at a lame villain. There was too much emphasis on the humans and too little on the cat planet cuties (the Catians). The harem antics aren’t very crazy either. They were more calculated and almost dramatic than within the realm of the harem genre. Just like Infinite Stratos, it possesses an OVA that’s arguably better than the main series because it forgoes its attempts at plot and just embraces what it is. 1/5
