Confused is a reasonable feeling. So much stuff happens so quickly without proper explanation that I had completely overlooked that the entirety of season 1 was literally over the course of 2 days in-universe. Thankfully, I thought season 2 was actually a bit more understandable than the first, if only because it doesn't have to spend time trying to setup the world/setting and moves immediately onto the plot involving England and Spain.

What did you end up thinking about Tori's power?

Wait, there is a season 2? It's not on Crunchyroll, dammit. Season 1 ended wother Horizon using the second emotion or "sin" she obtained and made up her mind on what she wanted to do. The first seas on made no sense at all most of the time, but it w as pretty fun, at least Tori was unwavering in his love choice, which w as great to see in an anime, lol. Also, Tori, power? Was that buck naked power or something? He has nothing..

Wow, never thought i'd see Blue Moon (with a mgronalds-tier name name obviously) in anime. The real label has pine trees on it opposed to mountains, which is what's in the anime. I had to go check my fridge downstairs to be sure lol

Any good?

The news of a DBZ sequel would have sent me into a frenzy, 8 years ago. It actually makes me kind of sad that this is happening, and I still find it hard to muster up any emotion whatsoever. Maybe its a sign that I'm getting old, even-though I'm far from it! Never even ended up watching Battle of Gods, and don't care to. Fuck this shit ;(

I enjoy it. It's a decent wheat-ale. The orange twist on it is nice.

My taste preferences usually skew towards the darker stuff most of the time, though I enjoy it all really.

It's a sign that you're aware of what they did with Sailor Moon Crystal.

I love how Code Geass is all over the place.
Did they try to make
the worlds largest pizza
already? that's the best scene.

That goes hand-in-hand with the creative staff being rather chill and self-aware, which to my surprise is something that not everyone actually realizes while watching the series.

Shit I didn't think about that. I used to watch a bit of the old Sailor Moon as a kid, obviously had a crush on them all (Mercury is the best, right? Along with the unappreciated (?) Jupiter), but never really delved too deeply into the series other than that, couldn't name a single episode or what happens in any episode, so the new Crystal series isn't something that I'm inherently aware of, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't know of the sour response it garnered, although I assume/hope it had some redeeming qualities for long time fans.

Another random morning thought. Besides the opening and closing themes, is there a series that does a great job of using music to help set the mood often when going through the story? Probably because of production costs, but it doesn't seem to happen very often.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but Aku no Hana (Flowers of Evil) is an example of a show that has an amazing use of audio and music, that is utilized in an effective manner that works incredibly well to set the tone with the ending theme for each episode itself also being truly breathtaking in its simplicity and yet effectiveness, which in the end had me grinning with each conclusion to each episode. An amazing show, so close to being in my top 5, if it wasn't for the fact that we'll never get any more, which makes me incredibly sad.

Personally, I enjoyed Satoru Kousaki's soundtracks for both Haruhi and Bakemonogatari (only Bake, I felt his work in Nise and after was much weaker) and felt they complimented the series well. Kouhei Tanaka's work in Hyouka was very good, though there were some scenes where a track didn't fit as well as one could've (the first one that comes to mind was the scene in 11.5 where Eru/Mayaka/Satoshi were playing in the pool; it was too melancholical for an energetic scene).

Those series are some of my favorite OSTs that help the story along, but I also really enjoyed Tomoko Kataoka's work in the Tamako Love Story film as well. The TV series was solid, but the movie's OST was really incredible and added a lot of depth to the film.

Edit: Ah, I also forgot Yuuji Nomi's soundtrack to Nichijou. He composed so many different tracks that fit scenes very well. One skit was purely all OST and the silence made that scene as hilarious as it was.

See all of Ikuhara's works.

His involvement with sound direction elevates his material.

I think TTGL and Katanagatari are also good examples of people putting great Taku Iwasaki music to really great use.

Haruhi's OST really sticks with me for some reason. I've never really sat down and thought about it but the main theme with the trumpets and Comical Hustle are still in my mind

Shin Sekai Yori didnt have a lot of music but it made great use of the songs it had to create incredible atmosphere.

