Super Robot Wars Original Generation The Animation
Yet another show I'd been curious about over the years. I heard it wasn't too good and sadly that seemed pretty accurate. The story is a non-canonical sequel to the second game. The story is about a researcher who becomes disillusioned after seeing loved ones die in a war. He believed his control system was superior and would have saved countless lives had it been used so decides to wage war on humanity himself to unite it. It's a silly premise but one that's been addressed in the actual OG games.
Given the director was responsible for Neo Getter Robo vs Shin Getter Robo and Kotetshushin Jeeg, I expected more than what I got from this. While it was likely budget and series length related, the action felt really restrained, the enemy grunts were CG and looked awful compared to the hand drawn units, and the show itself seemed to alternate between robots knocking the shit out of one another and talking heads without a satisfying balance. In fact, it was mostly named units from the show vs endless waves of the OAV's grunt unit which was boring. There's some violence in the show but there's a particular scene that's a little gruesome as nothing else in the three episodes was like it so it felt gratuitous and out of line with the rest of the show's tone.
It was nice fan pandering as far as the usual stuff like Masaki showing up lost and Ratsel arriving to save the day with the worst version of Trombe I've heard. Kyosuke and Excellen were given the lead roles which was great as always but the biggest issue with this is it was made just for fans of the series. No one is given introduction, events from the games are given flashbacks and make no sense without previous experience with the material, and familiar tropes from the games are lost upon the new viewer. For the fan, this was at best average. As a standalone work, it's rather poor and amazingly inconsistent.
I can't believe this was the actual flying pose.
It's hard to screw up portraying the Alteisen or Cybuster (although the Divine Wars TV series sure tried.)

Don't worry, it doesn't really come up beyond that - although it explains why Sachiko doesn't like him. A relationship with him is like her father and grandfather's relationship with their spouses... except with an extra, spicier twist.
The author wrote a spinoff series about the boys school that Suguru and his kohai go to (Hanadera?) called "Buddha Watches Too" (Maria can't be the only one looking!) and maybe it's a lot more overt in that series... I don't know anything about it and I can't imagine they'll make that into an anime if no one is willing to animate the final series of MariMite books.

She's the girl on the left in the pictures SDBurton posted. She's a major character for about a season before she graduates. At which point, she pops in once in a while.
As you can see, her relationship with Yumi, the main character, is a special one. lol
Incidentally, she's also my favourite character and if I ever go back to having an animu avatar, I'd probably use one of her.