From Katanagatari I remember only Gettouka - but it hits you really hard.

The music in the final episode was outstanding.

Most of the music from the 2 OST releases were used in the show too. If you're interested it's definitely worth a rewatch to see just how much is in there. The breadth of his incidental music is really great and is always fantastic scene accompaniment. He weaves in a lot traditional Japanese folk music and melodies in the compositions of this OST, though they're sometimes obscured to the point that it's harder for a listener to pick up on them unless they're familiar with what he's actually doing.

The whole scene where this song (this particular variation) is used left an impression on me I don't think i'll ever forget. It was a culmination of a lot of things, and the combination of everything that takes place during it were just sheer perfection for me.

He's also just god-tier when it comes to nailing music for action scenes and battles. It's always spot on.

His work in Soul Eater and Witch Hunter Robin were good too.

Well, setting the mood is one of the main reasons why an OST exists so you can just look at series with a good soundtrack and you'll find your answer.

Evangelion (or other Gainax shows) for example.

I already rewatched it (3rd time) earlier this year. Yeah, I'll agree with you on Bahasu Palsu. It's just that Gettouka leaves me with goosebumps with 100% rate. It's just that I'm more of a fan of Kotonoha and first opening in that sense. But they do not apply for named requirments)

Oh, and I forgot to name Nana for good soundtrack. While as a series about music I enjoy Beck more, it still has a really good songs in it.

I've been watching the original Lupin III series, just got to episode 10. I didn't like how the 1st episode really made no effort to introduce the cast. It's based on a revenge plot in a racing setting. Overall, it just did a very bad job introducing the series' characters or premise. Right afterwards there are a couple of weird episodes too, like Lupin facing a supposed psychic.

However, the show improves once it actually settles on a more standard format, with Lupin challenging the police or other thieves. Goemon also gets a two episode introduction unlike any of the other cast members.

Got a good laugh out of this. Used to be my go-to beer a few years ago. Pretty cool to see it in an anime.

The more I watch Yama no Susume actually the more I think it's probably one of my favourite anime I've watched. *checks list* I think holistically it's just really really good. That it looks astoundingly gorgeous and is a relatively short time investment to boot is just icing on the cake

So I guess this is 4 episodes of hot as hell Variable Fighter porn, TRAGIC PAST, good music, ugly character designs and Hatsune Miku. Think I'll enjoy this.

Tha part that sticks out in my mind is in ep.12 of Bakemonogatari at about the 18 min-22:00 min mark. If you haven't watced that scene, go watch it; no real spoilers there, but it's simply beautiful. I just had to watch it again,(including the conversation with her dad atjust before that scene. It's by far my favorite scene in all of anime, well, to fully understand the impact of it you would have to watch the entire series, up to that point, but that one scene is amazing and will always be a benchmark to me on how to direct and write a scenerio. Great writing and great way to play it all out; it almost drew tears from me again. The music is great right there; perfect tone perfect pace and really sets the mood. It also leads perfectly into the awesome closing song. This is a must watch is you have a soul, lol, or if you can appreciate a romantic moment. I think I'll watch it one more jsut, ya know, just so I can be an expert.

I just realized My Little monster does it really well at times also.

My man.

ya know, when I read what I type I realize how rushed and scrambled my typing is when I'm multi-tasking. I really need to do a spelling and grammer check when I post, lol.

My Little Monster: ep.9-END:
So I finally cleared another from my queue. The Shiz and Haru relationship is confusing, but for as eccentric as Haru was, the problems they faced in this one were mostly Shiz’s fault. She needs to learn to live life and stop with the tunnel vision. People who cannot branch off from their main path tend to get stuck in a rut in life. Deviation from the status quo is important to both kids and adults. It’s unfortunate that she could not realize this and come to grips with it, even with Yamaguchi pointing this out to her. It looks like she may start to listen, but…. Overall, this was a good watch, but it’s also another story with a rushed, fake, incomplete ending and they were not shamed to even point it out as the final episode ended and Shiz stated that there are open issues that need to be addressed (including Nagoya, lol). It makes you wonder if they meant to make a S2, but just didn’t get around to it or the series wasn’t popular enough to make. Whatever the case may be, I guess you can take the ending for what it was and be happy with it. It is a sweet ending after all, just may not be what you would expect after seeing their interactions in the first couple episodes.

I'm watching Kai now. Its... okay. Only okay. Pacing is really slow, action isn't great, story is... alright, but really nothing special so far. I'm mainly watching it for the nostalgia, since I watched the show as a kid.

Hopefully I finish in time for the new show, but I'm watching Kai at a pretty slow pace.

Thanks for this recommendation - just watched the first episode and it's very fun so far! The animation and music are wonderful, and am I right in thinking that Doremi has the same voice actor as Ahiru from Princess Tutu? Quite a lot of the animation and art style seems a little reminiscent of Tutu as well, which can only be a good thing.

I don't know, I only watched Tutu dubbed. Possibly.

If you manage to be willing to go full hog on the entirety of Doremi, I (or someone else) will be willing to set up a viewing guide for an optimal experience, since the movies and OVAs are canon.

Memories is the first one. Melodies the second.

Nice, I might check that one out. I'm in such a weird mood again today...

I had to re-watch Bake Ep. 12 again just for that scene Cornbread mentioned.

That whole scene, combined with the piano version of Staple Stable, really is fantastic and probably my favorite scene in the entire series.

I've watched it about 5 times already today. going from the two piano solo right into the closing theme is amazing right there.

Jinki: Extend 08-13

The second half of the show felt like it focused more on Akao than Aoba, though the two halves did end up playing into each other in a satisfactory way. The requirements for being a mecha series aren't very strict - just have some combat in giant robots in there - but this shows that among real robot series, even similar shows in the same genre can be wildly different. There was some stuff dealing with clones, Aoba coming to terms with her mother... it was never super engaging, but it wasn't boring either. The scale was just right for the story they were telling.

It looks like there's also an eroge version of the story, so I'll at the very least put it in my backlog.

The next two shows on my backlog are a good investment. Spice & Wolf and Maoyuu, I'll give both of them a shot.

So it isn't as simple as watching them chronologically? A guide'd probably be quite useful then :)

Here's a rough guide to watching Doremi.

Doremi S1 -> Doremi Sharp (Episodes 1-39) -> Sharp Movie -> Sharp (Episodes 40-49) -> Motto -> Motto Movie -> Naisho -> Dokkan

You can watch Motto's Movie at around Episode 40 as well like Sharp's Movie but it isn't nearly as clear cut, you have to watch it though as it affects events later on in the series (especially Dokkan). For best results you should watch Sharp Movie and Sharp Episode 40 in one go as they are two parts of the same story.

Not entirely! Not entirely. There are a handful of decent shows I can think of where music was not used especially well. However, as a rule of thumb, most veteran directors understand the importance of music (and audio effects) in general. Music often does more to set the mood and tone and emotion of a scene than the visuals and it's an extremely powerful tool (for an illustration of this just examine Star Wars or Jaws without the iconic music). Now not every great director is as good as, say, Ikuhara, but most of them are very well versed in the field.

Also, I believe you have seen Bakemonogatari and Shin Seki Yori, correct? Both of those works are scored extremely well.

S2 with Tenzo and England. It should be on CR. And Tori had that
"sharing everything he owns" power that let him supply near-infinite energy to his allies because, as viceroy, he "owns" a quarter of their ship
. Although, technically, his regular power is the God Mosaic that...well, puts a mosaic on him whenever he feels like going around naked.

No doubt, it just seems to be lacking in some of the shows I've been watching lately. If it is there, it doesn't always fit the mood right. We referenced teh best instince of it above in the starry sky scene ep.12 of Bakemonogatari, where it is used perfectly to set the tone and feel of the moment. great work. I forgot about it's use in Shin Seki (only the closign music stood out until they changed it for some stupid reason halfway through)

My bad, I meant S3. They did 1-2 and cut it off right after the battle with the Spanish Armada. Wasn't the power he got from a contract with the Shinto temple though? In other words, he gets to share that power with everyone, but if he ever get sad, he will break the contract and die immediately?
